r1chard Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 (edited) Hello Guys, This is my very first review here in Eurobricks. Enjoy! As they say, a nice car takes you to places! Number: 30091 Name: Desert Rover Theme: Pharaoh's Quest Year released: 2011 Pieces: 34 Minifig: 1 Notes: Promotional set given away with The Sun newspaper in the UK on 20th May 2011 Links: Brickset Bricklink Packaging Nothing special on the packaging. No shiny gold bar or gold coins , typical polybag set. At the back it says 'Components made in Denmark, Hungary, Mexico, and the Czech Republic. Pieces The above photo shows the (folded) instruction sheet, pieces for the Desert Rover vehicle, and two pistols. Instruction The instruction is a small piece of paper printed on both sides. The front page shows steps 1-6, while the back page shows steps 7-9, and the rest of Lego Pharaoh's Quest sets. At the upper right-hand corner of the back page is a watermark of a mummy holding a snake. The Mini-figure Here is Jake Raines. I call him 'The Gunslinger'. Details of the minifig showing front, back, and side. One issue I have with this minifig is how to place the hair piece so that it works with his sideburns. The Desert Rover For me the best piece of this set is the front detail of desert rover. It reminds me of the fire truck in Fire Brigade, and Indy's car in Shanghai Chase. The above photo shows the front and side of the rover, and the extra pieces. Back side of the rover. I like the rear wheel cover. Completed Set Lego Pharaoh's Quest 30091 Desert Rover Conclusion Design 8/10 - The design is good. I'd say it worked for it's purpose. Let's keep our expectation low for promotional polybags. It blends well with the rest Pharaoh's Quest sets. Parts 8/10 - As mentioned above, I like some pieces, in particular the Car Grille. Which according to peeron.com doesn't appear much on sets. Build 8/10 - Simple build as expected on polybag sets. Minifigs 8/10 - I like the Jake Raines minifig, the same guy appears in Scarab Attack. I like the facial expression, printed torso (front and back), and the sideburns. Playability 8/10 - As you will see in the bonus image below, Jake uses his vehicle to his advantage. Price - I will not give a rating for the price. But if you're interested, I got 2 of this set from eBay UK for GBP 1.79 each and another set 30131 (GBP 3.50) plus GBP 4 shipping for all three sets. So it's good better to have a British friend . Overall I like the Desert Rover in this set, and all the vehicles on Lego Pharaoh's Quest sets. The same goes for the minifig. It's a polybag set, so really there's not much to expect, other than it gives a taste of the Pharaoh's Quest theme. For that purpose I think this is a good set (I just bought 2 eh ). If you're going to compare the rover to other polybag vehicles, it's not that bad. Bonus Image Love at first sight. Edited June 5, 2011 by r1chard Quote
lightningtiger Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 Interesting little set, how and where did you come across it ? Keep on chasing mummies ! Quote
Fuzzylegobricks Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 Cute! It reminds me of those little cars that you get for toddlers. They should of done more effort in this. Quote
Brig. Brick Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 thanks for share this pictures! I like this touch Quote
r1chard Posted June 1, 2011 Author Posted June 1, 2011 Interesting little set, how and where did you come across it ? Keep on chasing mummies ! This impulse set was released in UK as a promo (free) for a newspaper. I bought it from an eBay UK seller together with another impulse set Jack Sparrow's Boat. I guess the reason why TLG didn't put more effort into this set is basically it's just a promo set, nothing really special, just a taste of the Pharaoh Quest theme. I thought I'd write a review of this set here but there's really not much to say.. except that the front design of the rover reminds me of the firetruck from the Fire Brigade set. Quote
