Peppermint_M Posted June 5, 2016 Posted June 5, 2016 LEGO Architecture is an interesting and attractive collection of sets. From the Sears Tower to the Burj Khalifa, many internationally famous buildings have been recreated in a pleasing LEGO form. These world-renowned buildings are special of course, some of us are fortunate enough to live close by. But what about our local landmarks? The structures we are familiar with and enjoy spotting. The building we see and know we're nearly home? Those special things that set our town apart from the next one over? So we at Eurobricks have decided to launch a building contest to recreate a place, building or other structure in LEGO Architecture style. With a number of wonderful prizes generously donated by The LEGO Group. To enter you need to build a local landmark within the design aesthetic of LEGO Architecture and post a picture of your creation next to a photo of the local landmark. Here's my Example; The Newport Transporter Bridge, a landmark in South Wales that is actually just at the end of the street I work on! You don't need to add the labels, I was fortunate to have some printed up for me. There are a few more rules to follow: The Rules Entries must be posted by midnight GMT, July 3rd. One entry per member. Entries must be similar in size to an official release LEGO Architecture set. Entries should be new (never posted anywhere previously) and be similar in style to the previous official TLG releases. All entries are to include only real LEGO. No clone brands, 3rd party parts, or digital entries allowed. Decals will be allowed if you've made them yourself, but no cutting, sculpting or modifying parts. Entries are to be placed in their own entry topic in the Special Themes forum. The title of the topic should begin with "[Local Landmark]" and then give the name of the entry. The entry post (first post in your entry topic) may be edited at any time up to the end of the contest, so feel free to make improvements if you wish. Entries are to consist of no more than 5 posted pictures of 1024x768 pixels or smaller resolution but may also include a link to a folder of additional images of any size. The first picture will be used for your entry in the voting thread. Entries require at least One photo of the real landmark that can be compared to the entry, no more than 1024x768 pixels. This is not counted in the total pictures rule set above. Get a picture from the internet, take your own or find one somehow, but there has to be one. Photos of your creation can be manipulated with Photoshop for levels, proportions and color correction but may not include graphic enhancements. We reserve the right to disqualify any entry that does not follow these rules. Winners will be decided by public vote. The Prizes 1st place will receive #21028 New York 2nd place will receive #21031 Burj Khalifa So build and enjoy! Quote
mediumsnowman Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 Ooh, good idea for a contest. I'll have to come up with something. Shouldn't this be pinned? Quote
CM4Sci Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 I feel like the prizes should be switched cause the Burj Khalifa set is way bigger. But, oh boy another contest! Quote
KamalMYafi Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 Great Contest! I've done making my local landmark in LDD today, but sadly digital entries aren't allowed. Quote
Bob De Quatre Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 I feel like the prizes should be switched cause the Burj Khalifa set is way bigger. But, oh boy another contest! New york's set has more parts and is more expensive. Quote
Sir Brickalot Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 Wow, I live right by there too! What a coincidence! Great contest by the way! Quote
rodiziorobs Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 Is there any restriction on what kind of buildings we might base our entry on? I am wondering specifically about religious-themed buildings but the question might apply to other buildings such as casinos, etc, that also fall outside of what TLG is willing to produce. Quote
Peppermint_M Posted June 6, 2016 Author Posted June 6, 2016 Wow, I live right by there too! What a coincidence! Great contest by the way! I sat out on the lawn to eat my lunch with it in full view just today . I have little scratch plans to try to make a working Technic version, that bridge has fascinated me since I was a little 'un. Is there any restriction on what kind of buildings we might base our entry on? I am wondering specifically about religious-themed buildings but the question might apply to other buildings such as casinos, etc, that also fall outside of what TLG is willing to produce. If you approach it from an architectural point instead of trying to make any sort of moral/political/religious presentation then it should be okay. After all, many towns have a cathedral or church as their best known landmark (Take Canterbury for example...). Quote
