badboytje88 Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 (edited) Hello there. My entry for the Winter Break contest will be Number 12 Grimmauld place. History: Sirius and Regulus Black grew up in number twelve, Grimmauld Place with their parents. After their death Sirius inherited the house. Since he was imprisoned in Azkaban, Kreacher the house elve lived there alone for quite some years. After Sirius'escape, and him proving his innocence, it was used by the Order of the Phoenix as headquarters. Following Sirius'death, Harry Potter inherited the house. After the rise of Voldemort Harry, Ron and Hermione stayed in the house for several weeks during summer and fall. After one of the death eaters finding out about the location of their hideout they had to abandon Grimmauld Place. It is unknown what happened to the place after Voldemorts' fall. When a wizard approaches number twelve, Grimmauld Place who knows of its location, it appears to shove its neighboring houses, number eleven and number thirteen, out of the way as it appears between them. What's revealed is a worn set of front steps, leading to a battered front door. When one leaves the house, the building vanishes behind him the instant he reaches the street. Reference picture #12 Is hidden between #11 and #13. Once the secret keeper arrives, the house reveals itself to those who have been told about it's location. After they enter the house vanishes again. Here you see the inside of the mansion complete with Buckbeak, Serius, Kreacher and the screaming painting of Serius' mother. That's all. Please leave a comment or critic. Edited January 22, 2011 by badboytje88 Quote
Masked Builder Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Those look great! I really like what you've done around the windows. It gives them a great sense of depth. I'll be sure to check back to see the finished project. Quote
badboytje88 Posted December 31, 2010 Author Posted December 31, 2010 Thanks for the comment Masked Builder. I'll just edit the first post every time I make an update. Then I'll just bump the topic. Comments and Critics are most welcome and appreciated. Quote
Alibabo Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 It looks really amazing, the angled wall is good idea Mine entry is allready done, but I want to work on it... I wait for getting some nice ideas If I were you I would build it from reddish brown , but I shouldn't tell it for you Happy new year, and good bricking all year Quote
XimenaPaulina Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 Looks good badboytje88, but I think the wall colors should be a bit darker, maybe dark bley would look better. And don't forget the window railings/fences thingy. Looking forward for the completion of this one. Quote
badboytje88 Posted January 2, 2011 Author Posted January 2, 2011 Thanks you guys. I thought about using dark blueish grey. And I agree that it would look better, but I don't have enough hinge bricks in that color. So it was either a more accurate color of the playability thanks to the hinges. I decided to go for the playability. I also don't think I'll be able to add the window railing because the wall has to be flat to be folded together.Otherwise I would have added some more details to the walls but in this case that wasn't possible. Quote
Ceroknight Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 that looks really good! I think if you add balconies it will make it spectacular! Quote
Alibabo Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 Hingle plates? I prefer them, and they are easy to find everywhere. Maybe it would look better if you use some 1x2 plate for decorate the wall (it will look like small bricks, but you know it well, not?) Quote
Sandy Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 This is actually a very neat idea! I can't wait to see how you'll do the folding action in the finished product. Quote
badboytje88 Posted January 4, 2011 Author Posted January 4, 2011 I've thought about adding some structure to the wall, but that would mean that I can't fold the walls. The walls have to be flat... Which also means I won't be able to add a balcony. I will change some of the grey to dark grey. Hope that helps a little bit. Quote
badboytje88 Posted January 7, 2011 Author Posted January 7, 2011 Just added an update to the first post. Thanks for the comments and suggestions guys. I try to use them as much as possible. I hope the last pic explains why I can't ad structure to the wall. Quote
Yatkuu Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 Great idea and an ambitious project! I like how you have incorporated a play feature in your creation - very much in the HP/Lego spirit! I'm afraid the brick count limit is going to be an issue for you at some point considering that you are not making 1 house but 3... anyway it's a really good job already! ... I wonder how you are going to manage the roof! Quote
badboytje88 Posted January 7, 2011 Author Posted January 7, 2011 We are allowed to use 1000 bricks right. I think (hope) I'll manage. Thanks for your comment. Plus I've made another update! Quote
Matn Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 It looks really great so far with the dark grey parts. I like it and I bet it turns out beautiful. I think I have an idea for how to do those balconies, I'll try to work it out myself, take some pictures and I'll send it to you if you are interested (kind of hard to explain with words )? Quote

Maegnus Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 Lovin the progress pics. It's really starting to come alive and show a lot of promise. Keep it up! Quote
badboytje88 Posted January 8, 2011 Author Posted January 8, 2011 Thanks for the comments guys and update update update Quote
Gregorovich Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 (edited) It looks wonderful so far. The wall detailing and the wooden floor make it seem realistic. I am a little annoyed that you are taking so long on it, as I just can't wait to see it finished! Good luck with the contest! Edited January 8, 2011 by Gregorovich Quote
badboytje88 Posted January 10, 2011 Author Posted January 10, 2011 Thanks for the compliment. And sorry it's taking so long. I've been very busy lately. Quote
badboytje88 Posted January 21, 2011 Author Posted January 21, 2011 (edited) BUMP I just finished my MOC. Now I need to go and read the rules if I missed something. Although it looks like a simple build, I actually found it one of the hardest things to do. I wanted to add as much as possible playability to this set. Which made it impossible to add some architectural details. I still think I managed to recreate the original house pretty good. The house is designed to be posed in 3 ways. It can be hidden, it can reveal itself and the walls of the other two houses can be folded to the sides to create a house with 3 walls and an interior complete with Buckbeak, Serius, Kreacher and the screaming painting of Serius' mother. Comments and critics are more than welcome. Edited January 21, 2011 by badboytje88 Quote
Clone OPatra Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 Nice to see your finished MOC now. BY the way, Sirius is spelled with an i, not an e. There is one major thing that I do not understand about your MOC: When the houses fold up, do you take off both the roof and the interior of Number 12? Since that is what it looks like. I enjoy the folding up function, and it's well done, but it's considerably odd if you have to take off the interior to do so. The other thing that is a little strange in my mind is that the facades of the other two houses side by side become the side walls of Number 12. The other aspect of the MOC that is a little odd is the way you've left the interior as one huge room. I like all of the details on the floor, but it would be much better with some sort of second story. Of course it does not have to match the film building in any way, but having that cavernous room just doesn't look too good. I would also now get rid of you WIP shots, so people can get right to the entry when they open up the thread. Please don't take my comments and criticisms the wrong way. My only intent is to be helpful and honestly tell you what I think. Quote

My only intent is to be helpful and honestly tell you what I think. In order to fold the house, you need to remove part of the roof and take out the interior (which is a separate build, so it's not hard to do). I realize that the side walls are a little bit off. It's not even possible to have windows on the sides of the house because the other two houses are attached to #12 on the side walls. I just liked the closed building better than just a facade. I would have loved to add a second story but I couldn't make attachment points to the wall. If I would have made those, the house wouldn't be able to fold up. Plus my photography isn't that great so the second story would cast a huge shadow on the first story. The things you mention are the things I personally dislike about this build to. But I couldn't find another way to make it work. Thanks for your comment and critics. I appreciate it a lot! Quote
Gregorovich Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 I am stunned! It looks absolutely fantastic! I am amazed at how you made no.12 fold into the other two, and the minifig stands as a roof was genius. Thanks for sharing, well done, and good luck! Quote
muscleman Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 great compliments, a really great work here! Quote
JimBee Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 Very cool! That play feature is awesome, is there any possibility that you could take a short video to illustrate it? I also like how the inside looks shabby, like in the books. Nice use of those brown grill pieces. Quote
