Posted January 13, 200718 yr LATEST PRODUCTION PHOTO: Production News: Sculpting continues on Davy Jones. Sides and front of hat completed, still need to detail back and top as well as sculpt the octosack on his neck. Half of his claw done, completed claw will be able to swivel like a normal minifig hand and hold stuff. Both legs are now completed. History: I have decided to make and upkeep this thread in order to keep tabs on my latest project and my first serious sculpting endeavor: Making lego versions of Davy Jones and his crew. I will update this threads production photos and news whenever I have something new to put up. I have all the supplies and materials to make molds and cast replicas, so, sometime in the next month or two, I will be able to put at least this here Davy Jones figure up for sale. January 13, 200718 yr That's very nice and a definate improvement over the original. Do I see some barnicles or are they his syphons?
January 13, 200718 yr That's awesome... I asume you are gonna paint it?? And what about the hat? Will you make one yourself or will you just use a lego tricorn hat?
January 13, 200718 yr Author I'll probably wait and paint one of the reproductions, and leave this one as the origional "greenie". As for the hat, if you look closely in the movie, Jones doesnt actually wear a tricorn. He wears something more along the lines of a bicorn, if you will. So, i'll be sculpting that, as well :)
January 15, 200718 yr Governor How come you're leaving him as a "greenie" when the actual character wasn't?
January 15, 200718 yr Author Because I want to leave the origional sculpt alone T_T Plus, its difficult to use the molding stuff on painted objects!
January 15, 200718 yr Governor Fair enough that you want a unique creation. But why is it green? Is that the default colour putty or did you only have green available to you?
January 15, 200718 yr Fair enough that you want a unique creation. But why is it green? Is that the default colour putty or did you only have green available to you? I used to have some experience with warhammer thingies, and I believe the putty is only available in green....
January 15, 200718 yr Governor Is there any particular reason for that? Wouldn't a nuetral colour like white or light grey be more logical?
January 15, 200718 yr Author Meh, possibly, but its called "Green Stuff" for a reason :P Its professional modeling apoxy/putty. It comes in two parts, a yellow putty and a blue hardener. Mix em together and... green!
January 15, 200718 yr Governor Is "Green Stuff" the official name this putty is marketed under or were you just being a wise guy?
January 15, 200718 yr Author While its marketed as simply "Modeling Putty", its called "Green Stuff" by the Games Workshop staff and the ENTIRE Games Workshop community. Anyway, I got his hat basically sculpted. Ill finish it off tonight and take pictures.
January 16, 200718 yr Governor I'm unfamiliar with the nomenclature of the Games Workshop Community hence why I was seeking clarification. I couldn't tell if you were being serious because it appears you've used the :P "mouth with tongue poking out" text smiley which often represents joviality. So what happens if you don't like green? Is it easily painted over?
January 16, 200718 yr Author Yes, it is, but I still wouldnt paint it over even if I didnt intend on casting it. The two reasons I wont paint THIS Davy Jones are thus: In the molding process I use, the object to be molded is pinned up in the air in a wooden box. The mold-making substance is poured in halfway up to a suitable place. This is allowed to harden. Then, mold-release stuff is coated on the surface of what has been put in so far, and more mold poured. Once this dries, the box is dissasembled and the two halves of mold peel apart. Then, two slats are cut in these - side by side- one to pour the actual casting plastic in and the other to let air out. Thus, once the origionals are removed, the two halves of mold are strapped together again and mold plastic is poured in and allowed to harden. Once this is done, you simply peel the mold back apart again and voila! Perfect replica. However, this process can get somewhat messy if paint is applied to the object being molded, because this can get stuck on the mold stuff or cause other badnasty side effects. Secondly, this Davy Jones would not only be the first thing i've molded with intent to sell but also the second thing i've done any SERIOUS sculpting on. I would like to keep it origional for memorys sake.
January 16, 200718 yr Governor Yes, a completely understand about keeping something for memory's sake. When I create something (not necessarily for LEGO purposes) I like to keep and document any test versions or versions that came out horribly wrong. It can be often a good way of keep a record of not way to do, so you can focus on improving on the right thing to do. Well I find anyway... Is there any particular reason you've chosen "Green Stuff" as opposed to something like Sculpey which Mr Ghoulrealm is using to achieve a similar outcome?
January 16, 200718 yr Is there any particular reason you've chosen "Green Stuff" as opposed to something like Sculpey which Mr Ghoulrealm is using to achieve a similar outcome? I think he choose Green Stuff because it's more durable. It basicly turns into plastic when it's dries. Here's a link with some information about it *y* .
January 16, 200718 yr Author @Phes: Scupley is clay. This is modeling putty. Not only is it more durable to the point of almost complete indestructability, *Drops Davy Jones from a height of two feet onto his computer desk, watches nothing break (Yes, I did just do that)* it is formulated to be used on fine models. Thus the sheer level of detail that can be attained is far above anything anyone - even a really good sculpey user like Ghoulrealm - can attain with clay. As an example, here is some of the work of a guy named Scibor - he is a master sculpter and earns his entire living sculpting and selling custom miniatures. http://www.coolminiornot.com/artist/Scibor @Tiber: Hmm... depends on how I mold him. If I can put all 6 of his peices on one big sprue, then I would'nt want to separate them, and would probably be selling Davy for 10-12 bucks. But if I have to mold each peice individually, I can probably get one to you for two or three dollars :)
January 16, 200718 yr Governor *Drops Davy Jones from a height of two feet onto his computer desk, watches nothing break (Yes, I did just do that)* X-D Do you suppose you could film that and put it on YouTube.com so we all can see? X-D @Tiber: Hmm... depends on how I mold him. If I can put all 6 of his peices on one big sprue, then I would'nt want to separate them, and would probably be selling Davy for 10-12 bucks. But if I have to mold each peice individually, I can probably get one to you for two or three dollars :) Do you intend to mass produce these and sell them on eBay in the future?
January 17, 200718 yr Author @Phes: Yes. @All: A picture of our mutual friend, Jack Sparrow, with the Devil himself: Check the first post in this thread for a more complete image of Jones. For Phes: Here is a picture of the Green Stuff before its green: For Zcerberus: Here is the headlamp, which I also used for lighting on all my Davy Jones pics! Good thinking!
January 17, 200718 yr Wow! Davy looks friggin awesome *y* ! Are you going to mass produce his legs and arms too? I can't wait to see the final result. Keep it up!!
January 17, 200718 yr Author If I can figure out how to cast them, yes, I indended on casting his legs and hands too :)
January 17, 200718 yr Cool. If I have the money to do so, I might consider to buy one. It's just that cool :) .
January 17, 200718 yr Author I was thinking of charging a flat rate of 10-15 bucks + shipping, mostly to cover the time and effort of casting, painting, and clear coating it :)
January 17, 200718 yr The hat looks very good, but it looks a bit too high (IMO). But why don't you put it on another body? This looks kinda weird...
