simonwillems Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 Hi there, Seeing Mr. Bonaparte so busy with the fabulous looking Land-based MOC gallery, I realised that I had another MOC in my brickshelf folder that would fit in perfectly: this city I made some time ago. It was my first pirate layout MOC, and I made it long before I moved to Amsterdam (perhaps some wishful thinking at the time). Maybe some of you have seen it already on brickshelf as it is up now for quite some time. The entire city is raised by six bricks in height to allow boats to pass under the bridges, it took up all my grey bricks, harbour plates (really they are in the walls as well!) and most black bricks. To support the green baseplates on top of the grey bricks I made use of some raised baseplates, like the one from the Chinese temple from the Orient Expedition. The houses have no interior, except for the square "fortress" in the middle, but I had some great fun constructing the typical housefronts and roofs. I'll be happy to answer any questions, so fire away. These thumbnails are links to the pictures, and the gallery can be seen by clicking here Quote
El Bucanero Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 I was already wondering why this wasn't on EB yet. The buildings are really typicly Amsterdam. I like the white bridge in particular. The fortress in the middle is also very nice. You are a talented man Mr Willems! Quote
pietje Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 nice moc *y* , the buldings looks good, only the colour isn't amsterdam The colours looks the buldings in Paramaribo(Suriname) Quote

I did'nt have so many bricks in the same color at the time (still haven't actually 8-| ) so I put it all together and made houses in various colors.... Quote
Capn Frank Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 Looks great simon, I like the un-modified (or barely modified) Eldorado Fortress on the bottom right. The buildings look very very nice. Dunno about the color of them, but oh well it's lego. Lego bricks are colorful. good job *y* Phred Quote
Minifig Lecturer Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 and the coffee shops are where exactly... :-D This is a great moc indeed, I love the bridge and the barge with hay/wood. Nice style on your buildings! the flower petal over the door is an interesting design. Nice integration of fort Sabre too. *y* Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted January 25, 2007 Governor Posted January 25, 2007 What a vibrant and colourful port you've created Mr Willems! Do you still have Amsterdam build or has it long since been disassembled? Quote
Eurobricks Emperor Bonaparte Posted January 25, 2007 Eurobricks Emperor Posted January 25, 2007 That's a real masterpiece Simon! Very inspiring for me because I have plans to build a city/fortress/port myself. I have added it to the "Index: Land based MOCs". Quote
El Bucanero Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 Mr Willems, may I ask why there are anchors and ship's wheels in the fort? (picture is link) Quote
simonwillems Posted January 26, 2007 Author Posted January 26, 2007 Do you still have Amsterdam build or has it long since been disassembled? Amsterdam is long gone, after this project I built my city layout with monorail and that city has also been dissassembled after I had it built up for a year..... Mr Willems, may I ask why there are anchors and ship's wheels in the fort? The fort was meant to be some sort of fortified navy supply-building, like the building that houses the Maritime Museum these days in the real city was (picture). So that explains the wheels and anchors, I have lots of spare wheels and anchors from the Divers series so "no ships were harmed during the building of this MOC" *sweet* Quote

A little colorful, but at least all the colors went well together for each building. I am also glad to see you have mastered the thumbnail link! Hooray! Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted January 26, 2007 Governor Posted January 26, 2007 I have added it to the "Index: Land based MOCs". Excellent work old chap! Heh- well it looked nice while it lasted! A little colorful, but at least all the colors went well together for each building. I am also glad to see you have mastered the thumbnail link! Hooray! Now I've seen the above picture I'm wondering what Amsterdam would look in more subtle colours, closer to those in the picture. And no, that's not a hint to rebuild it. Quote

Governor Mister Phes Posted January 27, 2007 Governor Posted January 27, 2007 I've also been wondering who these two fellows are: Quote
simonwillems Posted January 27, 2007 Author Posted January 27, 2007 I've also been wondering who these two fellows are: They represent no one in particular, I just wanted to show what one can do with a combination of starwars, iceplanet and pirate lego.... Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted March 14, 2007 Governor Posted March 14, 2007 Yes I noticed the Ice Planet 2000 mini-figure head, I even think I have one - somewhere! Still, you could always create characters from them since you went to all the trouble of designing them. They look like they're very important figures! Quote

Well, the face in the picture you posted isn't a ice planet face, so why did you post it? But you are right, they can be very useful. I accidently bought a ice planet female face on the pirate wench figure... The long red hair and earrings look very piratey. Mr Tiber Quote
Eurobricks Emperor Bonaparte Posted March 14, 2007 Eurobricks Emperor Posted March 14, 2007 Good to see this MOC under discussion again! Why? Well, it has been (and still is) a great inspiration for me. Mainly because of this MOC I decided to make a Lego city (situated in the Napoleons time). And I will be doing a "city-trip" to Amsterdam somewhere in the course of this year to have a look at the architecture and get some idea's. The new Cafe's Corner would fit in very well, don't you think? Quote

The new Cafe's Corner would fit in very well, don't you think? I was also surprised to see it between the recently-posted-in threads again! It was great to make this city and to find out that the things you do automatically in a real-time city (like placing roadsigns, laying out roadplates and using certain windows in houses) had to be reconsiderd because of the time the city is placed in. You should visit Amsterdam, it is (in my opinion) the most beautiful city there is.... *y* The new Cafe Corner set has a 1910-1920 feel about it, so for an MOC of a city of the golden age I wouldn't use it. In other Neighbourhoods here in Amsterdam (Oud Zuid or Oud West for the insiders) it will fit wonderful, I come across this sort of houses everyday. Those neighbourhoods are from the 1910-1920 period and also really beautiful. The centre of Amsterdam (like I tried to build) has houses from between 1550 and 1800 B.C. those are the tall canalhouses everybody knows. Quote

I like that set a lot, but if I can't find a way to make in fit in, then I'm not sure if I will buy it. Do you think it is possible to modify the cafe corner (a bit) to make it fit in a city between 1800-1830 or would this be impossible in your opinion? Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted March 14, 2007 Governor Posted March 14, 2007 Well, the face in the picture you posted isn't a ice planet face, so why did you post it? Actually I've completely forgotten. Truth be I just bumped the thread by copying my last post, then pasting it and deleting the orignal. I think I must have the wrong image there. Quote

I think with some alterations you can certainly make this house look like it was built between 1800-1830. First: remove the white and yellow things above the windows (of course!) and next I would change the windows on the first floor to bigger ones, putting two of the attic windows on top of each other to create one large one would be good, I think. I also think it would look nice to add some facades on each side of the corner "tower" I searched for some pictures of buildings of that time period and found this one (it's a shame to see what humanity did to it, putting all those commercial signs on the roof....) Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted March 14, 2007 Governor Posted March 14, 2007 Ahhhhh bless commercialism and capitalism... Then industrialism for those unsightly tram wires... Then urbanism for all the bitumen surrounding it... Quote
