Interesting, well I have no money for now so that is useless, but thanks for sharing what you think are the most useful books.

You might try something called a LIBRARY. :-)

This book is available at my local public library and in my kids school library. The author is fairly popular and so many libraries have his books.

A library is a very good place to look for a book, but it also depends on the library. Libraries in smaller towns won't be as large as those in the bigger cities and therefore obivously won't have as many books to choose from.

Just to clarify exactly which book were you referring to Tedbeard? "Incredible Cross Sections: Man of War" by stephen biesty?

May I also recommend you this book? It is a very helpful book, I often use it when I'm building a ship...

Whoops, sorry. Yes I am. He also has a Castle version which is a lot of fun.

Even the smallest public libraries usually have his books becasue they are so popular with kids. Most public libraries also take suggestions on what books to purchase. Just ask the librarian. *sweet*

thank you legopirate83 to yous guys that replied here. I've been searching like crazy for the best books to buy for reference on ships. The library in town here doesn't have ANY books on sailing ships and i can request a book but i would never know which ones to request. Also the book stores near by have next to nothing dealing with the topic. These are exactly the type of books i wanted to buy for myself and buy my brother for christmas(a fellow lego pirate fanatic). X-D

I've gotten my brother the three books shown below. I read most of these three and skimmed through all of them to see if they're worth giving my brother for Christmas. I just wanted to give my 2 cents worth about these books.

I like this one. It's focused heavily on the British though. Though it does cover around 1780 to 1815 or so, and the British had the largest navy during that time. This one is my second favorite of the three. Spent $9.24 (including shipping) I'd recomend purchasing this one. Since my brother has this one, I'll probably be puchasing Patrick O'Brians Navy. Since they're related some how.

This one I think is ok. Does contain some details about ships that aren't covered in the other two books. Definetely worth the $8 bucks to get it. It's my third favorite of the the three. It seemed too short and could have easily been more thorough. If you want to try to learn every historical fact on sailing ships like me, then i'd recomend getting this one.

I like this one a lot. Gives lots of pictures of different vessels of each sailing era and gives lots of overview on some of the more famous ships. This one has the most pages of the three books so it's oviously the most thorough. Spent $11.49 (including shipping) This book discusses all ships from the first dug-out canoes to modern aircraft carriers. Definetely recommend purchasing this one.

BTW: i didn't make this post till after Chrstmas cause my brother also reads this forum (but he's not a member yet).

Would it be easier for those contributing to this thread if it were moved to The Great Library?

The great library has a similar thread? if it does then let them be merged!

If you want to make a new thread on the Great Library, then I'd say aye. Move this thread to the Library.

Edit:

No, the Great Library has no such thread but this particular thread probably belongs there now its established.

This year I plan on doing more with the Great Library but I think I'm going to have to enlist a librarian.

Wow that was fast!
