Guys,

I remember Phes posting some cheap Coko rip offs of Lego - guess what too bad for them Lego won ;)

Phes will be happy: look at the difference of that Pirate ship :oo

"As a result of the Market Court judgment, Biltema is not permitted to sell Coko bricks in Finland unless they are modified so that they can no longer be mistaken for LEGO bricks The judgment extends, for all practical purposes, to a sales ban.. The Market Court also found that Biltema had abused the goodwill of the LEGO Group while creating the risk of confusion on the commercial origin in respect of the Coko products, the quality of which was considered inferior to that of the original LEGO products" (B & I added by me)

i have to say that these competitors are really aggressive these days. they're not even trying to hide the fact that they're copying Lego bricks any more... in the last few years we've seen some toys in europe that are almost the same as, or close to, the lego toys, and i'm really not happy with that. TLC should be protected a lot better by European legislation against this form of piracy. unfortunely, europe is hiding behind free market fanatics...

I was kind of hoping these "ripoff" brands would demonstrate to LEGO there was still a market for the products they used to make.

I say "good riddance to bad rubbish"... The fact that many of these rip-off brands design their packaging to completely reflect LEGO means they are trying to make money off the LEGO brand name, or they are trying to trick people into believing they are truly LEGO... They had these types in South Korea (I was stationed there), where a pic on the box was actually a pic that is copyrighted by TLC, but when the box is opened, it reveals pieces that are not pictured, a variety of neon-looking colors, & no colors that match the pic on the box... There is no market for that rubbish...

Did anybody see that Asian company called "Brick" sell LEGO sets? They were official LEGO sets except the LEGO logo was replaced by the BRICK Logo. Was that official or a scam?

It is a scam, like I said, these companies are trying to dupe people into believing that their blocks are really LEGO... The name of their blocks does not seem important, because it changes quite frequently (probably a way of avoiding lawsuits). I saw Coko, Blocks, Brick, Blocko, LOGO, and others while i was stationed in South Korea for a year alone. All had the same packaging, consisting of stolen pics from original LEGO sets, but just the name was different... they all appeared to have the same lack of quality and mismatching colors...

I never actually bought any of the BRICK sets, but they appeared to be the same as their LEGO counterparts, just a different logo on the box. I think they also ripped off the MegaBlok military sets too.

I had bought a BRICK set a few years ago, and I can attest to the fact that they are far inferior to LEGO in every way. Aside from the colors being completely different, the bricks bend & break easily... Although, a company called "best-lock" won a lawsuit about a year and a half ago over LEGO, allowing them to sell their 'construction sets' (TLC is still fighting it), but here are a good examples of Best-Lock items up on e-Bay right now...

Phony MegaBlocks

Phony LEGO Pirate Ship

Phony LEGO Pirate ship #2

Due to the Best-Lock win (so far) over TLC, it may be a sign that other clone brands will be able to flood the market with products as well (which may cause our beloved LEGO to lose profits). Although Best-Lock is typically selling its own original items, here's a link to a product catalog:

Best-Lock Construction Toys

I bought one of these sets a while back, and they are NOT the same quality of LEGO, and the colors do not match LEGO either, so don't get your hopes up... but they do produce Military sets, which seems to be their biggest sellers... probably why they are still around today ;)

I remember a while ago there were some 'Lego' sets at a dollar store and I got one. It was set 6008 Royal King.

http://www.brickset.com/search.aspx?Set=6008-1

But anyways when I opened it the horse was red and came in 3 pieces and the sword and crown were wight! I'll try and get some pics (if I can find the pieces).

did you report this to Lego? i think you should...

Would LEGO sue for this ripoff out rage?

i believe they are trying to deal with piracy, as Master Yoda stated earlier...

i think the main thing is that TLC has to show this type of organised crime, because that's what it is, that these activities are not allowed. but also the distributor should get the message to be more careful with the products they're selling. if this wasn't Lego, but a copied cd, for instance, they would officially be charged as an accomplice.

the only way to deal with this is not only to fight the producer of illegal stuff, but also to alert all distributors in the West

To win this war against infringement, we need strong legislation and NOT the damages award system.

In the US there are all the cases where SUVs are NOT safe. Instead of spending millions and millions of $ to make them safe, car producers prefer to settle a couple of deaths/injuries out of court per year!!!!!!!!! Thus spending less money ragardless of the peoples own safety!!!!

Damages are not the solution - doesn't hurt producers that much unfortunatly BUT refraining from producing, that is a whole other story!!

you kinda lost me, buddy... can't really see the link between your example and the lego piracy question...

mister_phes, SUV stands for Sport Utility Vehicle

snefroe1, I was just trying to show that awarding high punitive damages will not help Lego in preventing IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) infringementssuch as logo, trademark, designs, models...
