Sorry to be a party pooper, but I don't think these sets copare well. Any reason why you chose Town Plan as opposed to Green Grocer? I think that would have been a more fair comparison.

Green Grocer isn't even out yet. I like to at least wait until some of the members own the set.

In addition, I like to compare somewhat different sets. Both sets are similarly priced, but completely different styles. Both have a high level of appeal (as one is a component of a cityscape and the other, a stand alone set with multiple buildings, and a great collectible. Let's see how they rate before you say that the comparison is not a fair one. It is a tough decision (at least for me).

I voted Cafe Corner because if you're gonna have a big city set, it has to have a big building. I love town plan but each part could be a separate set. Cafe Corner is in a league of its own....

Not saying that Town Plan isn't spectacular of course, if anything I'd rather see "Plan" sets in other themes instead of biggies. Castle could have a great village, space a moonbase with different sections, and Pirates a dock layout. But for city, this is one of the only themes where buildings are a large staple, so despite the beauty of Town Plan, I think a really big, detailed building is better for that theme.

Interesting point. I tend to go with the "Classic" look of the Town Plan and the thought that it includes three buildings vs. one. To me, it is more like a complete set reminiscent of classics like 1592 Town Square that is a great stand-alone set.

Good point, and I can see where you're coming from. I would like to see more town oriented plan sets, but just not on the scale of Town Plan. The set you listed is a fantastic example, but its also still nice and small. A giant AFOL empty-your-wallets set I think is best reserved for something big, becuse while layout sets are brilliant, they can also be made a nice reasonable size for all buyers.

Our differing opinions re. these two set styles are exactly why I'm comparing them (see Sinner's comments above). Both sets are very different and I was curious what style is more appreciated by Lego City fans. I appreciate your thoughts in regard to comparing them.

Thankyou. You've certainly swayed my opinion a bit. I still hold that Cafe Corner is more appropriate, but certainly appreciate sets like Town Plan a bit more now. Out of curiosity, do you own any or both of them?

I voted Town Plan, as if I were to have one of those sets, I'd definately pick town plan, as it's a stand-alone set, and a great start for a town. *y*

I would have to say these are very difficult to chose between. As I look at both and compare them, I see a key ingredient for each one. When it comes to the Town Plan, I like the fact that TLC took the "Classic" town concept and released this set for the anniversary. When it comes to the Cafe Corner, I like how TLC created this model with that more "realistic" look. Overall I think both are great additions to any town layout. I would have to definitly think about these sets before I voted. A very tough decision to make.

I'm having a hard time with this one. They're both "must haves" but for different reasons.

I just can't break it down into which one I like more without it being a "modular vs old style system" decision. I tried it as a "which is more worth the price" and didn't get there either. I'm going to have to think about this.

And to that one I shall not answer in the poll. Why ? Because I love both styles but they both are in a separate galaxy to me

* Modular Style (i.e. CC): those sets are really something designed for AFOLs and are simply stunning in terms of design, building techniques...and price

* Special Style (sorry couldn't think of any better term for TP): that is an amazing set that I will include in my upcoming city !!

I guess it all depends whe we want to do with those. I wouldn't integrate the modular sets in my city because I love the smaller feel of 80's buildings but I will buy them all and have them placed to ether for display.

I do love both styles, want to see both styles in the future and I can't decide :-P

EDIT: BTW Brickster, an idea just stroke me, why not inclue a third category there with Eiffel Tower and Upcomming Islamic Beauty called the Taj Mahal ? After all its also related to city from a very wide perspective (straecth that one on !!) and also was deigned for AFOLs. Just a tought ;-)

While I can't say what one is better, if I had a choice of what one to buy I probably would buy Cafe Corner as I would rather have a town made like that. *wub* I do love so much of Town Plan though but I already have a service station and I think it would look odd with the modular buildings... At this stage Green Grocer is looking mighty appetising! X-D

Interesting points made by all. This "Face-Off" appears to be more a comparison between the new Lego city building concept (large single detailed building) and a classic style of a combined city (or group of buildings) in a single set.

If you are unsure of which you like better, ask yourself, which set would you buy if you could have one or the other. I want both for different reasons myself, and am not sure which to buy first.

These challenges are so difficult that adding another set (like the Eiffel Tower or even another mini-fig scale building) would make the decision too complex (at least for me). I do like to keep them between two sets. That's why it's a two set "face-off".

As far as David vs. Mona Lisa goes, I think I'd prefer the painting. It may have something to do with the Da Vinci Code mystery thing, but what the hay!
