underwurlde Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 (edited) I have in the loft somewhere an orignal Technic set, the '956 - Auto Chassis'. I'm going to dig it out & build it with my kids after I've scraped together all the bits and ordered replacement parts for some broken pieces. Relive my childhood memories through my kids kind of thing! Now I seem to remember something about this kit and a google image search reminded me: The instructions clearly shows how to build the 'Auto Chasis' model itself as one would expect. However on the box there were pictures of other models too: There was a Jeep, a Dragster, a Lathe, a Scissor Lift and a Truck Cab. Now I don't think that there was any actual instructions to build these additional models - much (if memory recalls) to my frustration at the time - all be it over 27 years ago now! So, question time: Do instructions actually exist for these extra models, or was one expected to figure them out??? If plans do exist, does anyone know where can I get hold of them please! Kind regards & thanks in advance, Andy + Sprogs. Edited April 6, 2010 by underwurlde Quote
JunkstyleGio Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 There were only instructions available of the chassis and a buggy! This one... I got a PDF of the instruction (complete with partslist!) if you want one! Just pm me! Quote

Blakbird Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 There were only instructions available of the chassis and a buggy! Where did you get those alternate instructions? They are not part of my original kit. Quote
DLuders Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 From the Peeron.com webpage http://www.peeron.com/inv/sets/956-1?showpic=6674 , the back of the Set #956 box shows the chassis, buggy, and the alternate models: Quote
underwurlde Posted April 6, 2010 Author Posted April 6, 2010 The lid of the set: Here you can see the jeep and the scissor lift Another source: Here you can see all the models I've mentioned above. Intreaguing, no? Andy Where did you get those alternate instructions? They are not part of my original kit. Heh, nor mine. Infact I've now got two sets of instructions for this kit. One without the buggy and one with (thanks JunkstyleGio) Andy Quote
Jetro Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 (edited) The buggy instructions are also available at brickfactory http://www.brickfactory.info/ No other instructions though. Usually what was displayed on the back of the box were mainly 'inspirational models'. BTW, curiously the number on Brickfactory is 853 and 856 is the bulldozer: Edited April 7, 2010 by Jetro Quote
JunkstyleGio Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 @ Underwurlde: Mail is on its way! The 956 was a set number that was only available in the US. It IS the same as the 853.. Quote
DLuders Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 @ Underwurlde: To better appreciate the 956/853 set, be sure to see Blakbird's Technicopedia review at http://www.ericalbrecht.com/technic/853.html . Quote
paul_delahaye Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 loving the lathe, thats a really unusual suggestion for an alternative model Quote
underwurlde Posted April 9, 2010 Author Posted April 9, 2010 Yay! Figured it out from extended plans. The rear axle config & attachement thereof to the engine had to be guessed though because the plans stopped short of this? Engine Cheers, Andy Quote
Tropy Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 From the Peeron.com webpage http://www.peeron.com/inv/sets/956-1?showpic=6674 , the back of the Set Can't dig out my sets now from the storage, but I clearly remember a sort of addition somewhere of the instructions where there were some models that you could have made out of 2 sets, such ex. 853 +852 and in this regard i remember a sort of trolley... By the way, Brick factory was having an awesome FTP server, where you could download the scans in few minutes rather than opening page by page. Does anybody knows where is it gone? FTP folder does not open anymore... Quote

Yes, each of the old "expert builder" sets came with an "idea book" wrapped around the instructions that had photos of other ideas, often combining the parts from multiple sets. I built one of them, a body for the chassis, by using the parts from the helicopter: One of my favorite "alternates" of this model is the mini version done by Arvo. I very much want to duplicate this, but I have no experience in micro building and have not been able to fully figure it out from the photos. Quote

Kind regards & thanks in advance, Andy + Sprogs. I remember as a kid I spent endless hours trying to build the Jeep. And I also remember thinking: if just 1 drawing is enough to build a Jeep, then 0 drawings should be enough too! Building MOC's seems obvious in retrospect but at the time it was an eye opener and really sparked my interest in spending long hours designing a car, building it, playing only 10 minutes with it and taking it apart to design a better one. Anyways, thanks for bringing up memories of the best Xmas gift ever! Quote

Paul Boratko Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 Wow... I can still remember building that buggy... Eric, I could have swore that set came with the instructions for the Buggy... It almost had to of, because I built it when I was like 4 years old and I know it was a long time ago, but I don't recall having to reverse engineer it from the box art... So many memories... And Arvo's 5 Mini Supercars are amazingly well done... Quote
Edwin Korstanje Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 I loved to see the old sets Quote
SheepEater Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 (edited) Mine came with instructions for the buggy, as well If anyone ever makes instructions for the Jeep, you'll be a hero. Edited September 27, 2012 by SheepEater Quote

Sweet I have 8 of them, LOL. I wonder how well they hold on the rims though. Dan LOl, this is funny. Reminds me of when I rode my bike to TRU and bought the VW chassie when I was about 12 years old. I had the box up untill about 2 years ago, using it for storage didnt do it much good I,m afraid. I have the bull dozer, the small crane and the farm tractor still in my collection. The things we hold dear to our hearts :) !! Dan Quote
WhiteFang Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 This set is awesome. Made it about a week ago. Awesome indeed, how about sharing more why you think this set is considerably awesome, especially how you gone about doing it since this is a recent experience that you had done in just a week ago, so it is actually good to share your experience by providing more inputs since you had actually experienced it and this will be very much helpful to others who are interested in this set and this past discussion. Thank you. Quote
Bricksonwheels Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 (edited) Ooh i love the 956... i got it as a kid when it was just released.. i think i was around 11 then. My parents could barely afford it, but I guess they knew that I would like the stuff I don't have the whole set anymore, as my sister took some Lego as well when we moved out, but I still have the wheels, and they are truly mounted under one of my old trucks (yes, one before the chrome era) Edited September 28, 2012 by Bricksonwheels Quote
