Murdoch17 Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 (edited) This picture is how it looks on my layout right now. All of the following items sit on two 6 x 3 foot folding tables placed in a upside down "L" format. I hope it's okay I included town buildings in this post! Layout Width: 6 feet Layout Height: 9 feet STRUCTURES & TRACK X51 Rail RC Straight X35 Rail RC Curved X2 Train track switch left X2 Train track switch right X1 Victorian Station (Barretts) X1 Victorian Signal tower X1 double track train shed (XL) X1 Water Tower X1 Coaling tower LOCOS & ROLLING STOCK X1 Mikado (2-8-2) steam locomotive X1 Mogul (2-6-0) steam locomotive X1 American (4-4-0) steam locomotive X2 Generic Boxcar X1 Bobber Caboose X1 Flat car with automobile load x1 Gondola with rock load X1 drop side gondola X1 combination baggage / coach (dark green) X2 Passenger car (dark green) X1 Observation (dark green) X1 combination baggage / coach (dark gray) X3 Passenger car (dark gray) X1 Observation (dark gray) X3 Passenger car (reddish brown) TOWN BUILDINGS X1 Saloon X1 Military Surplus store x1 Tudor-style House X1 Bank X1 Tavern X1 LEGO Train Cub building X1 Sinister Mansion X1 Johnny Thunder's office (XL) World City Train Shed I made the shed longer than the original set number 10027 by 4 tracks, and widened both stalls by 1 stud on each side. (This makes it so 8 wide trains can fit) I added a middle section, and threw out the old hinge-open plan. (left side, middle, and right side)The shed is capable of holding the modified 2-10-4 Texas type steam engine, side-by-side with my ALCO FA & FB diesel units. The shed used to be modular in 3 sections (two end segments and one middle), but it was very weak in the center. I then decided to redo the model into one large section, but the problem then became that the storage became nearly impossibly difficult... I have a a big wooden case for it, but it makes if hard to go up / down stairs. Victorian signal tower This Victorian-era tower features a signal bridge, a spiral staircase to connect the two floors and a signal / switch computer from more modern times. It was inspired by my Victorian Railroad depot, and will eventually be built for my layout after the station get finished. Victorian railroad depot (Barretts Station) The station features four removable sections: the tower roof and second floor, plus the left and right platform extensions. The building also has an interior with ticket desk, three seats and a fireplace on the lower floor. The upper room features a desk with chair. Sinister Mansion This classic 90's LEGO-styled model was originally built in 2007 by a Brickshelf user named "Widdi". That user uploaded the instructions which I stumbled upon and built / modified in Lego Digital Designer. I added another story for the tower, put furniture inside and worked a garage into the structure. More recently, I have redone the tower and removed some of the windows. Ironwood Lego User's group (IronLUG) This model houses Iron LUG, the local LEGO Users Group for Ironwood - area residents. It is situated in an old pharmacy that has been renovated into a display area. Stone Bank I took set the Bank from the 2011 Harry Potter LEGO set Diagon Alley (number 10217) and gave it a make over into a more City-like set. First I straightened the columns out, and added a more protected Bank teller area. The vault was shortened width-wise by 1 stud, making it 3 studs thick, (plus the door, of course) to allow it to sit closed next to the teller area. English tavern This English style tavern was built from set 10193, Medieval Market Village, and expanded by my brother to have an inside staircase and a better chimney. Bob's Adventure Supplies This building was originally part of set 10217, Diagon Alley, specifically Ollivander's wand Shop. I added a rear to the building and redid the interior to have more of a Military Surplus store look. The store is currently owned by Bob from LEGO Universe, and was finished in late 2014. Backwash Saloon This model was inspired by set 79109, Colby City Showdown from the 2013 Lone Ranger theme. I turned the 1 story bank into a 2 story saloon, complete with two lift-away sections to access the inside. Tudor house This building was originally the Blacksmith's shop from set 10193, Medieval Market Village released back in 2009. I got it in 2011, near the end of it's production run. It has been turned into my mini-figures house, complete with furnished interior. Johnny Thunder's office Since the last time I uploaded Johnny Thunder's office, I did a Bricklink inventory of the parts list and found that the first model is way cheaper than the following versions I made. It may be not as fancy, but it get the job done and looks okay too. Mikado steam engine The locomotive is a 2-8-2 (two leading, six driving, and two trailing wheels) steam locomotive. Engine number 5916 usually pulls the Meramec River Runner. Combination baggage and passenger car for the Meramec River Runner. Three identical passenger coaches The observation coach lacks the letters BRS (standing for Brick Railway Systems) but it is owned by that line. Mogul steam locomotive The locomotive is a 2-6-0 (two leading, six driving, and zero trailing wheels) steam locomotive. Engine number 4613 usually pulls the Emerald Express. Combination baggage and passenger car for the Emerald Express. Two passenger coaches The observation car of the Emerald Express. The letters BRS stand for Brick Railway Systems, the owner of the train. American steam locomotive This engine is a 4-4-0 (four leading, four driving, zero trailing) steam locomotive. It is numbered 12 and pulls a excursion passenger train. This is the train that is pulled by loco number 12. As a side note, the chains on the car ends have a glitch and refused to bend. They are supposed to sit on the 1x1 clip plates, and not the handrail itself. This post will be updated as time goes on with more real world pictures of trains and buildings. Any thoughts? EDIT: here is my layout as of today, the 21st of May 2015. In this picture you can see my dark green train with 2-6-0 steamer (second track to the back) my freight train with a BR Class 09 in lead (furthest track to the rear) The other vehicles are Bob's 1978 auto, a 1950's double-deck bus, a LEGO Movie police car and a VW bus. (you can't see the bus from here, nor can you see my Ford Anglia, but trust me: they are there!) The Adventurers seaplane is on the extreme left, next to my 7997 style train station. My town is on the right, with the saloon, Dr Who TARDIS and bank on the extreme right, while the Military surplus shop, tavern and Iron LUG are on the mid-right. The black and red models in the center are my current black and red train shed, a water tower, and the tallest object on my layout: the coaling tower. Sadly, the 2-8-2 is not here yet, with only one more Bricklink order that was supposed to arrive today. (It did not show up.) We did receive someone else's package by mistake instead! EDITED 5/27/15: Added the 4-4-0 and a new engine shed. I still need to take pictures of the 2-8-2. Edited June 29, 2015 by Murdoch17 Quote
WholeWheatLego Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Wow! That's quite a collection you have there! Do you have any (IRL) pictures of the whole layout? Quote

