5150 Lego Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 So i bought 7998 a few weeks ago. Very impressed with the set over all, but felt there were a few things just not right. I myself, am a huge fan of tractor trailers. Since lego hasn't really introduced one since the Scudeia Ferrari Trasport truck, i felt there was the new heavy hauler was a perfect canidete for this.. You can haul one, two or more trailers for thoses that want to build an Austrilian road train. Both trailers are identical, and the second trailer uses a dolly to attach to the first trailer. This is typical of the setup you'd see on the American roads. Coments are welcome, as well as sugjestions. You can view the restof the images on my Maj gallery. (boy, that sure sounds wierd :-D ) http://www.maj.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=149695 Quote
Siegfried Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 That looks great! I am strongly considering buying this set and doing the exact same thing. Did you need many more pieces? Since lego hasn't really introduced one since the Scudeia Ferrari Trasport truck, i felt there was the new heavy hauler was a perfect canidete for this.. What about 7900? Quote

Thanks! I didn't need to many more peices than what the set original set came with, but i used as many original parts as i could. 7900 isa great set, but i really don't consider the bridge a trailer, but it has huge potential. I can use mine to tow the 7998 trailers. I also built a lowbed trailer for it as well. Quote
Hinckley Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 Great mods 5150! Thanks for sharing. You know what's comical to me about this set? It looks like the model builders took two of their sorting bins and said, what if we put wheels on these? Is the spare tire placement part of the set or did you place that there? Yes, double trailers are common over here in the states. I am in the midwest US and some states have different requirements as to how many wheels a rig should have, so when they enter certain states they have to lower extra wheel sets. Interesting, huh? Thanks again! :-) Quote

Thanks Hinckley the the coments! I added the spare myself. I had two extra wheels and tires, so i wanted to utilze at least one of them. Helps complete the look of the truck don't ya think? Interesting, huh? Thanks again! :-) Yup. In califorina, your lony alowed 2 trailers Or a maz of around 65 feet. (I think) I other states your alowed 3 trailers and over 100 feet in lenth.I orinally wanted to make a Supper bee trailer. (5th wheel hitch is built into the first trailer eliminating the dolly. This is prefered way to tow 2 trailers in Canada. But it wouldn't work with dumpers since it would esential dump the load onto the rear axle) Here is an example .. The number of wheels/axles all depends on the weight requiremnet for that patiualr state. Some states require 3 axles for a certain weight, while others may only require 1, 2 or more. Here are some more examples of custom trailers made to meet certain stese wieght-per-axle requirments... http://www.advanceengineeredproducts.com/p...tictrailers.php They lift the sets that are not needed to reduce where wear on the tires and bearings. I'm about to get going on the process of getting my Class-A license for my job. It will be interesting to see all the laws and restrictions per state Edited July 19, 2007 by 5150 Lego Quote
Siegfried Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 7900 isa great set, but i really don't consider the bridge a trailer, but it has huge potential. I can use mine to tow the 7998 trailers. I also built a lowbed trailer for it as well. Sorry, I misinterpretted you. I thought you were refering to the truck more, not the trailer. I agree that the bridge makes a horrid trailer; I broke mine very fast and made a flatbed for it. (Which I have since broken.) I also added a sleeper cab to it. You can see it in this photo to the right. Quote
Asuka Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 Very fine improvements indeed, it looks very accurate and, well, powerful! *y* Quote

Sorry for the blurry pics, but my camera doesn't seem to like closeups of small objects. the rest of the gallery can be seen here when public http://www.maj.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=149873 Quote
Landlubber Posted July 20, 2007 Posted July 20, 2007 (edited) If you take off the bridge pieces of 7900 and turn the supports up the other way, it actually forms a flatbed trailer which will support the digger without adding any extra pieces to 7900. You then have a bridge to integrate into your town. Edited July 20, 2007 by Landlubber Quote
Andrew K Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 could you take some shots of how the trailers are constructed, i cant for the life of me work out how you've done it Quote
5150 Lego Posted September 12, 2007 Author Posted September 12, 2007 I'll take some later tonight with the wheels off,so you can see the frame better. Buti'llwarn you ahead oftime, that my carera doesn't take very good closeups. Quote
zeki Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 This is very nice moc! And it seems everyone made a trailer MOD (flatbed) for 7900, and mostly use it to transport 7284. I did the same. Quote
Lasse D Posted September 15, 2007 Posted September 15, 2007 Wow. I'm seeing more and more mods of this set, and I like everything I have seen until now! At first I thought it wasn't a good set given the width and big green parts, but you guys (and the other ones I have seen on Brickshelf) sure make the best out of it! >5150 Lego Doesn't your camera have a macro function? It is often marked with a flower. Quote
the overseas kiwi Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Nice truck. I have two of these kits sitting around, time to play with this!! Quote
Siegfried Posted November 19, 2007 Posted November 19, 2007 I hope you don't mind 5150 Lego but I decided it was more sense adding this to your topic than creating a new one.... Eitherway, I at last got around to modding mine! It was harder than I thought as I wanted it to only take up one stud of extra height. It attaches further back than I wanted due to this; the "hydraulics" are below the tray and would rub on the wheels if it was mounted closer. I also tried shortening the truck but I didn't like how it looked. I am planning on doing the other trailer as well but I am out of wheels so it will have to wait! :-$ It's now time to put this thing to work! Quote

I did try to do the same MOC that Lego 5150 did also but.. like Sinner said, its harder than expected! Here is mine But Lego 5150 made a trailer stand and i just couldnt figure out how to do it. Everything was in the way of something one way or another. So i just gave up. I also took apart my Technic Rough Terrain Crane 8270 set so that I can use the wheels for my MOC. (its the same wheels!). Quote

Here is mine Thanks for posting! *sweet* It is interesting how three people can have a similar goal and have very different results. Whats so different? The original was a dump truck with a trailer. Lt. Col. Thok Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 Very nice, Sinner! Just a question, how big is your town? Quote
Siegfried Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 Very nice, Sinner! Just a question, how big is your town? Thanks! *sweet* But to answer your question, not big enough! :-D It's quite small actually, but it's big enough to be a handy backdrop for city MOCs. Quote
AzMean Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 Thanks for posting! satisfied.gif It is interesting how three people can have a similar goal and have very different results. yeah... my MOC was inspired by Lego 5150's MOC and it made total sense why he did it, coz i felt that the length of the truck was too long and hard to turn. X-O nice, cute town Sinner! Very crowded indeed! btw, wats a portable toilet doing on top of the building? :-D Quote
KarlMarX Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 Ik like your mods very much! *y* But I'm pretty new with LEGO modding/moccing and I don't see how to do it. Can someone maybe post a how-to or something please? :-$ Quote

Can someone maybe post a how-to or something please? :-$ Im quite new to MOCing too Karl.. but its up to individual's creativity and how many extra lego bricks/parts you have to make your own MOC. For me, I prefer to leave a set the way it is unless I don't like the design and feels that something better can be added or removed, then I will do it. Just experiment here and there and you will get the hang of it. You can start with smaller sets first, if you want to. :-$ Good luck! Quote

But I do tend to agree with AzMean; just give it a try. *sweet* Quote
