WesternOutlaw Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 I sit here many evenings typing away on EB and/or other forums; and as I do so, I sometimes think, I could be building, but this is more fun. Considering your time on EB, does this detract you from building excellent MOCs or building in general. I would say that it does me, but I should also point out that I enjoy the computer time , esp. EB. What are your thoughts on this subject? Do you spend too much time on the computer? Or) How do you balance your computer vs. Lego building time? I'd be interested in hearing what different EB members feel re. this topic. Quote
Brickmaster Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 I spend much more time on forums and computer in general, than building legos (mostly from the horrid state of my lego rooms and such.. yuck!) :-$ I hope to change this though, but it is a slow, painful process. Computer is relaxing and slow, takes little thought, compaired to the idea purging lego building experience - usually takes energy, and thought, but in a good, fun, creative way ;-) Quote
Batbrick Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 I probably spend too much time on here, though lately it has not detracted from my newfound love of Lego building, as you can see in my sig. Just today I built an APC and supply truck, yesterday the Deep Sea Crawler, and the day before that something else. It was definitely a problem before though, I enjoyed my time on here so much I forgot what we're all on here for: LEGO! :-D But now I've reached a nice balance, and I deeply enjoy MOCing. I balance this out by going to my room often after the computer, and keeping containers in an easy spot to just start mocing and let my imagination run wild. Batbrick Away! >:-) Quote
WesternOutlaw Posted February 14, 2008 Author Posted February 14, 2008 though lately it has not detracted from my newfound love of Lego building, as you can see in my sig. Interesting thoughts, but what do you mean "newfound love". Are you a new Lego builder/collector (or) perhaps just new to building MOCs? Quote
Batbrick Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 Interesting thoughts, but what do you mean "newfound love". Are you a new Lego builder/collector (or) perhaps just new to building MOCs? Bulding mocs. I've collected Lego sets on and off my whole life, and over the last three years have gotten way back into it. I only displayed them for a while, but lately I've discovered the great fun of Mocing and started to make just about anything really. It also makes having all those bricks feel more worthwhile, knowing they won't just be collecting dust on shelves (no offense intended, of course ;-) ), but I also love having them on display, so I have a three way lego hobby going: Here on EB, Making constantly changing displays, and mocing too. All in all this leaves not much time left either though, but its all good fun. That said, while I am certainly not new to Lego, I am fairly new to large scale collecting. Batbrick Away! >:-) Quote

And no offense taken. My collection pretty much stays in boxes after a display for a week or two. I get bored with them and hate to see them collecting dust. Quote

Thats one thing I hate too, dust, I'm hoping to get cupboard doors one day to minimise the damage. If you don't mind me asking, how long have you been into Lego? I know its been far longer than I, I also recall you collecting Playmobil too, how did that begin? Batbrick Away! >:-) Quote
Shadows Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 I wouldn't blame EB or the net for it, but my building time is very low. A lot of that has to do with time spent organizing and the somewhat overwhelming feeling of hopelessness that brings. 8-| Whenever I buy a new set, I open it, assemble the minifigs to make sure they're all present, look through the parts for anything unique or special, then ziplock the whole lot and box it back up until I'm ready to deal with it permanently. I put the minifigs in tiny little bags of their own. I have piles of sets in that condition. On occasion, a set will be so great that I want to keep it out, and I'll break down an existing one to make space, or move things a little closer together. Needless to say, space is a big issue for me, more than time. I do spend a lot of time here though, and I enjoy it far too much to give any of it up. Since I can't be as creative with my building in this situation, I have been channeling my creativity into writing things for the site or working on projects (mostly EB News and Pirates projects), plus posting of course. Siegfried Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 Are you sure that you weren't the TheQuizster in a past life? :-P The problem that I have is that my job is on the computer, I am my own boss, and set my own hours. Thus I tend to spend 5 minutes here, 5 minutes there... and it can be hard to track. (I plan to write a program soon to do this for me though. Yes I am serious. :-D ) Overall though, it is hard for me to tell if I could translate EB time into actual Building Time, but I do plan to increase my building time this year. Today both my kids went to school all day for the first time, and this new routine will free up a lot of potential Building Time! *wub* Quote
LuxorV Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 I spend most of my time on EB during the day (I don't have coffee, so EB is my coffee break at work X-D ), and I try to build at evening or night time. The conflict (if it may be called so 8-| ) is during week-ends, when I browse here and BS and have my bricks at hand. So, when I find nice ideas or inspirations on the net, I leave the PC and start building, or jump around the room from PC to bricks and vice versa *wacko* . LuxorV Quote
Ricecracker Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 i spend way more time on EB than i do building :-$ although im trying to start building more and go on EB less (so i have more time to build), and since my mocs/mods tend to take a lot of time, i usually get spend 10 minute a day working on them, then come back to them later....... crazy me off *wacko* Quote
natelite Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 nah. like all good employees, my EB time takes away from my working time. :-P my building time takes away my family time but i hardly have time to build tbh. most of my lego time is spent sorting bulk purchases and making sure the used sets are in good condition (no bite marks or heavy discoloration)...it's not as easy as it seems maintaining a BL shop. i'm just going to deal with new misb sets going forward because used bricks take too much effort. new sets have higher premium too and packing requires minimal effort of putting a complete set into a larger box and ship. used, you still need to count and verify vs peeron or BL. you also need to check each brick to make sure they aren't heavily used or damaged. if incomplete you need to go scour BL for replacement parts which again takes time and money. :-/ Quote
zero1312 Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 Nah, I don't think the two are taking away my time. I've set my priorities straight. ;-) Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 Depends on my energy level, when i'm slow, i'm here. But otherwise i build. But yeah sometimes there is so much fun going on, it does take away my building time :-D Quote
WesternOutlaw Posted February 15, 2008 Author Posted February 15, 2008 Are you sure that you weren't the TheQuizster in a past life? Pollster X-D (I think that was one of my titles for a while). Quote
ExoBuilder Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 Another nice topic Brickster *y* I would say I spend alot more time on here than with my Lego *wub* I gotta get some inspiration somewhere buddy :-D *wub* Quote
Captain Ka-Boom Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 I should be out surfing waves instead of surfing the web. When i get a bike rack I might ditch you all. |-/ Not likely! Quote
