peter_m Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 I am about to buy a big set for myself - unless I win the lottery this might be the only one I get in next 2 years. So far I have only one set - 8258, which I simply love for its complexity and functions. I am in two minds whether to buy a Unimog 8110 while it is still available at reasonable price or wait for 42009 crane. The first one is tempting because of pneumatics and the other one because of its size, but I am not quite sure it will be as exciting as Unimog. What are your thoughts and assumptions regarding these two sets - based on experience (8110) and the bits of news (42009)? Any advice / answer / opinion will be much appreciated :) Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 (edited) I would hold out for the 42009 set,the crane it's self on the 8258 is 'pants' so with the up coming crane you could actually lift something with it. you can also lift stuff with the unimog's crane as well, but I suspect not as much. colinrichardson Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 I think it really depends on what interests you. I think the 8110 is a very good in terms of fun per cost: It's a really interesting build with some ingenious building techniques and it's also very fun to use the crane, etc afterwards. I think the 42009 looks to be as fun to use and none of us really know what the building experience will be like at this point. If you're ambivalent on which one you'd rather have (you're not a Unimog fan or particularly interested in construction equipment), I'd get the Unimog: it will be discontinued soon and probably won't be getting cheaper on the second-hand market. The 42009 will probably be available for at least 2 more years, so if you really want it then, you can make it your big purchase at that point. Quote
allanp Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 (edited) Unimog is waaaaaaayy better IMHO, not only does it have more life like mechanics for the crane arm with it's onboard compressor and the ability to operate all functions (besides slewing) simultaniously, it also has mechanised and motorised slewing (as opposed to the purely manual one on the crane, no mechanisms there at all) and it also has more lifelike mechanics for the drive train including 4 wheel drive, suspension, 3 diffs, torque tubes, panhard rods and steering, the crane only has steering and 2 wheel drive. The only thing the crane has over the Unimog is the two function outriggers. Besides that the Unimog will be discontinued soon, a couple years before the crane so you would still have time to get that aswell. Edited May 7, 2013 by allanp Quote
dhc6twinotter Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 The Unimog is in its 2nd year of production, and I would buy it before it gets discontinued. Perhaps in a couple years you will be able to purchase the crane. Quote
N-4K0 Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 You really think the Unimog could be discontinued in like 5 years time or so? I would think it's special/rare enough as a set (thinking about the vehicle type etc.) to keep a certain interest and sales up. I actually purchased it myself earlier today. I bought the 9398 Rock Crawler some weeks ago online, but the store sent me another item than what I ordered. Sending it back and getting what I ordered in return already took over 2 weeks, and as if that wasn't enough, I got a mail today saying it's been put on wait. Apparently someone made a mistake regarding how many they had in stock, and they were out of the 9398 faster than they thought. So I cancelled the order and instead ordered the Unimog, which is in stock. Funny thing is that I originally wanted the Unimog, but ordered the 9398 instead because the Unimog was sold out Quote
dhc6twinotter Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Generally speaking, Technic sets seem to go on a 2 year cycle. The Unimog has already been out for about 1.5 years, and I think there is a very good possibility of it being discontinued at the end of this year. Quote
N-4K0 Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Ok... but what if a set is hugely popular and fans want it continued? Have TLG ever continued a set so widely demanded? Quote
Lost_In_Noise Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 The steering....:( I don't know why, but the unimog is one of my least played with sets. Buy the big crane, it has more pieces, and surely would work better than the old 8421. Quote

Not that I'm aware of, however, LEGO did re-release the 8459/8464 front loader and a revised 8461 Williams F1 Racer/8458 Silver Champion. I don't think those sets were re-released because of there being wide demand though, but rather because LEGO did not have very many new Technic sets to offer in 2001 and 2002. Quote

Well, time will tell in the case of the Unimog, but I suppose you're right, and it will be discontinued soon enough. Quote
peter_m Posted May 7, 2013 Author Posted May 7, 2013 (edited) Decision made - I have gone through "Unimog 8110 MOCs(...)" thread and decided to get 8110 now :). I have already bought it for $187 (new, sealed, with shipping) which seems to be a fair price. I will hopefully get the 42009 before it is out of production :) Thanks for responses! Doc_Brown Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Cool, I would have gone with the unimog, simply because you would have a different set of tires to build mocs with considering you also have 8258. Wish I had 8258!!!!! The steering on the unimog is a bit sad, but I'm sure someone has invented a better way you mod it. Have fun with your build! It was the 2nd best model I have ever built, after 8043, and I really enjoyed it considering I started whilst being awake for 30 hours. hahah Quote

His steering and suspension fixes and a video explaining everything can be found mine can be found here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1696315/Unimog%20Front%20Axle.zip Edited May 8, 2013 by rchan016 Quote
