Solscud007 Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 (edited) I have seen posts and examples of people triming the parts off the dome of R2D2 and adding them to the body. I took the grey circle, from a rotating plate, trimmed the pegs off the body and drilled a small hole in the neck. The rotating circle plate pops right in. I also had to trim the legs as the circle plate peg protrudes a little into the leg posts. I prefer this method since im using the newer grey R2 head. Ideally i would like to countersink the plate into the body. but Im worried it wont turn out perfectly flat. Edited January 5, 2011 by Solscud007 Quote
Bobskink Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 This is very cool and a good idea. Is it poissible to insert the rotating part more inside R2 D2, so there isn't any space between his head and body? Anyway, good work. Quote

You would need to carve out a negative cavity so the rotating plate can sink into the body. i was worried I would screw it up and the sinked hole would either not be straight and centered or it would not be flat and level with the top of the body. Darth Yogi Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Very nice job on this to make it more accurate, it looks very nice although, I don't really like the gap. Great job Quote
prateek Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Good idea! What sized hole did you have to drill? Quote
XimenaPaulina Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Very ingenious idea Solscud! With your 'discovery' of this rotating head customization, astromechs will be even more accurate, especially when coupled with the additional third leg. Do you mind if I use the same technique? (It really looks good ). Great job! Quote

(It really looks good ). Great job! Yeah no problem. I would really recommend that you DO NOT try to sink the spin plate. There is so little room that you risk damaging to the point of ruining it. Just live with the gap. Oh yeah and the hole should be about the same size if not a little bit smaller than the hole in the square base for the spinning plate. KingDom Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 I tried to do this earlier on but it is pretty darn impossible without the right tools. I think I'll hold off canibalising my precious Artoo bodies (I only have 2 blue and a red) for a while. Quote
CommanderFox Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Excellent idea Solscud007! I'll definitely be trying this sometime! CF Quote
punkkid364 Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 Sorry to dig up a dead topic, but I really like this mod, and was wondering about the stability of the chopped-up legs. Are they more loose than the unmodified one? Quote