And no, not yet... my camera on my phone could probably do it, though maybe in a couple days I could, once my 2-8-2 is finished/ Oh, and BTW: I updated the picture of the train shed to keep it up-to-date. AirborneAFOL Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Is the table a "permanent" layout (i.e., can you keep it setup there long term)? If so, you've got a lot of great structures and rail layout to be the basis - and lots of options for "landscaping". My layout is similarly on 3 folding tables - if yours is a permanent spot, a tunnel might be a viable addition - basically a wooden "box" that you can cover in brick. I know my 2-yr old kid gets a thrill out of seeing a train (with LED headlights) steaming through it :) Quote
Feuer Zug Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 I really like your old switch tower. It has a wonderful look, and performs a vital function in history. The use of Diagon Alley is nice too. Quote

I am looking into this brick-built tunnel to use in the future: I really like your old switch tower. It has a wonderful look, and performs a vital function in history. The use of Diagon Alley is nice too. Thank you! That switch tower is on the to-do list, and should be built around the time of the Victorian station. I don't know when exactly, but it will happen. Also, Diagon alley is one of my favorite sets to own, and sits very nicely with Medieval Market Village. Edited May 22, 2015 by Murdoch17 Quote
zephyr1934 Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 For all of the trains that you have this layout seems way too small (grin). I guess you just need a nice set of displays shelves on the wall behind it (grin some more) Quote

I guess you just need a nice set of displays shelves on the wall behind it (grin some more) That's actually an excellent idea to install shelves. But it will have to wait until I get my own place. Right now, the rest of them are sitting in paper boxes in my closet...except for the select few that don't fit in boxes... (I'm looking at you streetcars!) Quote
Murdoch17 Posted May 27, 2015 Author Posted May 27, 2015 I have replaced the tan shed with this bigger red one that I already have built. and I also added this 4-4-0 steam locomotive to the roster: The first post has been updated, and comments are always welcome! Quote
Wabbajack Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 Wow, this was my dream layout, but when I started with trains again, the Emerald night was sold out and I bought the Maersk. So now I have a diesel layout. Quote
Murdoch17 Posted June 12, 2015 Author Posted June 12, 2015 (edited) Wow, this was my dream layout, but when I started with trains again, the Emerald night was sold out and I bought the Maersk. So now I have a diesel layout. Sorry for the late reply. Your layout sounds awesome: Have you posted it on Eurobricks yet? Also, I have a couple updates to tell you all about: Before last Tuesday (9th of June), the tender was kinda large for my 2-6-0, but I didn't notice it until I got an an engine that it really fit with it in the larger form: my 2-8-2 "Mikado". So, I went to work on redesigning the dark green tender to be smaller and came up with the design you see here. it's not perfect by any means, but it's good enough for me. The tender on the left is the original-style tender used on my 2-8-2, while the one on the right is my 2-6-0's new smaller tender. LDD file for the dark green engine + new tender: http://www.mocpages....1433889432m.lxf Speaking of my 2-8-2: parts are on their way through the postal system to complete this train: This passenger train is a four-studs-per-car shorter version of the one I uploaded earlier in blue. It features the 2-8-2 Mikado steam engine pulling the train, one combination baggage / passenger car, three coaches, and one observation car. These passenger cars are on order as I write this, as I already have the locomotive. The train by itself is inspired by the Wabash Frisco & Pacific passenger cars, except these are dark gray and not blue. The name of this train is the "Gray Streak" which is a play off the Silver Streak of movie fame (the 1934 film: not the 1976 one) but instead of being a diesel-electric stream liner, this one is steam-powered conventional passenger train. LDD file for the 2-8-2 and Gray Streak: http://www.mocpages....1433630369m.lxf The first post is updated as well. Edited June 12, 2015 by Murdoch17 Quote

