Now a new one. It was lightningtiger (many thanks!) who suggested to use the wheelbase of the supercars and minivans to create a muscle car, and so I did. Since I had some black parts left I decided to design my first police car. I must say that I am quite satisfied with this one because some issues I had at the beginning seem to be solved. Of course, it is big in terms of minifig scale cars, but not that big, it is very low (in order not to "dwarf" the figs too much), two figs fit in there (even with hats or caps), they can easily be put in and out, there are mirrors, there are opening doors, and there are - the most important thing - police lights behind the grille The whole thing is heavy as hell, but very stable.

Your cars are just a tad too big and wide for my taste. That said, I'm not one to ignore how you're doing a really good design job within the scale you've created for yourself. Your cars have a very nice aggressive touch to them - for example the front of the police car. Menacing!

EROL, can you share the building instructions for these beauties? Or at least just the parts list? I'd love to have the cop cars on display chasing my Punisher's battle van!

So I got antsy and made this in LDD, here's the result.

-Made some mods to the interior, not sure how you had it. I added a 1x2 tile in the middle of the dashboard that can be a screen or dials and buttons. Changed the seat design too.

-Modified the inverted slopes in back (used cheese wedges and 2-studded brick instead)

-Got rid of the 2x4 black plate holding the roof, replaced it with a more compact rail plate.

This thing was such a pain to make, I now admire 7-wide car builders even more now haha.

Let me know if I did something wrong, there were some things that had to be fudged:

1) There is juuuuuuust enough space to fit the minifigs comfortably upright in the car, even with some headgear, but the roof will be slightly ajar. And I mean like a millimeter or two so it won't even be noticeable, you can totally fudge it. I love this car, thanks for sharing EROL!

2) The rear is very unstable, the only thing connecting it to the car is the trunk's cover and a tile inside. I think I messed up here.

3) It's not possible to attach the black curved slopes in back the way I built it, you need to fudge it again and force the slope behind the wheel well.

At least I added trunk space.

Normally I would share the LDD file but since this isn't my original design I won't be doing it for this model.

WOW!!! I am deeply impressed by this. Never saw a design of me like this because I am not acquainted with LDD at all. You did an absolutely stunning job!

You quite nailed it but I think the baseplate may be one level too high. Is that possible? It is situated just one level below the mudguards. Anyway, I will shoot some more detailed photos tomorrow (today there is no time) so that you can modify the file, if necessary. I very much like your modifications, too!

I think you're right, I might need to lower the base in the middle, then the figures would fit perfectly.

Thank you very much, I would love to see more pictures, possibly even some with the car partially disassembled? I'm not very experienced building vehicles like this so I'm learning many things from your models.

Thank you very much L@go, appreciated as always. Glad you like the design. The following photo shows the dimensions quite well, I think. The driver sits lower in the 7 wide than in the 4 wide - it can't be lowered any more. Of course 7 wide means that there is a certain length to keep the proportions well balanced. But since the stock 4 wide in my eyes is quite lengthy in comparison to its width, you still don't get the impression that these are totally different universes of scale - although you wouldn't put both in the same setting, I think. At least one thing can still be done: omitting the mudguards to get a "real" 7 wide, so that hopefully the wheelbase can be shortened. Something to work on

As I already said I am very impressed by this. This photo hopefully shows what is still missing:

The wheelbase is as simple as a 12 x 4 and a 12 x 1 plate. The most important detail is the strong beam (at least 2 levels) in the middle (quite an advantage of a 7 wide) who stabilizes the whole thing. Thus you don't need a strengthening at the sides, the doors can move freely, there is nothing under them. Furthermore you need quite a pile of jumper plates to switch between 6 and 7 wide parts of the car, of course.

Normally I would share the LDD file but since this isn't my original design I won't be doing it for this model.

Of course I would like you to share it - not with me, but with everyone who likes it. But that is your own decision. Hopefully the combination of your renders and the photo helps - or at least inspires others to build 7 wides. If there are questions left they can be discussed with Flickr - in order not to expand this thread too much with details.

I absolutely love that police car. I've tried 7-wide before but I can never manage to complete it. I always get stuck and wind up needing the pieces for other projects. I would very much like to see the LDD file for this. A 7-wide would look out of place in my town, but I'd love to have one on my shelf next to my F430 Spider.

This is just too big in comparison to everything else, but if one should build cars without thinking about the town they'd have to fit in, the scale and dimensions are just about right, and the cars are all very well-designed. My only issue with larger minifig scale cars, other than that they look too big in a traditional town, is that they dwarf the minifig. Sure you can fit two side by side, but they look silly standing next to it. That's one of the reasons I prefer 4-wides, they look more to scale with their drivers.

But that's not to take away from these creations. My passion is cars before Lego, and I love what can be accomplished stylisticly in 5+ wides that I could never do with my 4-wides.

Hi there,

some new rides in the showroom which I would like to present to you:

#5: Muscle Car - Rallye Version

I wanted to test the variability of the Muscle Car design, so there are some variations, more are about to come. There are some modifications concerning doors (1 level higher), mirrors (had to be changed because of the different doors) and the rear end (now suitable for LDD). There are door sills now to make the car look sportier.

#6: Muscle Car - Convertible

This is more or less the cop car minus its roof with some modest modifications.

1000steine user Dirk1313 has made an LDD file of this one (roadster.lxf, with some modifications), he then ordered two of them in a race version with Design By Me (cabrio2.lxf, still available) and had much fun with his sons building them - which gives me much pleasure! Here you see the result - they look very nice and shiny IMHO (Photo: Dirk1313). Too bad that Design By Me is about to stop.

#7: Corvette

Same wheelbase, different ride: a classic. The frame has been improved, so that there is more room left inside the MOC. As a result you can open the trunk, too. Honestly spoken building this one was quite a pain in the a**. You must accept that there are some compromises to meet in this scale, and it took several days to get something you didn't want to throw out of the window at once. But when a friend of mine saw it (still very colourful, no doors etc.) and spontaneously said "Oh, a Corvette!" I knew that I was on the right track. For sure there will be some chrome parts with this one and hopefully some more colorful versions.

Great job on the Vette. The front end is instantly recognizable as a C3 Corvette, though the rear says Ferrari to me, like a 328 or 288 or something. Speaking of which, a 288 GTO wouldn't be hard to produce in Lego form. hmm...

Thanks a lot L@go! I am very glad you recognize a progress. Glad you like the Vette, too! I must say I like making original designs very much because you can work with the pieces in their own right more than with something existing. But I will try to build a favorite classic car every now and then, simply because I love them and it teaches you much about proportions - or color design, which is something I must improve
