Posted June 30, 201311 yr I just recently started collecting star wars legos but i dont really know a lot about it :S maybe if some more experienced collectors could give me some tips :) i have ~30 sw minifigures atm. Only one with yellow head, that being count dooku. I also have some rarer figures like boba fett and general grievous
June 30, 201311 yr First: welcome EB, Second: what era are you more familiar with, Original Trilogy or Prequel Trilogy? Third: how much are you willing to spend on your collection? Fourth: set availability (country). You should try to make your self this questions and then we could help you.

Well, i quite like both eras but if i have to choose, prequel trilogy wins. I'm not really willing to spend hundreds of euros to this (at least not yet) and i live in Finland
June 30, 201311 yr My first mistake: I started out trying to be a completionist with Star Wars beginning in 2005. I felt glutonous and it took the fun out of collecting. My second mistake: I pigeon-holed myself to only collecting Star Wars. Now I know in some neighborhoods I can get beat up for saying what I am about to say, but there are so many awesome sets out there that are not Star Wars themed. Once I let go of my conscience self and began to collect Lego in general (minifigures, holiday sets, trains, space shuttle, modular buildings, Lord of the Rings, castle, pirates, etc) I began to really experience the joy of Lego. The variety of pieces and colors allow me to do some wonderful things when I MOC. There are so many excellent builds and techniques to learn that I would highly recommend broadening your scope to collecting Lego in general. Welcome to the hobby!
June 30, 201311 yr About collecting only one theme/subtheme: It's good to have a focus in your interest when you first start out, to help you build up your collection. (And on a broader scale, a focus on LEGO among toys in general.) You don't want to be stuck between or among two or more themes, not having funds left when something great and big comes out and not having enough of the pieces appropriately shaped and colored for one theme to start building MOCs. But as you expand into LEGO activities beyond collecting -- namely, MOCing -- definitely do expand into other themes, to improve your ability to build in other themes. (And also to further increase your collection's versatility.)
June 30, 201311 yr I would say, for a Star Wars collection, look for the most iconic vehicles/sets that have the most important characters. Don't go for battle packs or army building right away. Get sets like the Falcon, Podracers, X-Wing, Tie Fighter, Slave 1. I've found that with Star Wars sets, it's impossible to be a completionist, as said above, so having a focus on a certain film or trilogy really helps in narrowing your collecting to a reasonable amount. I haven't bought as much Star Wars recently as I used to, due to the LOTR sets, but I now see that if I ever return to the Star Wars theme with any intensity, focusing on sets based on the films is the best idea. Clone Wars stuff, while fun, is way less impressive or satisfying, IMO, than film sets.
June 30, 201311 yr Another tip is, get yourself a Bricklink account. Then you can start collecting some older figs that you may have missed. You can get older sets for super cheap, too. Bricklink and even e-bay sometimes, can be a great resource and money saver.

But now i opened them again and star wars legos just catched my eye. Then i started collecting

Then i started collecting one small tip for the serious collector legos is not a word, LEGO is the plural of LEGO. ie: I went and bought a heap of Lego this week, all sorts of Lego sets that come with a heap of different Lego bricks and figures other than that, buy what you enjoy and try and stay within budget, the try part is entirely up to you though. June 30, 201311 yr Hi i started myself a few month ago and i go this way: I buy full and new sets where the scene/vehicle/starship attracts me and have unique or nice figs. Slave 1 for example. I buy new and sealed sets via ebay that have no figs where i like to have the ship, but still have the figs. The milinium falcon is an example. This way i got the MF for 70€ instead 150€. The Y-Wing is another example. I buy the 10188 DS that gave me most figs that all collectors must have. I personally prefere OT than PT but really dislike TCW figs. If you like PT more, be careful not to run in TCW sets. Sometimes it is hard to differe between PT and TCW sets. Just have a look at the main characters eyes... For example it is very hard to get a good NON TCW Yoda. Most ebay Yodas are TCW and look more like a Gremlin than one of the most powerful Jedi ever. The same is with Count Dooku. If you like both, and both NON TCW, the actual "Duel on Geonosis" set is a must buy for you! Dino Edited June 30, 201311 yr by Darth Dino

Actually battle packs are great way to start a collection by allowing one to get the most common figures out of the way early and then save for bigger sets which contain rarer figures. Glados98 you say prequel trilogy is your preferred area, I think you just found the perfect time to start collecting as with the end of waves that were full of Clone wars there are now new/updated sets from the prequel trilogy mostly Episode II I recommend buying the clone vs droideka battle pack (75000) to help start up your collection
June 30, 201311 yr Go for the most iconic vehicles, for example: X wing, Y wing, millenium falcon, TIE fighter, TIE advanced, AT AT, snow speeder... only to begin with, with those you get the most iconic figs and can represent almost any scene of the OT saga.
June 30, 201311 yr You said you're not willing to pay hundreds of euros. Well, that might be difficult when talking about "collecting". Let me give you a number - 4500€. That's the amount you can spend if you purchase every SW set available in the moment. Buying only 10% of the current sets will set you back 450€, buying them used probably still 300€. And this is in Germany. As I know things are more expensive in the north, you have to ask yourself how much you want to spend, seriously. This is an expensive hobby. And there is a chance you get lost in collecting and lose focus. Just browse through the sets and get some you like. Or if you prefer minifigs only, then have a look at bricklink or ebay to get the ones you really want to have.
June 30, 201311 yr If you are more on the PT side you could aquire a balanced amount of set of both factions like AT TE, LAAT (gunship), a couple BARC speeders, some battle packs, an ARC 170 and a jedy star fighter for the republic and the new spider droid, MTT, a droid gunship, a vulture droid, and a tri fighter for the CIS, and the duel of Geonosis, that way you also get the best figs for that era, its quite a lot but nothing compared to the complete LEGO SW lineup, once you get them you can move up to other themes if you want or build your own MOCs with them. By ARC-130 you mean ARC-170 right? I've never heard of an ARC-130 but I have heard of both an AC-130 (Modern Gunship) and an ARC-170(starwars fighter)