Murdoch17 Posted June 14, 2015 Author Posted June 14, 2015 i think the big tender is actually better! The new one looks to long in my eyes. And There are steam locomotives with large tenders like those. Thanks for commenting! I do agree it looks a little long, but in real life it fits much better than shown here. To me, it just looked too tall as it was, so I shortened it to better fit with my locomotive. That's the good thing about Lego, though, if you don't like it: change it to suit your tastes! Quote
WholeWheatLego Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Looks good! I agree, the old tender was a little big, but they both would've been fine. Now you just gotta update your sig! Quote

Thank you, and I didn't notice that my signature was out of date. Thanks for the heads-up! EDIT: Done with the updated picture featuring the 2-6-0 "Mogul"'s smaller tender for my revamped signature. I also color matched the 2-8-2 to it's real life counterpart while I was at it. I also added the 4-4-0 American and 2-10-4 Texas to the signature. Hope you like it! Murdoch17 Posted June 26, 2015 Author Posted June 26, 2015 Okay, the red XL shed doesn't fit anymore (no more room on the table!), so Iv'e devised an updated version of an older model to fit my two steamers. This shed was first built around 2005 by my father as a present to me. It was originally a single stall, three tracks long, with no side workshop... That is, until I was about to order parts to increase it's length to four tracks. I suddenly decided that while I was at it, it should probably have a removable roof. It kinda snowballed from there into this design seen here. I added a workshop (with it's own removable roof) to the left side of the model. I then took the main section's roof off and made it detachable. Later on, I added another track to fit my 2-8-2, but the engine couldn't squeeze inside at first. I extended the facility 8 studs forward to make it fit, but their is a problem: a base-plate is going to be CUT to make a 32 x 6 stud slit for the overhanging shed entrance. (Don't worry: the base-plate has been butchered already when my father extended his shed to two tracks.) The inside will be taken up by my dark green 2-6-0 "Mogul"-type steam locomotive number 4613, and dark bluish gray 2-8-2 "Mikado" type steam engine number 5916. NOTE: The locomotives are NOT included in the LDD file. The workshop is supposed to feature tools from set 10027: (2003's Train Shed) a metal lathe, drill press and tool drawers, plus a coffee machine. (The reason they are missing is they just haven't been constructed yet.) Here is the rear of the shed. The building sits on a XL 48 x 48 stud base-plate, a 1/2 Large 32 x 16 plate and the custom 32 x 6 cut-out I talked about earlier. The model features two removable sections (that's the workshop roof and engine shed roof) for access to the interior of the building. I have already put the base-plates down, and I just need to eventually purchase $243 (US) worth of bricks. LDD file - no locomotives: http://www.mocpages.com/user_images/80135/1435261536m.lxf What do you think? I was going for a industrial / down-town look when me and my dad made it way back when... does it look that way to you? Quote
Murdoch17 Posted June 29, 2015 Author Posted June 29, 2015 (edited) I have now added the real life pictures of the Victorian train station, the Mogul with the Emerald Express, the Mikado with the Meramec River Runner, and the XL engine shed. Here we see the front of the shed with the Mikado and Mogul peeking out of the front doors. Their were doors for the shed, but I removed them as they didn't look right and kept falling off. (Sorry for the blurry photo: I used my phone to take these pictures and my hands shake. Usually i have something to rest them on, but not this time.) Edited June 29, 2015 by Murdoch17 Quote
