You all know what "The Vault" is, right? You don't? Well, it's the one place one earth where 'they' keep

all Lego sets ever produced MISB. As it seems, you can visit this place. Look a here!

In 2005 I went to Billund, Denmark. Hoping to find this vault. But no, all I saw was the park. From there

I went into my dark ages. Again. Right now I'm crawling out of them, again. I'm 46 years old and now there's

not a lot more I want from life than to visit this 'vault'.

My the question is: HOW can I get to visit "The Vault"?

Sttinky, unfortunately the Vault does NOT have every LEGO set ever made. There are some significant gaps... such as many sets made prior to 1957... many of the Automatic Binding Bricks sets, many early Norwegian and Swedish sets, many USA/Canada department store catalog sets, and most of the 80+ different wooden box sets.

But for modern years they do have all LEGO sets. Just prior to 1970 they have some gaps... but are always on the lookoout fo find samples on the secondary market.

Unfortunately I've not been to the vault... except I've seen hundreds of photos from it. And I don't have a clue as to how to get an invite... although I have been personally invited.

0:47: Someone didn't put the 1x2 blue tile, on the rear wing, in the right place. The rear doors could swing open!

Too bad this isn't in HD and a little less shaky, but still a cool video. I wonder the value of all those sets... It's great they exist untouched somewhere :classic:

I´ve been there a couple of times, it´s a cool place. The purpose of that vault, because there is more of them, is to be a place for the legal department people to pull out old sets. The reason is to be able to prove that a certain design on a set, a certain part design and so on was originally made by LEGO in a certain year. So if there is a design by another company that they think is a trademark/copyright intrussion they get the phony set and then go down and pull out a original LEGO one. That is then opened if needed and the process in court or settlement can continue. So this vault is not for historical reasons, it´s for protecting the brand.

How to get there? Well there are some ways:

  • A break-in (not recommended)
  • Invitation by someone with acces
  • The Inside Tour sometimes goes there

It is a great feeling to be able to touch all the old classics. Here´s a picture from 2006 when we were there:

EB member Snefroe holds the set, Ras aims for one in the bottom shelf and DoubleT is just super happy!

Maybe it's me, but why don't they place all the sets into the acrylic/plastic sealed boxes to protect them better? Could still be opened if needed, but no damaged corners etc. from being handled on an occasional basis.

I would think that white gloves should be required for wearing when handling those boxes... we humans do have oily skin... and repeated handling of the boxes cannot be good for them! :sceptic:

Again, as I understand it this vault is for legal use, not for history. There are other vaults that has the history purpose, I'd guess the handling if any there is on another level!

Yes there is the "LEGO Collections" Vault... the real one I want to visit... this one is likely off limits to most everyone, since it's not made for visiting.... but it's the one I would like to see (actually I'd like both!)...

Here are some images from there... things you likely won't ever find in any collections...

The 1954-55 700 b/c Danish Retailer Windows/Doors Box (none known in private hands)....

The 1952 700/5 Basic Set... again none known in private hands (this may have been only a prototype)....

And the 1955 (first non-structure) LEGO Mosaik set... only 1 known in private hands...

These are all new images that will be in the next version of my Unofficial LEGO Set/Parts Collectors Guide as DVD/download... free to current owners... when released in a few months!

As for the visitors vault... they don't take care of sets as well as they should there... I have seen stacks of heavy boxes on top of much smaller lighter ones... but again... they're not there for historica purposes... just legal ones...

As cool as "our" vault is, it hardly has the same historical power as "Memory Lane" does.

Nice! You´ll have a lot of unpacking to do there  !
