SirNadroj Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 (Possible Spoilers) Hello! I present my minifigure scale, real working oil derrick, as seen in There Will Be Blood. Thanks to all who helped me with suggestions Flickr! This oil derrick ends up both exploding and catching fire in the film. The explosion also cause serious harm to a main character (won't say anything else) ;-) I put a motor in it so it actually works. You can see the video on youtube in the link below. See the video of it actually working here: See the scene from the film here: (spoilers) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j05bN6LmhRs More pictures here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sirnadroj/ I spent a few weeks on this baby, and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Vicariously, your feedback is always taken to heart and apprecaited. Thanks for looking! *sweet* Quote
iamded Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 You mean this actually mine's oil?! Awesome! No? It actually blows up?! Wicked! No? It actually moves like a mini replica of a real Oil Derrick?! Fantastic! :-D Great job here, SirNadroj, it's so cool, I love how you've done the details of the crossing wooden beams. *y* And the landscape around it makes it that much better, great job! *y* ~Peace Quote
casewindu Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 (edited) (there will be) bloody hell Sirnadroj I can't believe this actually works aswell! :'-) Its marvelous but it annoys me that it only took you afew weeks, it would take me alot longer! :'-( I love the little wires holding this huge thing down, but does this massive big thing mean the last of there will be blood? May you be now moving onto a new film perhaps? Edited March 29, 2008 by casewindu Quote
cartoondude Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 Awsome moc :-D If only i had one *sniff* *sniff* :'-( what set did you get all the brown pieces on the tower from. Loved there will be blood once again so cool Quote
WetWired Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 nice work!, may I ask do you order parts specifically for your MOCs? or do you have a large collection of pieces to build from? at the moment my collection is pretty small so I order parts specifcally. I do have a lot of old pieces from about 100 sets I had as a child, but I don't like mixing them with new parts :) Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 Wow, excellent work sirnadroj. i love that it is all brown! *y* One question though, how did you attach the crossbeams to the mainbody stucture? Are these just clamped in, or are they attached in some magical way? Quote
goggleson Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 The bigness...the hugeness! This is just insane.I'm suprised bricklink hasn't shut down 'cause of this :-D Quote
Ronan Nissen Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 Tell me how you do things this good!?!? Quote
Asuka Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 A great and wonderful work, an ingeniously designed derrick with some realistic looking surroundings and a fantastic looking oil burst, the idea of adding a motor´s pretty smart too, all you need now´s some luck, a proper parcel and thr drilling on! X-D Quote
SirNadroj Posted April 3, 2008 Author Posted April 3, 2008 Thanks for the feedback! I'm really happy you like it ~ I put lots of effort into it! And money. X-D I love the little wires holding this huge thing down, but does this massive big thing mean the last of there will be blood?May you be now moving onto a new film perhaps? Is this the last of TWBB? Don't know yet. The film comes out on DVD 4/8/08, so I'll have to rewatch it to see if there are any others scenes that would work well. I can think of a couple now, actually. ;-) A new film? Hmmm.... this was the last one I saw in theaters, so nothing planned yet. I'd like to go see "The Ruins" though. *skull* nice work!, may I ask do you order parts specifically for your MOCs? or do you have a large collection of pieces to build from? Sometimes I order parts, and sometimes I use my collection. If you can believe, Mrs. Lovett's Meat Pie Emporium was only from my collection! I'd didn't have to order a single piece. As for this, I ordered the brown elements, and I used the tan from my collection for the landscaping. So it's a combo. *sweet* One question though, how did you attach the crossbeams to the mainbody stucture? Are these just clamped in, or are they attached in some magical way? They just rest in between the beams. It's surprisingly stable, actually. I had a really tough time with those crossbeams, let me tell you! :-$ Quote
Siegfried Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 Great work! I've been trying to get around to watching that video and I at last did today. It's always good to see people adding function to MOCs; Lego is so good for it but so few people take advantage of it... :'-( (The music was a bit much though; is that from the movie?) The only part of the MOC that I don't like are the cross beams.... but aside from buiding it out of technic I have no better ideas! :-D Quote
Lt. Col. Thok Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 Amazing! I trust that you watched TwBB quite a few times to get the exact shape, right? Quote
Dovchenko Posted April 12, 2008 Posted April 12, 2008 (edited) You're a natural, I haven't seen the video yet, but I will tommorrow. Loving those hinges, and your methods are- ...MY BOY! ...sorry. Edited April 12, 2008 by sdpirate Quote

The only part of the MOC that I don't like are the cross beams.... but aside from buiding it out of technic I have no better ideas! :-D Thanks! The music is a score called "Convergence" from the Bodysong soundtrack, by artist Johnny Greenwood. He did the music for TWBB, too, but he reused the score for the scene when the derrick explodes. It is a bit annoying, isn't it. I can't even sit through the whole thing! Amazing! I trust that you watched TwBB quite a few times to get the exact shape, right? I saw it once, then got reference pics online. I've seen it again since this, though. It came out on DVD last Tuesday. You're a natural, I haven't seen the video yet, but I will tommorrow. Klaus-Dieter Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 (edited) That's an awesome MOC, Sir Nadroj! (Unluckily I firstly noticed it now (after a hint of Quarryman) .) I really  it! This oil derrick is a very nice idea turned into an amazing MOC ! I really like the style how you built it and that there is some additional stuff like e. g. this barrack there, too. This would be a very well cornerstone for an official Lego Western set ! Very, very well done! EDIT: And the movie is of course excellent, too! BTW: Perhaps you want to look in on Ideas for new sets (Wild West only) (where I took your idea for a new set proposal ), on We want Wild West! and on all the other nice Western oriented topics?!
