Mine is 8448 - Supercar II, but that is mainly due to personal resons. I wanted it for years and it was first of "classic" sets which I bought after my dark ages and my first E-bay purchase.

If I dont count that than I guess it would be 8455, waiting to be surpassed by 8043 soon.

8868, 8480, 8880 in equal first, best of all time.

8258 in second

8448, 8466, 8421 in equal third

8094, 8865, 8459 in equal fourth

8275 in fifth (but only for introducing those tracks and PF system, without those this would be last!)

This years 8043 is almost at the bottom of the list for me.

In no particular order (and not including the "true classics" as they're mentioned everywhere already:

8448 Supercar II (the wing door version). On par with 8880 because of better suspension, modular design and cool doors.

8460 Mobile Crane. This has been a long time favorite of mine. Lots of functionality, all working great.

8528 Crane Truck. Wonderful techniques, looks great, impressive size.

8265 Front Loader. Looks great and lots of functionality in relatively small space.

8865 Test Car. Much functionality considering part count and set age (I don't even own this set, but I once borrowed the instructions from a cousin).

1 place - 8043 Best set for all times!
This years 8043 is almost at the bottom of the list for me.

It's funny how people can think so differently... I for example found 8285 Tow Truck relatively uninteresting :)

8880, 8480, 8485, 8868, 8479. These are my top 5 sets, but it's hard to pick a favourite.

8855 and 8862 are great as well. 8440 looks good, maybe the best TECHNIC race car set made, but the stickers are annoying. The best recent set is 8275 in my opinion.

I loved the functions of the 8880 set, but it had to be one of the ugliest models released from TLC. The 8448 set was very enjoyable to build and seemed to be the turning point in supercar building. It is easily my favorite set.

The 8865 is imo by far the ugliest technic supercar ever. :tongue:

Giving an alltime favorite is so hard.

You have to take so many variables into consideration,(30+ years of development, 200+ models, cuteness of models, and so on... ),

so making that list is impossible for me.

It's a tough call. I think I'd probably go for 8855, mainly because of the nostalgia associated with it. It was by far the biggest Lego set I ever had as a kid and was very mechanically interesting too.

My top 3 technic sets are:

8285

8868

8297

8421 deserves a mention as well, it's such a good looking set, and big, but unfortunatly

the pneumatics are a bit underpowered for the weight of the crane...

Well aside from the classics (8880, 8868, 8480, et al.) I'd have to go with 8858 - Rebel Wrecker:

8858b.jpg

It's packed with functions for it's size, looks awesome and the front suspension is full of win.

Right now, I'd have to say 8480 Space Shuttle since it's sitting on my desk so I can play with it frequently. Love the gearbox to control all the functions.

Other favorites are 8455 Backhoe with so much pneumatic functionality.

Also have to say I love the 8297 off-roader. I know it's not as popular around here, but it was the set that got me out of my dark ages and into technic. Now I have around $3000 in technic sets on my shelves. So maybe I should hate the 8297? :)

In the days of the 8865 it WAS called a (super)Testcar....

It was an all technical "marvel" of LEGO!

You know, I was unaware of that......interesting. Well for a supercar it's hideous :laugh: still freaking awesome for it's time though.

Ok, for anyone interested the tally of people stating a set as being their number one set(s) so far is:

8868 = 5

8480 = 4

8880 and 8448 = 3

8855 = 1

8297 = 1

8485 = 1

8479 = 1

8043 = 1

8460 = 1

8258 = 1

8265 = 1

8865 = 1

8285 = 1

My favorites are 8868, 8455 and 8480. These sets were just about perfectly designed. 8455 had a staggering number of pneumatic parts and functions for an official set. 8480 and 8868 also had some of the best alternate models seen in Technic.

I always thought 8448 was underwhelming as a successor 8880 (the later 8466 was everything it should have been), but interestingly I think the general opinion on it has changed over time. I recall that most people on Lugnet had the same thoughts as me when 8448 came out, but today it seems to be well liked by many people.

I don't own many flagship sets, but my favorites are the 8455 Backhoe and, of course, 8880. Of course, the Robotics Invention System has no rivals (except NXT, which I don't own), if you count that as Technic.

I have thought this many times, but I can't decide.

8421, the Mobile Crane (1800 pieces) could be first.

Second place the 8461, the Williams F1 Racer.

And third place for 8480, the Space Shuttle and 8258, the Crane Truck.

The last two represent two different eras of Technic desing and build.

The 8480 was way ahead of its time and 8258 sets the standards for "next generation"

Technic sets.

8043

But it is really hard to pick a favorite - I love them all - all the Technic sets - they are each unique in their own way - Now if you ask which set you are least impressed with I would clearly have to say the 8295 Telescopic handler is a kit that could have been so much better. The steering is simply wrong and not functional - the cockpit seat is out of scale, I was really unimpressed over all. My son is building the B model - hopefully that turns out Better. I am simply going to create my own telescopic handler one of these days.

#1 8043 is my favorite. So far I've only built the B model (I'm waiting on lego's service pack before building the main model).

#2 8868

#3 855 (nostalgia makes me rank sets from that time period very highly, like 853, 851, 8860).

I don't think I have one technic set over 100 pieces, but 8868 is still my favorite technic set.

What is your favorite technic set?

nobody really mentioned the great:

8858 AUTO ENGINE (or 858 engine)

Maybe because of it's rarity not too many people had the opportunity to put their hands on, but i can assure you, it was and it is a great set. This is really my favorite.

I guess 80% of technic enthusiast are full on on engines and stuff...so this is THE set.

I loved the test car 8865. Fantastic set when I was little

I also really like the super car, RIS 2.0 (still at technic set if you think about it) and 8285 for the sheer size of it. Air claw is also a good set. Bulldozer, arr poo so many. that's why I collect technic!

I have a 8858, good set, and a 858 is on ebay for sale now!

After giving this question some thought (there are so many great sets) I decided that the 8043 Motorized excavator is my favorite set of all cause it's the set I played with most by far. It was a lot of fun to build and made it easy to make an upgraded version, giving it full simultanious controll of all functions.

Other sets that scored high were: 8285 Tow Truck, 8258 Crane-Truck, 8421 Crane.

Of course it's difficult to compare the sets you have with the ones you don't have and have never built. Of the sets I don't have the 8868 and the 8480 get highest score.

Among the usual favorites from years ago (8880, 8868, 8480), the 8868 is the cheapest to buy. I've seen quite a few 8868's sold on eBay below $100 (I bought one after reading Blakbird's technicopedia). Motorized pneumatics, with 4 pneumatic functions (turning, lifting arm, bending arm, and grabbing) which can be operated simultaneously. The sound that the motor/compressor makes is pretty neat too.
