Bart Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 (edited) The natives also know how to sail! they go out to fish, maybe even trade with other islands. This couple has caught enough fish for today and are heading home. @moderator, I mistakenly put 'cat B' in the title, can anyone change that to 'cat A' ? please, thank you) Edited January 8, 2016 by Phred Quote
Bregir Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 That is a beautiful outrigger canoe, Bart! There is an exquisite elegance to her lines and rigging that I really like. Those natives should definitely license this as a class 1F and start trading! (Or perhaps the Sea Rats could charter her to sail for them? ) Otherwise, this would be a nice capture to enroll in one's own fleet! Quote
Garmadon Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 Very nice native canoe, Bart, I really like the side arm (can't remember what that's called at the moment, if there even is a name for it ) and the appropriately large sail you've got there! For the water I would suggest either taking out the white pieces or adding a few more of them though, so they don't stick out as much Quote

TitusV Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 I really like the way the sail looks, so elegant! Lovely! Quote
kabel Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 Great canoe, convincing minifig posing - I like it! Quote

Are you swooning over the lines of a prefab lego canoe? :P maybe I could license it, but I'm also working on a ship for Rodsh Derr, that will have a role in Challenge two, I was thinking about licensing that. But this might be an idea too. it's fast (the fastest build yet?) the pirates might be interesting in stealing borrowing a fast boat. (and I'm happy the curving was working the way I intended) Done. Quote
Maxim I Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 Super!! The little crab is an amazing touch! If you ever have the chance to buy transblue 1x1 round plates in a Lego Store, do it, it adds so much to a MOC! Quote

TenorPenny Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 The posing and the little touches like the crab are great. Quote
blackdeathgr Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 I really like the way the sail looks, so elegant! Lovely! That! I am busting my head to remember where the masts come from Quote
Bart Posted January 8, 2016 Author Posted January 8, 2016 That! I am busting my head to remember where the masts come from tipi I really like the way the sail looks, so elegant! Lovely! it took some work and fiddling. It is just yellow paper, a little bit thicker then the standard printing paper. I sewed a ring to the sheet corner, and one side of the sheet line is connected near the feet of steering minifig, and the other end is in the hands of the female figure. That turned out to do the trick. If it wouldn't I would have added a line to the lower forward corner to see if I could manipulate it that way. There is a sort of sheet there ons some of the lateen sails on ships. Quote
Bregir Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 That! I am busting my head to remember where the masts come from I am quite confident they are the beams of tipis from the old western range. :) Quote
blackdeathgr Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 Thank you both! A nice part use of you Bart :) Quote
Sir Stig Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 Ahah, I just ordered 6 of those. I intended to test them in the bow of a larger ship, but apparently they work very well on small vessels as well. Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 Very nice! I like the fact that you've used wigwam poles to make the mast. Quote
Bart Posted January 10, 2016 Author Posted January 10, 2016 Ahah, I just ordered 6 of those. I intended to test them in the bow of a larger ship, but apparently they work very well on small vessels as well. I was planning on using the 1x1 round bricks first as a mast and then the tipi poles both as a spar. but that was too long of a spar. and I didn't have enough rounds for the height I wanted. Then I tried the above set up. They might work in the bow too yes, I'm not a fan of the round nobs on them but they are okay in this build, so maybe they should work on the bow of a larger vessel too Fine build! . Thank you Very nice! I like the fact that you've used wigwam poles to make the mast. Thank you! your approval is really appreciated, you where already building great things when I first showed my 5 piece square boat here. :) ( maybe you can finish the Prins Willem for BoBS Quote
Captain Dee Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 That's a fine canoe and with a sail that big it should really move. The rake of the mast is nice but the red cones are distracting - I assume you didn't have them in brown. The crab is a neat touch. Too bad the size limit force the overhang because it would look better sitting firmly on the base all the way around. Good work. Quote

Yes I didn't have those cones in brown, (or any other colour) and a sloped brick just didn't work. So I took the gamble. I had it build before I thought of the size limit, and I first had it straight on the water, but that looked horrible, I found diagonal worked best. Quote
Vedauwoo Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 I just realized this was your build, Bart....Woo hoo! Go Sea Rats! Perhaps we can recruit a fleet of those guys to assist in the piracy mayhem.... Quote
Gideon Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 (edited) Very nice craft, I like how it really looks like it's sailing! I also think you've done a good job making a slender rigging and a nice curvature of the sail A small piece of photography advice is that it seems like you are mixing light of different temperatures, since parts of the backdrop appear bluish while other parts appear yellowish? It's good to stick to one type of lighting (regardless of if it natural light, incandescent, fluorescent, LED, flash etc) or make sure that their spectrum is fairly similar (like applying a gel to a flash to compensate). Then the white balance will be better, either directly in camera if the camera manages to nail it, or afterwards in the computer (On another note, I've also built an outrigger canoe with a sail as my challenge 1A entry but havn't gotten around to taking pictures of it yet...seems like a very common craft that these natives are using!) Bart Posted January 19, 2016 Author Posted January 19, 2016 Thanks, Damn man you are right, from the left, there is natural light, from above a ceiling light with a yellowish appearance due to a milk shade glass thing around it Because the sun was shining right into the window, I closed the white curtains, making it a white diffuse light. But that was too dark so I turned on the ceiling light. I didn't touch them with my computer, posted them as the camera made them. Looking forward to your post then :) Quote
Gideon Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 If it's too dark to the eyes just increase the exposure time Quote
Bart Posted January 19, 2016 Author Posted January 19, 2016 If it's too dark to the eyes just increase the exposure time That is set as short as possible :P otherwise I've got 'moved' pictures a lot. But I'll try some other settings next time :) Quote
