Ralph_S Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 In the last few days I've been busy building a new MOC: a minifig scale model of a flying boat (based on the Grumman Mallard). It's the first time in ages that I built a civilian aircraft and I've spent quite a bit of effort on giving it a nice colour scheme. It's a bit chubbier than the real aircraft, in part because I wanted space for the crew inside, but I'm very happy with the result. It has probably the nicest wings I've built in a long time. Anyway, I hope you'll like it too. More pictures on flickr Cheers, Ralph Quote
Siegfried Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 Very nice! I especially love the light blue stripes. Smart use of official decals too! (As much as I love your MOC, considering your past work I was hoping it was a Short C class Empire flying boat... ) Quote
BlueBard Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 Wow, really beautiful plane, RalphS The details are really great and that amazing colour scheme is magnificent Quote
Ezechielle Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 Really nice! You had allready proved you could make huge planes, but this one is, by my opinion, the best. The only problem are the windows of the cockpit which are, I think, to small and definitly don't look like glasses... Quote
Eilif Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 Wow, this is beautiful. This is the kind of thing I had in mind for my seaplane when I eventually just gave up and simplified. You however really made it work! Your colorscheme is really good, especially since it's all brick-built, and I'm always a fan of making modifications in order to fit minifigs. Great job! Quote
Milan Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 I am glad you are building with Lego! I mean without your models, Lego builders would really lack great design techniques! Great plane. Quote
Davey Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 Great work again Ralph! Your aircraft are simply amazing. The Grumman 'flying boat' series of aircraft (Wigeon, Mallard, Albatross, Goose, etc.) are some of my favorite vintage aircraft. You have managed to do a great job capturing the look and feel of the Mallard. Oh...and the retractable landing gear is total win!!! Great work! -Dave Quote
Ralph_S Posted August 17, 2009 Author Posted August 17, 2009 (edited) Very nice! I especially love the light blue stripes. Smart use of official decals too! (As much as I love your MOC, considering your past work I was hoping it was a Short C class Empire flying boat... ) If I would have gone for a classic like that, it would probably have been something military, but I agree that the Empire was a beauty. Using the decal from the Airliner set seemed obvious to me. Bonus points for anybody who can figure out what set the black 'bird' shape on the tail came from. Wow, really beautiful plane, RalphS The details are really great and that amazing colour scheme is magnificent Thanks. I'm happy the colour scheme is being appreciated. It was a big puzzle and the SNOt work needed to continue the line into the tail fin almost drove me nuts. Really nice! You had allready proved you could make huge planes, but this one is, by my opinion, the best. The only problem are the windows of the cockpit which are, I think, to small and definitly don't look like glasses... There's always an issue with LEGO windows. There simply aren't any pieces that seem suitable for something like this, although on second thought, perhaps one of those Racer-X windscreens would have been a good idea if I had one. I disagree that the windows are too small, BTW. A real Grumman Mallard has surprisingly small windows too. Wow, this is beautiful. Your colorscheme is really good, especially since it's all brick-built, and I'm always a fan of making modifications in order to fit minifigs. Great job! Having a minifig scaled model without actual minifigs seems like a missed opportunity, although it does require a few compromises. I am glad you are building with Lego!I mean without your models, Lego builders would really lack great design techniques! Great plane. I'm not really known for pushing the boundaries in terms of build techniques, but I am glad you enjoy my work. Great work again Ralph! Your aircraft are simply amazing. The gear was a fairly difficult bit to get to work, but it turned out better than I could have hoped. I've been a fan of Grumman aircraft ever since I first saw a Tomcat, but some of their classic planes are really neat. I've had a lot of fun watching videos of Grumman Flying boats on youtube whilst searching for info on the Mallard, in particular [a href=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPOJ5yOElMs]a vidoe of a Grumman Albatross in Alaska[/url]. A wonderful plane. Cheers, Ralph Edited August 17, 2009 by Ralph_S Quote
