AllanSmith Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 Last year I wanted to build dodgems (bumper cars) for my Taupo hobby show. With permission from Dave at Bodville I designed my version of his creation. I super glued the magnets to cut technic tractor tread links. I have a large LEGO shop display aquarium which has a chain of links with a few technic tractor tread links in the lid supporting fish on nylon lines. This used cogs and wheels which I copied. One wheel is on a spring to keep tension on the chain when one of the technic tractor tread link passes a wheel. I also used 8 large 8 x 16 plates on a baseplate for the surface. The setup was very reliable and ran for 2 days with no problems. Quote
prateek Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 Wow. That is amazing. I love how you used the magnets to make the cars move. Mind sharing a video? Quote
Milan Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 There is a similar video...and it looks like the real thing! I would like to see the video of this, too! Quote
AllanSmith Posted April 3, 2010 Author Posted April 3, 2010 (edited) You can see my dodgems at about 1:30 into my video. Bodville video below: Edited April 3, 2010 by AllanSmith Quote
lego-maniac Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 oh, Ok, I've understand, you've glued the magnets on the chain ! hmmm.... I'm not conviced by the technic but it works perfectly. I prefer find "real" Lego solutions for my mocs, I think that's here all the interest. You've got a real movement with your chain but no clash with cars... it's a pity for bumber cars no ? My solution is a little bit more complicated but I prefer the final render. Nice Video, there is a lot of things to see on it ! Are they all yours ? a last question : What are this tiles plates where bumber cars are moving ? Quote

Nice Video, there is a lot of things to see on it ! Are they all yours ? a last question : What are this tiles plates where bumber cars are moving ? With 3 cars they do crash into each other (as shown on Bodville video) where the magnets pass close. In my video one has been pushed into a dead spot where the chains go in and out. This happens now and again so I just pick it up and put it back on the path of the chain The show display is all mine, part of my 25 years of collecting, 1000+ sets. The 8 x 16 tile information is found here on Bricklink Quote
lightningtiger Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Excellent 'AllanSmith' - great idea on how to make them move - COOL ! Gluing would be the only easy way of holding those train magnets to the chain too. The cars themselves VERY NICE - I like them ! Great job there 'AllenSmith' and I'm a conformist! ! Quote
guy montag Posted April 5, 2010 Posted April 5, 2010 (edited) This is a very well thought out Moc, so to Bodville and to you for your added improvements. Thanks for sharing especially a few closeups as it will help any of us who are thinking of doing one ourselves. What is the white track marks from the dodgems on the plate floor? is it brick scrapage from the bottom convex pieces or something like talcum powder? Edited April 5, 2010 by guy montag Quote
