SkaForHire Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 The Swift Packet is a Class 2 Fast Vessel. The painting seen below shows the Swift Packet carrying the mail to Arlinsport. Under partial rigging, the Swift Packet had just come through a Hurricane. Already repaired twice on this voyage, the Swift Packet had to limp back to Arlinsport for she had no extra sails, rope, or wood to put up the topsail and the Jib. (In reality, Ska had no extra rope, sail, or the right pieces to fully rig her, being most of his collection is in storage and his table is full of GOH materials and not ship materials!) The Swift Packet1 by skaforhire, on Flickr Captain Miles Bryan (bearded) has captained Admiral Woodbrose’s vessels for a long time now. Although not the best sailor, he knows how to barter, and that has helped Woodbrose’s merchant ventures greatly. The Swift Packet is small, fast, and does not hold too much cargo. Bryan likes to take on specie and fine textiles, as both aver very profitable and fit in the small hold. The cabin is comfortable, and sleeps three. DSC_2496 by skaforhire, on Flickr On board this vessel is also Lieutenant Sully Tanner, fresh from his triumphs in the Juniper War where he led the charge to capture Fort Doc Derdon. The first few years after the war there were few commissions in Corrington’s marines, and despite being the nephew of Woodbrose, he was barely able to find a job. With the help of his uncle he was awarded the Royal Courier position for the Belson to Arlinsport route. Often he contracted one of his uncle’s vessels to carry him and the mail to and from Tiberia. This painting depicts his last voyage as courier, as one of Lord Pennington’s favorites, Cordon Dorn. Tanner’s famous, sleeveless red coat, although probably inaccurate as he would have not been dressed in any sort of uniform for his courier position, is prominent in the following painting. tanner by skaforhire, on Flickr Since this journey, Sully has begun to make a name for himself in the New World, he has also grown older and wiser. But those are stories for another time… A few more pictures of The Swift Packet DSC_2505 by skaforhire, on Flickr She is lightly armed with two 6 pounder swivel guns on her(slight) forecastle. Captain Genaro Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 The blue makes me think of Oleon, but perhaps the captain is just showing his true colors . More to the point, this is a nice build, and a good story to justify the lack of rigging. I think the railings could use some more supports along them, but that's a minor point. What part is the wheel? I do not recall seeing anything like that in gray. Quote
Captain Dee Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Wait... you built THAT from a depleted collection? Perhaps I should turn in my cutlass and pistols, put my powdered wig on a shelf and hang up my tricorne. It has a really nice classic look and I like those colors. I'm pleasantly surprised by the blue - I've been wondering if it's use would be an automatic felony in Corrington. I removed all the original blue accents from my SOTL WIP because I was afraid Admiral Woodbrose would tie me to a raft, set me adrift, treble-shot the guns and give me a full broadside. And considering the nature of your other MOC I'm not sure I want to try him! Seriously, this is a fine vessel and I like the way you explained the depleted rigging in the story. You have a nice diverse cast of characters and I am totally digging that groovy sleeveless red coat! Good work. Quote
SkaForHire Posted January 27, 2016 Author Posted January 27, 2016 Thank you! Well, I don't have many "detail" pieces available, but it is the first pirate era ship I have built in a decade, I was happy with everything but the rigging / missing sails. Actually, Scarst is building from the same collection, so we have to share parts right now. I forgot to say, we are Corrington, we are practical, if blue looks nice, we use it. It is those darn bluecoats that get enraged when they see red though. Quote
Vedauwoo Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Beautiful boat! Arrrgh! Me looks forward to sinkin' her! Quote
TitusV Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Quite nice work, with soms great use of parts! Quote
Tomsche Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Her camouflage colours (hehehehe) will surely help her in navigating the zealots waters. I like her lines, she looks indeed a swift packet Quote
Bregir Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Nice ship, Ska - I really like the colourscheme, but my favourite part of this ship is that nicely integrated, sleek cabin. Both in height and in shape it fits into the hull perfectly. I like the diverse group of minifigs. However, I wonder at the fleshie - any particular idea behind him? As to the rigging, I like your rationalisation (IC and OOC ). One suggestion (which might be hard to execute, though.) would be to add some broken spars and sails to emphazise the damage done. But I suppose they have already, in a very seamanlike manner, removed all the broken parts All in all - nice vessel - and nice use of parts. (I like that wheel, although it might be on the modern side.) Quote
Maxim I Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Very classic feel! Too bad the sails are not correct, but that's also the part I struggle the most with! Indexed! Quote
blackdeathgr Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Nice sleek ship. Color choice is nice and so is its shape and crew. What i dont like is sails and the turning wheel it belongs to a motorboat imo). But considering the limited parts selection you had, things turned out pretty good. Oh, did i say that i am in love with that white prefab hull??? Quote

I am fine mixing in scenes. I know others hate it, but it has never bothered me. Nice sleek ship. Color choice is nice and so is its shape and crew. Gideon Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 (edited) The color scheme looks like something I'm considering for my first Oleander vessel I'm about to order the Friends cruise ship hull for that. Other than that (or maybe because of that!) I think it's a nice little ship! Edited February 2, 2016 by Gideon Quote
