Still no SP3 sets out in Germany (except the Impuls sets) so i spent my money on this jewel of Lego Space:

resize_p1020104.jpg

# Year released: 1986

# Pieces: 413

# Minifigs: 4

(source: Brickset.com)

Let's have a closer look at the box

resize_p1020109.jpg

Some of the alternative models you can build:

resize_p1020113.jpg

resize_p1020115.jpg

some of these look better than some normal sets.

Okay lets switch to the Minifigs:

Here arranged as the German national colors (can easily be switched to Belgian)

resize_m_nnekins.jpg

Classic Space Minifigs in 4 different colors (the 4th is in the next pic). All with Airtanks and helmets.

Back then they hadn't visors. I prefer those old helmets. They look sleeker than the new ones. If they just had visors...

Here is the promised last Minifig sitting on a landrover.

resize_p1020120.jpg

the Landrover is nothing spacial compared to newer versions but it is okay and can also carry another minifig.

(Or more but the Minifigs like having more space for their feets  )

Notice the technic bricks? they are important later in this review.

And here comes the main attraction:

resize_p1020145.jpg

this is the front part of the ship. The cockpit is really big. The pilot can stand to fly the ship. I love these window-thingies

resize_p1020156.jpg

the back part of the ship. With nice little tool boxes. They can be removed and transported with the landrover.

resize_p1020173.jpg

Oh Bob you sloth. :hmpf:

and finally the ship completed :

resize_p1020160.jpg

here a pic with all roofs up so you can play inside of the ship. There is next to no interior inside the ship. Just two computers.

resize_p1020130.jpg

a nice printed Brick. There are no stickers in this set. The good old times...

here the front view:

resize_p1020167.jpg

notice the printed front thingy... wait this ship is so cool, someone tries to steal it!

Overall Rating

Minifig: 9/10 4 Classic-Space Minifigs. Red, White, Yellow and Black combined in one set-

Parts: 9/10 Realy nice Window-parts and other "Classic Space parts". There are also a lot of transyellow bricks/plates.

Playability: 9/10 A nice ship with lots of Space inside. You can seperate the two parts of the ship so you got a base and a ship, that is still airtight.

Design: 9/10 The ship has weapons and engines. So it could shoot down the SP2 ships and fly away from the SP1 ships.(only an example). Also neat color scheme.

Overall: 9/10 In my Opinion a must-have set for Space fans

PS: May a Mod add a vote? Please?

Thank you so much for this awesome review! Here's the really odd thing - I just woke up from a dream in which I told myself I had to buy the box for this set because I wanted to see the Space Chicken (or Dragon) that was depicted as an alternate mode. And then I woke up, logged online, and here was your review with pix of it! Spooky! Yeah, the alternate designs are almost all excellent, very original and ahead of their time. Whoever designed them was thinking outside the box of what Lego was doing at the time. And the actual ship itself it great - I actually have it, but picked it up loose and have long desired to see the box. I like how the buggy looks way too simple, but then you can attach the toolboxes and it makes sense and looks cooler.

Anyway, hope you get SP3 soon!

Meh. Too many Technic parts--the underside is full of holes! Those giant corner pieces are too <insert that tiresome argument>, and the buggy is useless. And they don't even have any visors! How do they survive in space? And some of those big engine and radar pieces sure look flimsy. LEGO sure has gone downhill since the seventies.

Nah, I'm just kidding  (I was born in 1989, so I have seen LEGO improve greatly, and it's always funny to me how many flaws people can find in a set if it isn't built just like a classic, so I thought I'd try a poor attempt at satire. I do, however, love the classics, as well; in fact, my first LEGO set was a classic space one). This is a great set, and a very good review of it. Sure, it has some areas that aren't perfect, but it's a splendid old set. I love the little ground base you can make from the back section of the ship. Very clever. Those alternate models really are great, too; I particularly like the base on the bottom left corner of the second page of alternate models. And that Space Chicken is fantastic

Anyway, thanks for showing off some of the features that I never would have guessed at from the box art. I like it when people review these older sets--there are so many hidden little features. Of course, there are lots of features on today's sets, too--they're just demonstrated all over the advertising.

I just noticed - in that one picture in the middle of the alternate modes - are the astronauts feeding the Space Chicken or looking precariously into its mouth? LOL I love the sense of humor the Lego designers have!

All I know is, I have to figure out how to build that chicken so it can appear in my comic. Thanks again for the pix, Mariko!

RangerBob was the one with the cool photos; I was just the one with the frail attempt at humor :classic:

Oops! Thanks, RangerBob!

Anyway, I just saw that the cheapest you can find this set on Bricklink is for $130! I bought it on Bricklink for I think $50 or $60 maybe a year and a half ago. What the heck happened??? Has there been a run on Classic Space stuff since SP3 came out? Some sets seem to be dwindling in availability and growng greatly in price.

Very good review, congrats  !

I also like this set a lot, I was only three years old when it came out so I never had the chanche to ask it to my parents.

Still, well done and great set!

Nice review! So many alternate models with so few parts - amazing! Why don't they use alternate models anymore on the boxes? Isn't this what lego is all about?

One personal question: How much did you spend on this? (Seems like kind a good condition!)

I'm not a classic space guy, but this set is great. Maybe even better than the most spacesets of this time.

the dragon version idea on the inside of the box is hilarious.

Pity some pieces are not made these days anymore.

@Zzz

I spent 61€ + 5€ shipping for this ship (OVP + 99.99% complete) at eBay.de.

I think it was a fine deal

thanks @all for your nice comments

I actually thought it was MISB because it looks really clean and the box doesn't seem damaged the least! That's a way too lucky deal, I hope you are going to be biten by that chicken.

It's a bit bulky shape for a spaceship, with no wings, but I think it's a very good classic space set. You're review is spot-on.
