Holodoc Posted October 2, 2009 Posted October 2, 2009 Hi Folks! Germany is celebrating the 19th anniversary of its Unification Day today. I was in Berlin recently and managed to take some nice pictures. Enjoy: can you spot me? Angela didn Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted October 2, 2009 Posted October 2, 2009 I remember when they took the wall down, i was just a child then, but my parents were all raved up about it. Nice pictures Doc, you almost fooled me with the tusseauds shot. I really need to visit Berlin sometime, it has been on my list for too long and it has a great history. Thanks for sharing! Quote
Holodoc Posted October 3, 2009 Author Posted October 3, 2009 I remember when they took the wall down, i was just a child then, but my parents were all raved up about it. Unbelievable that was 20 years ago on the 9th of november. Time flies. The unification was one year later on third of october. Quote
Zorbas Posted October 3, 2009 Posted October 3, 2009 Great anniversary topic Holodoc. I can still remember those days. Here in Greece it was the #1 topic in all the media. Although being a 10-year old, I was watching all the events before and after the wall fell. I'm a history and politics nutter you see.... Even my favorite album, U2's "Achtung Baby", brings me memories from that era. I was recently reading a series of books about the last 50 years history and events in Europe and the chapter about the Unification, especially the events before thar were thrilling. Have a great celebration day!! Quote
Big Cam Posted October 3, 2009 Posted October 3, 2009 Nice tribute thread, I wish some of the backgrounds weren't so blurred but I suppose your sigfig needs to be in focus. Quote
Wout Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 Happy Birthday! You really tricked me with the photo from Merkel. I had already enough knowing of political things to know It would become a bit better for europe. Quote
Zorbas Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 Have a glorious anniversary our german friends! 20 years after the Wall came down. Time passes quickly. The celebrations have a very big coverage from the greek media. I have watched at least 3 documentaries today about the events back then. Ihr Seid Ein Volk. Quote
Dunjohn Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 (edited) I was eight when it came down, and didn't really get the fuss. However, now I'm a bit of a history buff, and I blame my old history teacher in the mid-nineties for that. I remember once during a class (it may have been about Germany or it may not have been; this guy was seriously energetic), the subject of the Wall came up, he mentioned he'd gone over to Berlin when the Wall was pulled down. Then he stuck his hand into his desk drawer and held up a little zip-lock bag with a small chunk of concrete in it: "Got me a piece of the Wall right here." He was one of those "awesome" teachers. It's all over the news and the papers here, too. Sounds like fun! I also love that Merkel photo, though really, any time I see that Doctor minifig it cracks me up. MetroiD Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 20 years of freedom... A big Hoorah for "dickes B oben an der Spree" - so wunderbar for 20 years... and counting :) Really wish I could have gone back for a few days just to see the celebrations. Funnily enough, I now get that "Ich bin ein Berliner" line - the spirit of that city lives and breathes within everyone who's had the chance to be a part of it. Thanks for those pics Holodoc :) You really did put a smile on my face! Quote
Whittleberry Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 Funnily enough, I now get that "Ich bin ein Berliner" line "I am a jam doughnut" Anyway, happy German Reunification! Quote
Ras 74 Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 Happy anniversery to Europe I would like to say, but especially to our German friends. Quote
Admiral Croissant Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 Happy anniversary to everyone who gives something about it! The wall came down just before I was born so I can't remember anything from it, but on my primary school there was a teacher who married a dutch guy to be able to flee from the DDR. So I did experience something from it. And about 3 years ago I went to East Germany myself, great experience. "...and that's all I have to say about that." Quote
