In light of my recent rebuild of the 8258 with applying all MODs of Designer Han I would like to write a small Homage for this model.

Thank you to TLG bringing the swedish truck brand Scania to our mind with such a fantastic model.

8258.jpg

For me this is the best model (together with the 8455) of the studless area (and competes with the best models of the studded area for ranking Nr. 1, e.g. with 8880 and 8868 and 8480) until now and this judgement includes the Unimog 8110 (official version), the excavator 8043 and the mobile crane 8421 (of course the tow truck 8285 as well but this one isn’t really a competitor for the 8258, by far not).

Why do I think this?

  • Best and most realistic look of all technic sets – you see at a glance that this is a Scania crane truck – it looks (and works, apart from not using pneumatics) exactly as the real thing
  • Very interesting and clever build with almost no repetition which is remarkable for a set with such a high part count
  • Outstanding function-switching gearbox – only the 8043 gearbox can compete here
  • Most complex gear drivetrains (especially with the twin-wheel MOD of Designer Han) i know – maybe the old 8880 can compete here and maybe the 8043 – this pure building fun equalizes also the usage of LAs (which would be a con for me)
  • Perfect and senseful usage of PF, very well integrated
  • Number of functions all performing smoothly and save (at least after applying the MODs of Designer Han)

My only cons are:

  • The crane can’t lift anything (but not really important for me cause of my age ;-) )
  • Manually operation of the stands of the outtriggers

Conclusion: The overall package of the 8258 is awesome and outstanding – and I strongly recommend to apply ALL MODs of designer Han (cudos for you, Han), incl. the twin wheel MOD which improves the look a lot (BTW: the “marriage” of the twin-wheel back-part with the front chassis is quite fideling and a real challenge)

I’m quite sure this model will rank among my top 5 technic sets till kingdom come: 8880, 8868, 8110 (only when slightly modified), 8455 – no internal ranking between these 5 sets.

So again: Thank you TLG for offering and developing this set, and thank you also to Designer Han for making it perfect.

Why would you say Scania, it is not a licensed product, and although it looks a tiny bit like a Scania it is not clearly the r-type cabin for sure.

my first association was without any hesitation a Scania and IMHO it not only looks a tiny bit.. anyway, this is not the most important topic concerning this model ;-)

Nice thread. I have tried to get my hands on this model for a little while. Sadly its a bit over budget atm :(

I hear you. I once wanted it for the parts but now there are better sets to get like the 42009 crane but i still feel drawn to it. It's a nice set just for looks and of course the functions as well.

As far as the outriggers, I think we can modify them as the ones used in the 42009. Haven't already built my 2nd hand 8258 and haven't already buy the 42009 but saw reviews and lot of pics and think the new otriggers could fit the truck. Hope to read something about that possible mod in the near future
