I love Model Team and have voted Yes but I am not sure of the validity of any poll in which you tell people which way to vote regardless of what they actually feel? If you don't want No votes a more accurate and more realistic way of collecting support would be to either ask those against not to vote at all or simply to have a thread instead of a poll in which people could post to express their support.

Cheers

Yes, me too!!!! :pir-blush:

I agree, but with the reservation that models should not be compromised by commercial constraints (OK, I accept that's not realistic!).

The poll should have the opportunity of a "no" vote if it is to represent the strength of support within the section of the community that has an opinion strong enough to express a preference. Otherwise it is no more than a petition.

I prefer the original Model Team sets, such as 5580 and 5590, to the newer ones. I think it follows the trend in some other themes (notably 12V trains) where sets brought out in further years are never quite as good as the initial sets that began the theme (compare 7745 with 7740).

In particular I didn't like the replacement for 5590 having too few wheels on its trailer.

What I would prefer even more than a straight return of Model Team would be a full cross between Model Team and Technic. This could result in decent 1:13 scale trucks, which would be as good a challenge as a UCS Millennium Falcon or Taj Mahal.

The poll did originally have a No option but due to sudgestions I changed my mind.

I think I will once again double back and add an option for those of you that don't like it, shame on you :pir-laugh:

  • 3 months later...

I had the misfortune of not being old enough for Model Team when it was around and I don't exactly have the money to buy them on BL or ebay :cry_sad: however, I have seen the sets and I would love to see the theme return - especially if we get big 1:13 models. I love those old foam tires that were actually proportioned right!

I had some Model Team sets... but I much prefer minifigure scale. So far I'm the only one who's voted against a return.

:skull:

I would certainly like to see it return, or to see Model Team-like sets in the Creator or UCS themes. Model Team was essentially a UCS line with realistic vehicles instead of Star Wars ships.

A few of the Creator vehicles have actually been pretty comparable to Model Team, especially the smaller MT sets. Although you do sometimes get the feel that they cut back on some obvious things in the models in order to save costs.

Well, 5580's successor was much better than it overall. I agree with you about 5590 though.

Yeah, this would be the best thing. The original Creator line in 2003 had reasonably detailed vehicles with some Technic functionality, but TLG never built upon that in future Creator sets.

We still have Model Team, it's just part of Creator now ;)

That's very true!

Creator model team is no where as good as real model team

Depends on how you look at it. Creator is basically just a parts supplement with several building ideas. It's meant to foster imagination. Model Team is different- it's basically a City version of the Ultimate Collector's Series.

I think the Model Team sets were much better. They had a lot of details, and working steering.

Looking to Creator, I haven't seen things like an engine, working steering and a lot of details in one model. As far as I know, every car/truck of Model Team had working steering.

These are two different themes, and although Creator is a good theme with some great sets, they are not Model Team or something similar.

I would love to see a strong combination of techinc and model team. Have all the functions of good techinc set, but with the details of model team. Simular to Jennifer Clarks models.

I don't think i agree with that. While creator is great, most sets still don't offer the same level of detail that Model team did. That and Model team is primarly vehicle based while creator fill a wide variety of vehicles, structures, and animals. While this is great on its own, it still doesn't give us that level of detail the the original Model Team sets had.

The 2003 Creator line actually had some nice functions. The 4403 Air Blazers had a fairly sophisticated pumping mechanism to turn the main rotor, as well as retractable landing wheels. It's still my favorite Creator set. The 4404 Land Busters set had suspension, although I don't think there was any steering. We never saw this again later on though.

Nope. No sterring on 4404land busters, but it was quite easy to incorperate into the set without hacking up the model.

Orange light in the back controls the sterring function.

This is one of my all time favorite sets. This is probbly one of the closes sets we've gotten to model team in terms of detail and function since model team was discontinued.

The new Auto Transport has a working steering mechanism and lots of details by the looks of the preliminary pictures, so here we have a set that might compete with 5590.

I'm looking forward to that one!

Good point. I think that will be a good one.

Lots of people are talking about sets that are similar to model team but what I intended by making this thread was to bring back model team as a theme.

Your modifications to that set look quite nice.

Well, Model Team is just a name. I don't really care what the sets are called, if they are just like the old Model Team vehicles otherwise.

I agree, but with a name like model team you get prestige.

On a sidenote I don't see why Lego released the hot rod as a ledgend rarther than a better sets like the 5581 or 5571 which would have made a far lot more money.

I don't think it's just a name. The Model Team theme is very different compared to Creator for example. The sets that where the closest were the Sopwith Camel, the Fokker DR1 and the Wright Flyer, I think.

Let's face it: Model Team as we know it wont return. The design standard has changed a lot with the production of all the smooth, round, and/or <insert that tiresome argument> pieces, so the best thing we can hope for is for TLC to release more sets in the spirit of the 2003 Creator sets and S@H exclusives like the VW Beetle or the big airplanes. Whether this happens under the name of a new Model Team-like theme or not doesn't matter.
