Sokratesz Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 I've seen the new turntable today at Legoworld Zwolle (unfortunately someone else had already bought it) and I can confirm that the center hole is square, such that a studless beam, axle, pneumatic or LA head or up to 4 pneumatic hoses can pass through. - Sok. Jim Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 (edited) I want this part really bad! This will prove to be a most useful mammal Edited October 19, 2011 by Gekke Ted Quote
efferman Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 sweet, perfect for small pneumatic knuckleboom cranes. Quote

timslegos Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 Wow this part is going to be awesome!!! I cant wait to get one! It will be perfect for attachments and small turntables. When will the set be in stores? tim Quote
efferman Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 i think the tracked crane will be released at end of December or at the beginning of january Quote
Anio Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 Nice turntable. :) It is a useful part, and its design is pretty common (not too specialized). Contrary to many part in 8110. The quality make me think to Megabloks, though. Quote
CP5670 Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 This is arguably the best new Technic piece we have gotten in a long time. It opens up lots of possibilities. The square shape for the hole is an interesting choice, and not what I think most of us expected. It would still be useful for putting a rotating axle through, maybe using these to hold the axle in place. The quality make me think to Megabloks, though. If it's like the larger turntable, I know what you mean. The plastic feels lighter and less shiny than the ABS on the old studded turntables. Quote
Anio Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 The plastic feels lighter and less shiny than the ABS on the old studded turntables. True. But actually, I was especially thinking to that : Quote
davidmull Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 Why is this turntable so important to people? Quote
dhc6twinotter Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 Oh wow! This part is awesome! The square hole in the middle is unexpected, but I like it. It gives room for a couple of pneumatic hoses. This part would be perfect on the two mocs I'm working on. Davidmull, this part could have a lot of uses. It could be used at the end of a boom for a rotating hook or claw, used as wheel hubs in large mocs, used as pivot points for pendular axles, etc. Very useful, imo. Quote
timslegos Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 Why is this turntable so important to people? There ae sooooooo many new possibilities with this. Before if you needed a turntabel you only had one size, even if that size is way to big for what you are trying to make. Its like having small pnuematic cylinders instead of big ones. tim Quote

Frequency Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 one problem with the linear actuator - wouldn't the rotation of the turntable moving whatever the end of the actuator is fixed to cause the actuator itself to wind in and out, this would only be with a very large amount of rotations though please forgive me, I'm terrible at spotting the negatives in things Quote

And like you said, it will only be a problem for a higher number of rotations. Putting the turntable at the end of a boom which only needs to rotate 360 degrees max it won't be a problem. It can also be a problem with axles going through the turntable. In an NXT solution, you might be able to compensate for this, by turning the motor which drives the LA when the boom is turning (or something like that). Quote

Or using a ridicilously complicated mechanical solution using differentials ;) I see the guys at technicbricks stole my description, but they even managed to take a picture :D - Sok. Zerobricks Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 Great little part! I wonder if you can use it as a wheel bearing! Quote
Erik Leppen Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 The possibility of fitting an LA through the turntable is awesome! Yes! At first I thought, why square, because if you rotate, the square holes will not line up, which would nullify their effect. However now it's of course clear - the LA head won't fit through a round hole. Finally, a part that has been thought through :) Why is this turntable so important to people? It's a much stronger rotating connection than just an axle, and it's much more compact than the large turntable. It's ideal for strong rotating connections in smaller spaces. I foresee this being used a lot in walkers.By the way it can even be used on trial trucks as a wheel bearing/hub part. Fix one side to the frame, the other side to the axle, and use the 28t gear to drive the wheel. In essence, it makes the 8110 wheel hub part obsolete - already Quote
