blackdeathgr Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 Since ages well forgotten, atop rock formations one can usually find plenty fortifications. One such fortification is the examle below. And where the rock left something to be desired as far as defense is concerned, fine Oleander engineers filled the gap with their awesome sloped wall ™ technique! So, behold the result and let nobody say that Oleanders don't know how to defend themselves! Roleplaying aside, i made this attempt at a sloped fort as i wanted to see how well do sloped walls blend into rock formations. Inspiration came from the great venician fortification at Crete. A big thanks to those that contributed their ideas while on WIP status (Cpt Genaro, Mpyromaxos, Ardohoth etc) More on Flickr. Thanks for watching! Quote
Bregir Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 Looking good, BD. I think the sloped walls blend in tolerably well. For defensive purposes, the bulwarks seem on the low side, and I think I would suggest a more pronounced slope to the main walls, to better deflect gunfire. I also wonder where they store the gunpowder and shot, and how it is brought to the guns when under siege. The little tower is nice, as is the flat surface and the flagpole. The rockwork is simple, but effective. Well done! Quote
TitusV Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 Very Nice fort, with a great wall-technique! Good job! Quote
SilentWolf Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 I'm not anecessarily expert on rockwork but I do really like the way this one turned out. The slope is well done. The top looks very much like I should expect a fortification to be. I see the entrance below but don't see where it comes out on the top level. Did I miss it? Quote
Captain Braunsfeld Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 sloped wall ™ But still fine and solid! Quote
blackdeathgr Posted May 24, 2016 Author Posted May 24, 2016 Thanks guys for your comments! Well about the access to the main floor subject, i totally forgot to make a (non opening-reddish brown tiled) hatch. But you can always imagine there is one, right? So for now ladders will do? When i finally get around making the whole fort, i surely wont miss it! Quote
Capt Wolf Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 An appropriately titled thread! It is indeed a fine fortification. The sloped walls look great -- although I refuse to recognize your trademark! I like that it is built into a natural rock formation. Well done! Quote
Mpyromaxos Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 Nice fort! Loved your curved wall technique and the flag!! Quote
Gideon Posted May 27, 2016 Posted May 27, 2016 Great mix of natural and minifig-made fortifications! I agree however that the battlements are a bit too low to feel safe Two comments on the photography: The brightness is a bit too low, increasing it an "exposure stop" or two would probably make it a bit more balanced. The other thing is that I'm always nitpicking when builders crop the edges of the "overview shots". If almost the whole build is in the frame I think the composition looks better with the whole build in the frame. Don't hesitate in cropping heavily for closeup shots however! Quote
blackdeathgr Posted May 27, 2016 Author Posted May 27, 2016 Thanks everybody for your kind words! Great mix of natural and minifig-made fortifications! Regarding brightness, i, too was concerned about it as i was shooting from a non state of the art mobile phone (fiance got our "better" camera equipped phone that i normally use for a 2 week trip) and i could tell the difference from day one. I was constantly shifting/tilting the phone up and down so as for the photos to be more bright. I must seriously buy one or two cool colored lamps for indoor shooting because waiting at the balcony at 7am for the sun to rise is too irritating). So, as a result from this mobile phone/brightness issue that completely ruined my nerve system, i couldn't find a decent photograph that wasn't cropped and looked good at the same time, so i left that cropped one in the end. For my next MOCs i must surely invite Mpyromaxos for a coffee/photographing at my house Quote
Kolonialbeamter Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 Neat fort, BD, as usual And good thinking registering that technique! Now we can sue all of you others building effective forts Integration of the rock - check, well done! Agree with the others, however, the breastwork is a bit too low, and those guys need a hatch. Apart from that, great work! Oh, and neat flag, too Quote

Oh, wait, this technique hasn't been used yet About the breastwork as everybody said it is indeed low and doesnt really protects anybody In my next fort attempts i will definitely solve this issue and will also add a much needed hatch else our troops will flat out refuse to fight! Regarding the flag KB, you are the one to receive my many thanks as you are the designer of this awesome pattern . In fact, for every Oleander flag you see in my MOCs, respects go to KB, as well as to Kustom Bricks for politely transforming KB's digital version into the sticker version i am using. Many thanks again! Quote