TheWarden Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 Huh, neat idea for a contest. I've never actually entered a LEGO contest (done raffles and NNovvember) but this is really up my alley and it's a topic and scale I've been wanting to try. A while back I got the New York set and The LEGO Architect by Tom Alphin and just loved them but haven't really MOCced anything. I have some ideas already. I've never put myself on a MOC deadline before, but I hope I can be determined to finish something and just give it a try! Quote
rollermonkey Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 Should make it so 1st place gets to choose. I already have NYC, but not the new Burj. Quote
Robert8 Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 What a great year for contests here on EB The CMF Series 15 vignettes, the Maze contest, the LDD and now this... I hope this trend will go on and we'll have a CMF Series 16 vignettes contest Quote
AnnaBuildsLego Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 This is really cool, thanks so much for the contest! I'm not really super into the Architecture theme, but this sounds like such a fun idea and I know just the thing to try to build! Thanks and good luck all! Quote
legorevival Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 Hey Guys! This contest is a great idea! Good luck everyone taking part! I have some questions too. How do you define local? Am I allowed to pick a building only from the village/town/city where I live? Or only from my home country? Or from anywhere I choose? Did you use the title "Local Landmarks" to encourage us to pick the most symbolic buildings of any location? Quote
Peppermint_M Posted June 7, 2016 Author Posted June 7, 2016 Hey Guys! I'm asking for something close to you. That can count as something favourite in your "Local" City, it could be a location in the area you live in or some structure you see near your work (Like my example build). If you are really stuck for something, a "national" location could be chosen but I would prefer something you see in person on at least a semi-regular basis or that is iconic of your locality. Quote
Blondie-Wan Posted June 13, 2016 Posted June 13, 2016 I was planning on submitting an entry for the Maze contest but never finished it; who knows whether I'll get this project done in time to enter this contest. That said... I was actually already thinking about an Architecture-style creation I intend to submit soon to LEGO Ideas. I haven't submitted it yet - it's not even built yet, nor will it be the next thing I build - but assuming I do get it done in time, I assume it's acceptable to submit it for both this contest and then to LEGO Ideas, as long as I do it here first, right? Also, does it have to be local to me? This project of mine is for a building in a different country on a different continent, albeit one I visited once when I was quite young. There's no way for me to get to it now, though, although there are pictures of it on the Internet (which I was planning on using as photo reference, of course). Quote
Peppermint_M Posted June 14, 2016 Author Posted June 14, 2016 Sorry it wouldn't qualify. This contest has to be a structure local to you and that sounds very far away from Local. Quote
mnpumar Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 Great contest idea! Looking forward to seeing the entries Quote
Matt The Tuba Guy Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 This sounds interesting. I have built something like this which turned out surprisingly good. I actually built it as a show set, but it ended up too big, so it ended up as an exhibitor set which may or may not go ahead due to part availability and prices on Bricklink. Since it isn't eligible, I might as well post it in here. I hope that is ok. The interesting thing about this building is that it no longer exists thanks to the earthquakes we had 5 years ago. Would it count even though the building no longer exists? If not, I may have problems finding something worth building! Quote
CM4Sci Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 Other than that ^ are there seriously no entries yet? I'm trying to make mine on LDD first before I do the actual buiild, but come on people!! Quote
Peppermint_M Posted June 20, 2016 Author Posted June 20, 2016 A LEGO replica of a now lost local landmark is just fine. It acts like a tribute too. Quote
TheWarden Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 About 2 weeks left to go! I'm happy to report that I think my entry is progressing according to schedule and I hope to finish and post in about a week. I'm trying to add one detail and part of one section needs a color swap as I blocked it out in rainbow get the shaping right. Quote
greg3 Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 Just finished putting my entry together... Should have it photographed and posted tomorrow!! Quote
LegoRacer1 Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 I think this is a good contest and will be very fun !!!! Quote
