Long time follower of eurobricks so I thought it was finally time to step up and join.

I've been a long time 9v fanatic, but was only able to afford my hobby in the early 2000's.

Anyways! Apart from my layout overpowering my basement I was curious about the old 9v motors and the new PF ones.

I've searched the forums but was unable to track down if you can remove an old internal 9v motor, and replace it and possibly the gears with a new PF one.

Theoretically you could since they both run 9v... but I don't know if the gears and motors are interchangeable. I was hoping they are since I have a few old 9v motors in need of... a new motor.

Has anyone tested this? Thanks for all your help!

Why would you want to do that? You can just replace the entire motor plus housing with a PF one, they are really cheap.

No, you can't just replace it because there won't be any IR controller or battery to drive the PF motor. The OP want to keep 9V operation so it's a perfectly sensible question.

Apart from the problems of actually fitting the PF motor in the 9V shell and the electrical connecions, I think the PF motor is designed to work with PWM so may not perform well with variable voltage.

Hi, i've actually tried this and it can be possible with a bit of modification.. The gears are exactly the same as the 9V so can be interchanged, also the motor is the same dimensions as the 9v but... the electrical contacts are in a different postion so they would need to be modified.. plus the diameter of where the motor sits into the plastic is slightly larger on the PF motor.. so the plastic would need to be cut back on the 9V plastic a little.

The manufacturer is Hai Po Motors in China but i think the Lego motor must be a special order as there are no twin gear motors listed on their site, but they do have similar sized DC motors listed that are single gear.

I was thinking of using the PF as a way of replacing old burnt out 9V motors, and as the gearing is the same there is a possibility that these newer motors have slightly more power than the ones in the 9V motors.

Anyone tried running PF motor on 9v track my making a contact. I have plugged a pf motor into a 9v motor as a way of adding a second motor to a 9v setup and that has worked fine.

I'm pretty sure I've heard of people running some kind of pickup from the 9V track to a PF train motor.

As far as running a PF motor off a train motor (using the pf extension cables) you can do it, but just watch how much load you put on the pf motor. I have done this in the past and had issues with the pf motor on longer tracks. Just recently have converted the PF stuff to run off a battery box.

I'm not looking to convert 9v to PF, just was curious if the motor and gears can be used as long term replacements for the 9v system without going to a third party replacement. I just don't want to tear apart one of my precious 9v motors and render it inoperable if I can't replace parts.
