Set number: 7658

Set Name: Y-Wing Fighter

Price: $39.99

Number of pieces: 454

First of all, let me say that I started off hating this set, but I've grown to love this as my favorite 2007 Star Wars set so far. This set is the pinnacle in Lego greebled goodness.

First, here's the box:

Not much to really say about that. Note it's a 30th anniversary set.

Here's the Y-Wing from the front (note the two up front lasers):

From Above (note all the greebles! It's even more impressive in person):

img_0363.jpg

It's a decent sized ship that feels slow and armored.

Here's the rotating ion cannon turret, built via a simple mechanism:

Here's where the astromech goes, same as in the previous versions of the Y-wing and X-wing:

Look at all the greebs! They work very nicely:

Side greebs stuck on via a very simple mechanism:

Here's where you can load the bombs:

The bottom of the fighter, with the place the bombs fall out. Kept on by a very simple mechanism:

With the bomb bay open:

Here's the back pin:

img_0371.jpg

My original problem was that the door opened sometimes while swooshing. But then I realized that it was part of the mechanism. The bombs only open on their own when the ship is being pulled "up", which is natural for when a bombing occurs.

Here are the engines:

Cockpit:

Look, the pilot sits on white tiles for some reason:

Pilot with new gun mold:

Here is the parts list:

The front of the wing attachment pylon, where the two proton torpedoes shoot out from:

And the back, where you use your finger to flick the missile out. It's a stupid idea that really doesn't send it that far (although it can go a decent amount). They stay in the socket under most conditions, but during swooshing they might fall out on their own.

Overall, the ideas work nicely, and it's a huge improvement over the older model. It works on many levels, and looks very real. My favorite of the 2007 sets so far. Make sure to pick one of these up!

I think the white tile seat is so that when you try to take the pilot out his legs won't stick to the studs and he won't get pulled in half. ;-)

I would buy one, if it weren't so damn expensive! |-/ *n*

it's a nice ship. too bad the missiles and the bombs' mechanism sucks. they are much better off without them. i will have to use technic bolts to fasten the pins in place. as for the tile seat, why cant they leave 2 studs for the butt? the butt usually doesnt stick very strongly to the studs so it is easy to remove the minifig. it's just silly for the minifig to float around.

i'll have to get the ucs version too. :-P

Nice review, great set!

I agree that it's the best SW set in 2007 so far, although the Mfpacks are just very useful and clones are always great *wub*

Many tks for those great pics Starwars4J ;-)

I totally LOVE this ship *wub* Its really a thing of beauty !! However there is one detail that is soo frustrating: the way the atsromech is placed >:-(

Unlike all the versions of the X-Wings and the previous Y-Wing where the Astromech was properly placed, this version is so stupid and wrong double >:-( Those idiots at TLC didn't even manage to fit in the astromech properly ?? WTF is that ?? What do you expect from a 4 studs wide "mid section" :-| The previous version was 6-wide !! Oh well, I won't mod it not to screw the proportions (no I'm not lazy :-P ).

Apart from that its really so sweet !!

BTW SW4J, do you have the old Y-Wing to have a look atr both babies side by side (for size/proportions comparison) ? Many Tks in advance ;-)

Great review as usual but i have to ask is the bottom of the Y-Wing dirty???

If so i guess thats why it was placed on what looks like kitchen tissue towel :-P ;-) X-D

Good review, very nice set. But.... not airtight? sceptic.gif

Afraid not, due to the nature of the windshield :-/

I'm driving home tonight, so I can take comparison pics for you.

No, it's not dirty. I used two pieces of computer paper to add contrast against my couch :-P It's a pretty large fighter, so I couldn't take the pictures in the way I normally do. My couch, however, is brown, which wouldn't show it off too well. ;-)

As for the "landing gear", I think that the 1x3 inverted slope on the front is supposed to be the landing gear. Did the original Y-Wing have landing gear? I forget. Also, if I forgot anything in the review, please just ask and I'll try to cover it. I took the pictures at like 2 AM and was exhausted :-P

I keep getting an "error 500" when I try to reply to 4J's post!

Landing gear: yes the original did have landing gear, three of these pieces

They don't look particularly good, but they do the job

But it works fine with the X-Wing.... Well, should be easy to fix. Cool front part design, anyway.
