AussieJimbo Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 (edited) I'll have to wait a while before I pick up an official copy of this magnificent new set but in the mean time I've managed to scrape together all the pieces to do a faithful build of the loco in a nice yellow and white livery. I've fitted it with dual PF motors and I have to say I'm thrilled with the results. It's an excellent loco with great pulling power and traction. The online instructions from Lego made it all possible. Thanks Lego for this fantastic resource. http://cache.lego.co...ons/4632677.pdf http://cache.lego.co...ons/4632672.pdf Also invaluable was the bricklink inventory: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemInv.asp?S=10219-1 I started looking through it a few days ago and found I had a good shot at doing the build with available pieces. My buying of multiples in the last couple of years has paid dividends with various pieces, eg. turntable bases from railway crossing hi-rails for fan bases on the top of the loco, yellow 1x2 cheese slopes from the same set and the Octan Tanker set, long flex tube lengths from extra Emerald Night sets. Other parts I had to shop for. I bought 4 x Atlantis Ocean Speeders and 2 x Clone Trooper battle packs to get the 18 droid arms I needed for the hand rails and the Space Police ship 5974 for the four 3x3 Technic discs for the fans. All in all I've barely had to compromise the design and have made more changes to accomodate the PF switch (to change 2nd motor direction) than due to parts limitations. Anyway, after many hours work I've now got a great new loco, the new pride of my goods locomotive fleet. Large Large Large Large Large Edited April 3, 2011 by AussieJimbo Quote
pinioncorp Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Looks great, kind of needs some shell stickers. Quote
Legoist Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 (edited) I don't like the white part of it very much (oddly white is my least fav Lego colour), but the general idea is cool! I was thinking myself of building this loco in alternative colours. My plan would be drawing it in MLCAD and then try many different colour schemes before deciding which one to build, and then go hunting for parts. edit: I had almost suggested you to switch the white for black, and now I just found a picture of a real locomotive of this type that matches. What do you think? :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Union_Pacific_5304.jpg Edited April 3, 2011 by Legoist Quote
Ayato Zechs Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Awesome, I see that I'm no the only one who dual-motored the locomotive. I even see that you and I put the reverse switch in the same place. Very nice. I'm going to make a Norfolk Southern version as soon as I can get the cash to order the pieces off of Bricklink. Great job! Quote
LEGO Train 12 Volts Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 WOW! I love so much this MOC and its Shell colors! Great rolling stocks by the way Quote
Fuzzylegobricks Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Shell! This is something I knew was going to happen with this set ( A alternate colored). Great. Quote
brenden perkins Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Very nicely done, I like it a lot. It reminds me of the CIC railroad in Iowa. Their colors look like Union Pacific's but use whte instead of "harbor mist gray". Very nice build, sir. Quote
lightningtiger Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 AWESOME 'AJ', totally Shell....you now need some tankers with Shell logos on them ! I too downloaded the plans the other day, so I'll check my parts selection and see if I can build my own. (still want the genuine 10219 though) ) Brick On 'AJ' ! Quote
AussieJimbo Posted April 4, 2011 Author Posted April 4, 2011 (edited) Thanks everyone for your kind comments. The "Shell" colours just evolved. I started out simply replacing the maersk blue with yellow and doing everything else in the stock colours but it wasn't really gelling with the yellow side panels I had to use. I also had white windows instead of grey so decided to continue white along the top but I felt it needed a separator between the white and the yellow, red looked good so that was the scheme. I won't put Shell logos on it because then the question is "why is it pulling a container train?". Awesome, I see that I'm no the only one who dual-motored the locomotive. I even see that you and I put the reverse switch in the same place. Very nice. I'm going to make a Norfolk Southern version as soon as I can get the cash to order the pieces off of Bricklink. Great job! I'd been meaning to try dual motors in my existing locos for a while and it just seemed natural to try it with this loco. I can't recommend it highly enough. I've been double heading trains for a while but struggling with traction on my current twisty, undulating layout. This loco is a powerhouse and performs much better on it's own than two of the 7939 locos in tandem. It's pulling a nice 12 car train (6 container wagons, 3 car transporters and 3 tanker wagons) at the moment with no dramas at all. It also drives nicely at low speed, though my slight grades mean I have to run it a little faster. I look forward to seeing your Norfolk Southern version. The more variations the better. (still want the genuine 10219 though) Cheers mate. I'm still super keen for the genuine article too but I'm so stoked with my copy I'm happy to wait for now. I hope you can find the bits to make one too, it's worth the effort. :classic: WOW! I love so much this MOC and its Shell colors! Great rolling stocks by the way I'm glad you like it. The container carriers are basically just extended version of the ones from 7939. I've got some other similar ones without the special triangular gird pieces. I think someone else posted some similar designs a bit earlier but I can't recall who it was. :classic: Edited April 5, 2011 by AussieJimbo Quote
pinioncorp Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 ... I won't put Shell logos on it because then the question is "why is it pulling a container train?" ... Just give it some Shell style tankers instead. Nowhere on the model does it say that it needs to haul containers. It will give your Maersk train more to pull (when it arrives). I also double motor all my locos, it really does wonders, better than the sum of two motors alone. But I think that might be because the brick built bogies do not roll that well, expecially around curves; Instead of having to push that bogie, it is actually helping out. Quote
LEGO Guy Bri Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 Great MODs 'AussieJimbo' The engine looks spot on and the colors are Great. The extension of the 7939's cars look much better. Definitely an all around great train. If only you had some stickers Quote
broomhandle Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 i agree with the white windows. you need grey to make a proper UP GP38 Quote
Capt. Stabbin Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 Nice job, Jimbo! I really looks nice. I personally like your color scheme and if fits nice with this model. I bet it looks nice going past your train station. Keep up the good work. Quote

Only the loco that you put in front of a very long train needs to have 2 motors. For a short train, it does not help to have a 2nd motor. Quote

Yeah it looks nice alongside the station but I'm feeling the need for a cargo handling facility. Some cranes, somewhere to stack containers and transfer them to trucks, a warehouse and perhaps some industrial activity. Maybe a fuel depot and railway maintenance buildings can go in this area too. :classic: Edited April 6, 2011 by AussieJimbo Quote
