This is great!

New theme for the Technic Challenges:

Take the Technic Challenge - Build Your Dream Supercar!

This is the LEGO® Technic Challenge competition! - here you have a chance at showing the LEGO Technic designers your designs and your abilities with the Technic elements.

The competition is very simple

1. Build a model out of primarily LEGO Technic elements.

2. Take a picture of the model

3. Press the button below to Enter the competition

4. Enter your contact information

5. Upload your image

What to build?

This month (April) the competition focuses on dreaming up a supercar.

Build your idea of the COOLEST supercar imaginable!

How does it work?

Right now you can submit models - On the 19th of April - a panel of judges consisting of designers, marketing managers, building instruction artists and more will pick out (of all submissions) 10 finalists that will then be put up for voting here on the site. Considerations for the Nominees will be based on Model, Design, build to theme and age.

The winner will receive a prize and also continue to the Big Finale in October

LET'S GET IT ON!

I'm still in deep water with my supercar :cry_sad: ...

And then I'm using a number of 'outdated' pieces like previous differential and a lot of studded beams... no, I think judges will not accept my MOC :hmpf_bad: !

Yes, that is what I am talking about, or just modded versions of other builder's cars.

It does not have to be a MODERN Supercar, necessarily. What about these cars from the past that were "way ahead of their time"?

Or, it can be some one-of-a-kind DREAM CAR, like these:

To me "supercar" in the context of LEGO just means any large scale car with a significant number of working features. Usually this includes suspension and some form of gearbox. Beyond that, I think the choice of subject matter is subjective.

Technic cars means that in order to look good they need lots of panels and curving hoses ( bricks will make it not technic )

I cant really think of a car that will look good without the usage of panels and flex tubes .. (dont have any) so i guess i will skip this challenge

BTW: Cant wait for the TRUCK challenge

I must argue that 8880 (no panels or hoses, just clever design) is probably one of the best looking technic sets ever and the car that looks most like a supercar.

To me a supercar is exactly that, a supercar. It's not a musclecar or concept car or saloon car of offroader, it's a supercar (or hypercar I suppose). I don't consider the 8865, 8458, 8466, or 8297 to be supercars. 8448 to me is only a supercar when it has it's gull wing doors and even then it looks like it's from the 80's. 8880 is the only modern supercar TLG ever released. Sure 8865, 8466 and 8448 are super, and they are cars, but they are not supercars by definition IMHO.

@ Ddluders: THE Challenge: building a scaled Citroen DS (19 or 21, it doesn't matter) with pneumatic system for the suspensions  .

But very very very humble... IMO  .

Sorry for the somewhat dumb/insecure question, but is there some sort of semi-official definition of "Super Car" or a list of Technic Sets that are considered "Super Cars" other than those specifically labeled as such (8880, 8070)?

I recently got back into Lego after a long time and bought my first Lego set since my childhood about four months ago. Since then I've been worming myself through the current Technic catalog at a pace of about a set every three weeks or so. Since I got some extra cash, and getting into the taste after reading some building instructions I got off Lego.com, I wanted to buy the 8070 Super Car. Instead I bought the 8297 Off Roader because I saw it in the store and knew it was an older model and thus I'd have less opportunity to pick it up if I wanted too while the 8070 Super Car should stay in stores for a while since it was only recently released. They were also for the same prize.

From reading its construction manual a few weeks ago, I also knew that the Off Roader had features that are usually typical of a Super Car, in particular the suspension. However, I'm not quite sure if it is actually considered a Super Car itself due to the fact that the sets that are usually labeled Super Cars are usually sports cars.

Thanks for answering if you take the time. I don't think I'll be entering the contest though since I'm probably not at that stage yet. The set itself is however very, very nice and I'm quite happy with it. It should also provide some basis for future Super Cars I may or may not build once I'm at the level, and it was a good change for once since I had been more or less tripping out on construction vehicles (8043 Excavator, 8053 Mobile Crane, 8069 Backhoe Loader).

According to Blakbirds technicopedia, this is the list of all supercars/auto chassis:

http://www.ericalbrecht.com/technic/cars.html

you can also add the 8070.

Technicopedia is invaluble if you want to find out more about any particular set (so far with increadible detail up until 1995). Have a good look round.

Now you might have gathered that I think only one or maybe two sets qualify as being called supercars as such, but that's just me. As far as I know there is no clear definition of what constitutes a technic supercar. For me a technic supercar is a technic set of a supercar. However the term has also been used to describe all flagship cars regaurdless of whether or not they are high end sports cars or otherwise including SUVs, muscle cars and F1 racers.

IMH(*)O the two Ferrari are not Supercars in the traditional Technic sense of the word.

* very very humble :tongue:

I do agree with that...

Lego sometimes uses words to describe their sets that are sometimes a little strange. Like "Extreme Cruiser" I think the original "Supercar" from 1994 was titled that because of the many functions and features that it had. And many Lego enthusiasts had been begging for another "Supercar" for years , and that was what they got. A car that took a somewhat different approach than the previous "Supercar", but was still an awesome model and featured many new features that had never previously been seen in a Technic model...

I personally would consider the 8466 Offroader a "Supercar" ever though it is well... an offroader, because it did have some really great functions. All Wheel Drive, 5 speed tranny, full suspension, a working steering wheel as well as HOG, and really cool doors/fold down steps. I haven't built the set myself, but I have seen the built model in person and it definitely is a great set to purchase(If you have the cash or are lucky to score one cheap) if you are starting out building with Technic...

But like someone said before, there have only been 2 sets by Lego that are actually called, "Supercars"

Yes, there seems to be two different meanings to the word supercar which I guess both is correct. The first is a technic set of a supercar, the second is a super technic set of any kind of car. I would love a super technic set of a super car, a supersupercar
