Observe the 'Dynamic Galaxy Map' before you, and tell me how last week we: a) ended up in sector E11 and not in D10 with the rest of Admiral SpacerSteve's fleet and b) didn't notice until you clowns found some dangerous little space critter and no science vessel to take it to!” Moose: "Sir, We were not aware of the error sir. We were just briefed to go out into the asteroid belt and survey for awesomnium Sir. We assumed E11 was where we were supposed to be; you don't expect to be dropped in the wrong system every day Sir!" Alvin: “Sir, Moose is correct Sir. Our briefing did not specify which sector we were supposed to be in, just that we were to survey the current sector Sir.” Captain Keynes: “And you didn't think to ask!? Idiots! And as for you Stevens” Ensign Stevens: “Sir, The D10 and E11 asteroid belts do look very similar on the map Sir. It is less than 1 stud per sector resolution Sir." Meanwhile aboard the MSV Horizon 'Sal' Class Science vessel. Dr Fields: "Research Log Entry Alpha two dash zero one. The creature discovered by the MSS Titan appears to utilise awesomnium in some part of it's digestive process. Its excrement is pink in colour and according to the MSS Titan crew indicated high levels of awesomnium, though the readings were not consistent with our baseline awesomnium signature records. Visual microscopy suggests the substance is homogenous and appears to have a metallic crystal structure." Dr Fields: "I am placing a sample in the Awesome Nano Analysis Laser." Dr Fields: "Sample has been accepted." Dr Fields: "Energising. Looks like the Titan crew were right! The ANA-Laser has isolated the elemental signature and it looks to be a stable second isotope of awesomnium. I best let Big Sal know right away!" Aboard the Rescue Ship MSR Findy Big Sal: "What is it? This better be important! I've just spent days stuck inside an asteroid with two morons!" Dr Fields: "Sir, This is Dr Fields aboard the Horizon. The MSS Titan discovered an unusual creature in sector E11 and from it I have extracted and isolated a new isotope of awesomnium!" Big Sal: "...You appear to have a standard issue data-pad in your hair." Dr Fields: "Of course Sir. Where else would I keep it?" Big Sal: "Pockets Dr Fields. Pockets! Don't tell me Accountant Long has now cut pockets from the science budget!" Dr Fields: "Not that I am aware of Sir. anyway that's not important, did you not hear what I said?" Big Sal: "Not entirely, that data pad is sort of distracting." Dr Fields: "Better, Sir?" Big Sal: "Much, now continue...." Dr Fields: "Sir, we have isolated a second stable isotope of awesomnium!" Big Sal: "Really! Wow! And how does it differ from the baseline element?" Dr Fields: "Er...I am still running tests but....so far as I can conclude....instead of being purple it is pink sir." Big Sal: "Pink you say!? Hmm... what further tests have you planned? Injecting it into plants? Adding it to foodstuffs? Hmmm...actually on second thoughts, send me all your data and samples at once!" Dr Fields: "Yes Sir." Back Aboard the MSS Titan.... Captain Keynes: “For your absolute idiocy you will all be cut to basic apprentice pay and placed on latrine maintenance for..." Ensign Stevens: “Incoming transmission Sir!" Captain Keynes: “And you Stevens for interrupting me mid rant will get..." Ensign Stevens: “Its CEO Big Sal, Sir!" Captain Keynes: “Dammit, I'll deal with you later! On Screen!" Big Sal: "Capain Keynes! I want you to promote the intrepid explorers who found the awesomnium creature in sector E11; they are to get double larvae privileges on all Fridays!" Smaller builds this week as I had somewhat less time with bricks. A bonus shot of the lab: And the Map room in normal lighting conditions. The map is controlled and navigated in detail via the console and arm in used by Ensign Stevens: : I'd been playing with the map room idea ever since the CAT C part of contest 2. I thought the hex pattern on the insectoid dome part reminded me of the dynamic galaxy map. Under the dome are a number of 'planets' to hopefully give a bit more impression of there being a holographic map rather than just a transparent dome: Quote
Dannylonglegs Posted October 4, 2015 Posted October 4, 2015 Very clever use of the galaxy squad insect eye piece to match the hexes of the board! Great job and fun story! ~Insectoid Aristocrat Quote
rodiziorobs Posted October 4, 2015 Posted October 4, 2015 Great parts usage with the hex dome and lighting effect, and the story was a lot of fun to read. Quote
LittleJohn Posted October 4, 2015 Posted October 4, 2015 Fantastic use of that dome, it works perfectly as the map! Great job with the lab and story too Quote
SpacerSteve Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 Great work on the map! I too really like the galaxy squad eye. Your stories are excellent! Quote
Bob De Quatre Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 At least the Dynamic Galaxy Map has a purpose! Quote
A Gallifreyan Cat Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 Two great little mini builds. I love the lighting in the first one. Quote
Kodan Black Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 I like the story but the lab is my favorite part. Love the microscope and that interestingly named laser too. Quote
