Capn Frank Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 (edited) 39d Since the voting is almost done for the Halloween contest, I'll post some more pics of my ship that was in the entry X-D My ship's design is based off of the Half Moon Replica (the website) This was a dutch exploration ship from the early 1600's and is about the same size as my model. *y* As a refresher, here be thumblinks, in order, that i submitted in the contest: And a couple of thumblinks of the crew: Since Mr. Phes, ZCerberus, and I are off driving around in the warthog, i had to get some other ppl to show off this MOC X-D First off, the stern. I was influenced by Mr. Tiber's latest ship design, so i had my entire stern be removable. And who other to help show this than Mr. Tiber himself, with the assistance of Norrington, Evil Willy, and ApophisV: Here're some views of the backside of the stern: One thing i REALLY like about this ship are the crows nest. The one on the mizzen mast isn't that good so i won't get a very good close-up of it. :-P I used bricks like this: instead of these: Here's the view of the bow: Here's the gangway and gun deck. In the thumblinks below, you can see that the gun deck is removable: Then, here's a side view and closeups: Almost done Just gotta get a quick view of the ppl that showed off this ship and a closeup of the cannons: Finally done, now you can comment on it or just leave. :-P Have a great day! Governor Mister Phes Posted November 8, 2007 Governor Posted November 8, 2007 Since Mr. Phes, ZCerberus, and I are off driving around in the warthog, i had to get some other ppl to show off this MOC X-D Diving? Is that what you think I was doing? X-D Quote
El Bucanero Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 A fine ship she is Phred! I'm happy to have inspired you, but.. What's this? you're making me lift the cabin?!? I inspired you and this is what you do?!? :-( Heheh just kidding X-D About your crow's nest technique, what did you do exactly? I can't see it that well (that could be because it's getting late perhaps...) Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 Great ship Phred! *y* I love the platforms and the interior of the stern! However i would have made the stern about 5 bricks lower and then make the side go up from just behind midship.... Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted November 8, 2007 Governor Posted November 8, 2007 That figurehead is fit for a king! You're putting castle pieces to excellent use Sir Phred! Quote
oDDerFisken Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 Fantastic! Very nice work.. Really like the colours. Also like the railing and the way you fastened the ladders. great moc! Quote
Siegfried Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 That is a really nice ship and it's why you got my vote! *wub* . The stern is probably too tall for my taste, but the reference ship looks even taller! 8- Quote
Hinckley Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 I am really amazed by this. It is truly one of the best ships I have seen. Most of my other favorites are massive, but what I like about yours is it looks like it could be produced by LEGO at a reasonable cost but is better than the sets they have released. Now, please forgive me for not knowing the technical names for ship thingies...but my absolute favorite part is the way the masts are stabilized. Um, cool cool cool. That gives it such a nice simple detail that just kicks the realism up a notch! The figurehead is incredibly cool! I am a big fan of interiors so I really appreciate your ingenious access to the cabin and lower deck. I guess the stern may be a little tall, but it only looks out of scale from the back. And I love the detail back there, so I wouldn't change a thing. The only negative thing I can say about it at all is that I don't like the pick with the circular frame around it :-D I really like your cannons as well, but I wonder why some Pirates MOCers don't use the LEGO ones. Are they out of scale? Nice work Phred! It really is inspiring... *wub* Quote
Johnny 5 Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 i love it thecolors are accurate the design is superb and the way you designed it to be easily got inside of is brilliant Quote
Eurobricks Emperor Bonaparte Posted November 9, 2007 Eurobricks Emperor Posted November 9, 2007 You've have based you design on a beautiful ship *wub* Like others said before, this is a fine MOC. I don't think the stern is too big when I compare it with picture of the Half Moon. I like how it looks with all the lovely details (like the blue birds). You are right about the crow nests. They are beautiful! Also the way the rigging is connected to the side of the ship is inventive. Did you already have plans to build this ship prior to the contest or was this really made specifically for the contest? Good idea creating a dedicated thread for your entry and I hope that the other contestants follow your example. Quote
Capn Frank Posted November 9, 2007 Author Posted November 9, 2007 (edited) Woah! Lots of replies after a long night of homework and sleeping 8- Edited November 9, 2007 by phred Quote
Eurobricks Emperor Bonaparte Posted November 9, 2007 Eurobricks Emperor Posted November 9, 2007 As for the crows nest, i'll put some pics together as to how i made it, if ppl would like :-$ Good idea. I would certainly like that and reuse on one of my future ships! Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted November 9, 2007 Governor Posted November 9, 2007 I know! Let's sail Phred's merchant ship to Gui's extended dock... I could have sworn Gui extended the dock for the very purpose of letting Phred's ship moor there X-D Quote
Capn Frank Posted November 9, 2007 Author Posted November 9, 2007 ...I could have sworn Gui extended the dock for the very purpose of letting Phred's ship moor there X-D That would be a superb dock to make bluff *y* P Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted November 9, 2007 Governor Posted November 9, 2007 Well go tell Gui that in his thread. Meanwhile I'm going to conduct a little experiment... Quote
Lord Of Pies Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 Very nice ship indeed! I love the colour scheme and the lifting mechanism is very nifty!! *y* :-$ Quote
Capn Frank Posted November 9, 2007 Author Posted November 9, 2007 (edited) Well i made a bunch of pics of me crows nest Arrrr Well first off here's a thumb-link of your typical mast. On the back of the top-mast place a Bracket 2 x 2 - 1 x 4. This is what holds up the whole crows nest X-D Then put on a couple of Plate 2 x 2 Corner pieces and a 1 x 4 plate. On top of those plates, place 2 1 x 6 plates on top. Now you put on the string. On here and on my merchant ship, i used one piece of string for each mast. I recommend looping the further back portions of the rigging where it connects to the hull first. And then alternate side to side as you keep "looping" forward. When the "looping" is complete is should look something like this X-D Now that the complex part is complete *y* Next, you place one 1 x 6 plate, one 1 x 8 plate, and one 2 x 10 plate. Then you place two 3 x 3 wedge plates, three 2 x 4 plates, two 1x1 plates, and one 1 x 10 plate. After that it's pretty much up to you. I recommend placing more string from this crows next to the top of the mast. Oh and here's the semi-finished product. Tah-dah! This crows nest is 6x10. The smallest i recommend with this technique is a 6x8. It's real easy to go bigger too *y* Let me know if i need to describe something better X-D P Phredit: Once Captain Greenhair is done with his rigging tutorial, i'd like to try his type of rigging on this type of a crows nest. X-D Edited November 9, 2007 by phred Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 That's a good idea for a platform, looks great without those grip things on the side of the standard ones! I might have to stea...err use that technique sometime! Just one question Phred, how do you make the top platforms? Quote
Errorist Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 So thats how you do it *sweet* That's a better technique for the rigging than the one i came up with. Would you use the same technique if you were to build manholes in your crow's nests though? Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted November 18, 2007 Governor Posted November 18, 2007 Phred is so clever! I have a question for Mr Phred... Quote
Capn Frank Posted November 19, 2007 Author Posted November 19, 2007 Thanx for the compliments guys ...Just one question Phred, how do you make the top platforms? Do you mean, how do i make the top of the platforms? *wacko* ...Would you use the same technique if you were to build manholes in your crow's nests though? It probably would work if the crowsnest were big enough. That's would definitely worth something to try on my next small ship X-D ...I have a question for Mr Phred... And your question is? :-$ P Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted November 19, 2007 Posted November 19, 2007 Do you mean, how do i make the top of the platforms? No the platforms that are at 3/4 and the top of the masts? Quote
