Tomsche Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 The second ship I have been building for this month`s Brethren of the Brick Seas , she is a class 1 `Armed Galley`, based on the style of ships from the historical Battle of Lepanto. And since the HMS Green Dragon has returned from month 1`s trade run with a nice cargo hold of spoils, I can license both this one and yesterday`s class 0 in one go, before starting to save up the doubloons to build my city. Those venetian galleys had oars as main propulsion, the small sail granting a small boost in speed, the cannon battery serving for forward firing, and a nasty looking ram to bring enemy galleys to their destiny at the sea's bottom. In-game, this means the class 1A`s can only operate within a single zone during an MCRA action, so she will be assigned escorting duty to the Isandlwana from february onwards. That way, I can get `maximum yield` hopefully from the little wherry, without it going to the seabottom by the first bathtub that looks dirty at it. Storywise, she will be the harbour guard for Quinnsville until the era of far bigger ships break out in the game, and to which end I am building as well at the moment, but that is music for far, far away still. The ram, reinforced in iron to sink enemy ships. It also comes with a forward mounted cannon. Seamen row the galley forwards while guarded by the contignent of royal Marines. The commander of the vessel, Lieutenant Lester, shouts his orders to the rowers while another crewman steers the ship. So now I`m at a manageable `3-ship' fleet, which should get me through the initial stages of the game and provide enough bonus income to start licensing properties near the end of the month for the upcoming builds I`m doing. TitusV Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Very Nice ship, I like that little roof! Quote
Tezclatipoca Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Nice galley ! You're right to protect your trading ships ! We never know where pirates could be... Good build. I like the foreword cannon and the ram. I am not sure of the use of the azure blue. Perhaps white or even black would have been good too. Quote
Captain Dee Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Interesting and colorful design. I've taken some time observing all the little details. This isn't something normally seen in the Pirates forum. The sail seems to be plenty high, and I hope the cannon is well constrained to keep the recoil under control when so close to the oarsmen. The ram certainly looks the part, though it might be more effective lower in the water. I like the posing and the facial expression of the commanding officer is perfect. The backdrop and lighting are really good too - the water is especially well-lit. Quote
Tomsche Posted February 4, 2016 Author Posted February 4, 2016 Yeah, Im not to happy with how high the sail ended up, but I was getting issues with the marines paltfor and shako`s to lower it, and it would obscure the `captain`s cabin` at the back. So I opted for some `liberties` there, as the ship will be sailing to some events this year and people wouldn`t just see a sail and nothing else Quote
Bregir Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 I was wondering when we would see some light galleys/gunboats here! (I have a gunboat coming up, my self) I think you did a pretty good job of cramming in all the necessary details at this scale, with rowers, marines and armament, although the fighting platform does look a bit exposed! Perhaps you should extend the oars a bit, as they are currently having a bit of trouble reaching the water! As Captain Dee, I would suggest lowering the ram a bit, so it appears just at the waterline, where it will obviously do most damage. What are the hull pieces you have used? As to the rigging, the mast should be moved forward a bit, and the sail lowered a bit - right now it would most definitely have a tendency to making her gripe (I think that is the right word: React to violently on the rudder and havea tendency to turn when it shouldn't), and I fear the sail that high up will have a tendency to push her bow down, encumbering her progress... Overall, nice build - I am looking forward to seeing how she does in action! And you really should have some more 1 zone trade ships (for instance building a class 1 T or class 3 Junk/Barge), as you would then be able to trade much more under the same excort! (Or suggest others to do the same to sail with you. ) Quote

Won`t be able to build on her the next week as i`m painting the living room and the kid has holidays so i`ll be totting around a lot on top, then I need to first build the MCRA result and some other small things to set everything ready for the city. But I hope to have her `sea worthy` by Brick mania Wetteren, beginning of april Edited February 5, 2016 by Tomsche Quote
Captain Dee Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Ooh la la! Corrington's fleet is fast growing! Looks pretty good so far, although some of the details are a bit obscure. Seriously, Oleon is falling behind in shipping... and I thought they were our main adversary... Quote
Tomsche Posted February 5, 2016 Author Posted February 5, 2016 I don`t bother to much on detail pics during wips, those masts have been changing place and size at least 4 times in the past two days for example Quote
Captain Dee Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 I get you. Details aren't usually good on overview pics, especially WIPs. I was referring mostly to the lighting. Quote
