Locomotive Annie Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 This little loco has taken quite a while to get built as I tried out different ways to end up with a loco that looked like a geared logging tramway lokey. It wasn't entirely uncommon for a local engineering works to be presented with a pile of second hand steam loco parts and requested to build a logging locomotive and this is what I was aiming for with Kotanga Tramway's new No:4. If anything she does look a bit more tidy than most of her breed, but then the Kotanga Tramway is supposed to be a working preservation line and I suppose No:4 must've been prettied up a bit during her rebuild and restoration. The mech on which No:4 is built is an early type I 12volt one fitted with clip-in type pickups and sliding bogie blocks. Yes I know it's a cheat to connect the piston rods to one of the driving wheels if this is supposed to be a geared loco, but that was the best I could come up with for the moment. The red wheels are going to be replaced with black ones as soon as my latest Bricklink order gets here btw. And I'm also waiting for my order of new traction tyres to get here too. This morning a Bricklink order arrived that had been somehow delayed in some far off European postal limbo. It had taken so long to get to me I could barely remember what I'd ordered, but one of the items in the order was a type II 12volt mech...... http://www.bricklink...tem.asp?P=x550b ......and I think I will be able to use it to give No:4 the appearance of having a proper countershaft drive afterall. I'm not very up on electronics so I was wondering if any forum member might know of a handy little circuit that would enable me to fit a red led in the firebox to give No:4 a nice firebox glow. More pictures of No:4 soon once I change over the mech. Quote
jonwil Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 What parts are you using for the door, the front radar dish, the holder for the hook at the rear and the red things which the steam driving rods attach to? Also, what parts are you using for the minifig torso on the one guy? And what is that black track piece from? Quote
Locomotive Annie Posted February 25, 2013 Author Posted February 25, 2013 (Deep breath) The black track is by Banbao and is semi-compatible with Lego track, I have a fair bit of it and I was using it as a display track for a while. The track has now been replaced with Lego RC track with 12volt contact rails clipped to the sleepers. The 'radar dish' is an Enlighten part from their train series and is one clone part I'm very happy to use because it just looks so good. This is the part I used to mount the hook.....http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=3730 The red crankpin and counterweight assembly is this part..... http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=x564 The door is an Enlighten part from their train series. The closest Lego equivalent would be .......... http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=30074 The torso is found on 'Conductor Charlie' http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?M=trn075 I have quite a few Conductor Charlies, but I do change their heads so they don't look like an invasion of the clones. jonwil Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 I dont know if its your photo or what but the torso looks like its light blue rather than the dark blue of the Conductor Charlie torso. Quote
alainneke Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 I'm not very up on electronics so I was wondering if any forum member might know of a handy little circuit that would enable me to fit a red led in the firebox to give No:4 a nice firebox glow. Something like this? Firebox LED for LEGO 12V motor by alainneke, on Flickr The bridge rectifier makes sure the LED will also work when you reverse direction... Quote
JopieK Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 you might want to use a 'gold cap' capacitor to make sure the LED also works at lower speeds (that particular kind of capacitor is an even better buffer than normal ones). In German, but that shouldn't be a problem should it: http://www.ralfwagner.de/rmb/bau/0310_led/ledschaltungen.html Quote
Locomotive Annie Posted February 25, 2013 Author Posted February 25, 2013 I dont know if its your photo or what but the torso looks like its light blue rather than the dark blue of the Conductor Charlie torso. I'm a terrible photographer and I think the flash washed out the blue. It's the same blue as some of my other Lego railway staff minifigs, but then I'm no expert. Something like this? Firebox LED for LEGO 12V motor by alainneke, on Flickr The bridge rectifier makes sure the LED will also work when you reverse direction... Thanks alainneke, that was exactly what I was looking for. And thanks too JopieK for your advice about the capacitor. Quote
kieran Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 Just a thought but if you don't have a rectifier lying around you could use 2 LED's back to back, one one be on if the train is moving forward and the other if it is reversing, depends on space as well I guess. Quote
Locomotive Annie Posted February 25, 2013 Author Posted February 25, 2013 Thanks Spitfire This is the part I used to mount the hook.....http://www.bricklink...Item.asp?P=3730 No it's not I just had a look at it again. I think it was from a Cogo fire engine set I purchased some years ago. However I will be using the Lego part in the link when I build the log bogies for this little loco to haul. Quote
bricks n bolts Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 Lovely 12v train Locomotive Annie! Great to see combinations of ancient brick with the modern stuff, the '70s red crank pin with Zephyr's rods Never used the sliding bogies before. Just had to double take bricklink, wow those '70s black wheels are rare, almost as rare as the '80s red ones... Do you have any plans for the Type 1 motor you are going to replace with a Type 2? Still waiting for that photo of 12v grey conductive rails on brown Enlighten track, I can just make out out a little corner of it on the first photo... Quote
Locomotive Annie Posted February 25, 2013 Author Posted February 25, 2013 Thanks B n B, I wasn't sure at first if that red crankpin piece would work with Zephyr's rods, but it does just fine. Some of the old bits take a bit of finding though it's always worth it as I enjoy working with this really well made older train stuff. More than likely the type 1 motor will get re-used on a small tank engine, only I haven't made up my mind as to what it will be just yet. I hadn't used the sliding bogie parts before either, but now that I have I'm keen to try using them on something else as they work really nicely. When I first tried fitting a conductor rail to the brown Enlighten track I thought it looked a bit odd, only after a little while of just letting it sit there I'm finding that I'm getting used to it. I'll take some photos later and post them in the other thread. Quote
