Sokratesz Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 caveat: I do not own any PF trains myself However, I have seen a lot of MOCs using the technology, some extremely pretty. I have also seen people complain about the lack of speed regulation on these trains, because apparently they run either very fast or not at all (is that correct?). If so, has anyone attempted to make a mechanical or motorized gearbox for use in the PF trains? Using f/ex a 9v micromotor or a simple spring/weight assembly it should be possible to make a 2- or even 3-stage gearbox that allows for more realistic speed control. - Sok. Quote
Sokratesz Posted June 12, 2011 Author Posted June 12, 2011 I made a mockup real quick: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5dfEvgyn34 and http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/274268 Should fit inside a loc :) Quote
mrblue Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 clever and compact solution! but... PF train remote control already has a speed regulator which increase the speed by steps (not variable), so I don't see the point of adding more speeds. or maybe I am missing something... have a nice lego day mrBlue Quote
Sokratesz Posted June 12, 2011 Author Posted June 12, 2011 Well, I don't know how they work exactly but I saw people complain about a lack of speed control on other forums, something about how PF trains run bad at low speeds or something :) Quote
greenmtvince Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 I think it might be that they're confusing them with the old RC train motors which were low torque high RPM. The new PF train motor has performance characteristics comparable to the 9V train motor. Quote

How often do people use M or XL motors for trains though? I've seen quite a few MOC's with them. One would think that adding a gearbox like this would allow for more realistic movement, especially of heavy trains :) Edited June 12, 2011 by Sokratesz Quote
Pingles Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 Would the gear setup in the Emerald night be appropriate? I was very impressed by the setup and it works great motorized. Quote

Pingles Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Page 4 or 5 of the pdf I think starts it. http://cache.lego.com/bigdownloads/buildinginstructions/4611661.pdf Quote

I'm actually tempted to buy one and try it, but they are 90 bucks over here and my budget is limited. Maybe next month :) Edited June 13, 2011 by Sokratesz Quote
