SkaForHire Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 (edited) Life and Death in Kaliphlin Mini-Challenge(s). In Kaliphlin a very popular gambling game of cards is played with the Wizards and Princess Deck of cards. The casinos at Lost Vega theme whole rooms around the Wizards and Princess deck, and any card player worth the sand in his boots knows how to play highs/lows with the deck. However, another popular use of the deck is fortune telling. It is said that the cards can represent the past, present, and future of a person if read by a knowledgeable fortune teller. Over the years telling fortunes with cards has surpassed crystal balls, dice, bones, and even some spells. Most children in Kaliphlin have an idea of what some of the cards mean. Below is a list of the cards in the deck, and their most basic meaning. The Major Cards: 0 The Fool I The Red Princess -- Often associated with bloodletting. II The Red Wizard -- Often associated with fire or burning. III The Demon IV Sun [[Claimed by Masa, 2 more claims left]] V Moon [[claimed by NM, 2 more claims left]] VI The Gambler VII Loving embrace VIII Justice IX Fortune [[Claimed by Eryn, 2 claims left]] X The long snake or the dragon, depending on the deck [[Claimed by Gabe, Emma, 1 more claim left]] XI The Blue Princess -- Often associated with vice XII The Blue Wizard -- Often associated with cold or ice XIII Death [[Claimed by Lego Drake, Eryn, 1 claim left]] XIV The Cat / or the Fox, depending on the deck XV The Emperor XVI Kaligem [[Claimed by Gideon, 2 more claims left]] XVII Hanging man [[Claimed by Lego Drake]] XVIII The Dog XIX The Tower XX The Judge XI The Sandstorm The Suits: Coins A (1) - 10, Cup-bearer, Princess, Treasurer, Wizard (Black) Chains A (1) - 10, Cup-bearer, Princess, Treasurer, Wizard (Black) Swords A (1) - 10, Cup-bearer, Princess, Treasurer, Wizard (Green) Flowers A (1) - 10, Cup-bearer, Princess, Treasurer, Wizard (Green) For the most part, many of the lower numbered cards of the suits are taken out when divining with the deck. But a face card can hold certain meanings, depending on the reader. The First Challenge: Since the cards have so many meanings, one can interpret any combination of cards in different ways. Your job is to depict a scene in Kaliphlin that reflects three of these cards as if the character in your scene had just had his/her fortune read. You can either randomly roll the cards with some dice at home, or you can pick the three you would like to influence your MOC. Traditionally, the reader would pull three cards representing the client they are reading, the first card picked is a characteristic or past related trait of the client. The second card is a present characteristic or a immediate future of the client, and the third card represents a long term or permanent future. Three Princesses is often thought of as very good luck, while three wizards are surely a bad omen. There are many variations of the readings in Kaliphlin, but you will need to use at least three cards and let us know what they are when you present your build. To clarify, you don't need to illustrate a character having their fortune read, just a scene in Kaliphlin representing the three cards. The character does not have to be your sigfig. These builds should be no larger than 32x32 Here is a random dice roller to help you out. You could roll a "D30" and ignore the numbers 23 and above, with 22 being the fool. If you want to add in the suits, you would need to roll a higher die, which the site offers. The Second Challenge: I was too busy to illustrate the deck myself, but you can call dibs on one of the cards listed above, and make your rendition of the scene that should be on the front of the card. A card can be claimed by up to three individuals, but only one can be from outside Kaliphlin. (IE: DaMaxiums, Gideon, and Captain Beerbeard could all claim Death as the first two are in Kaliphlin, and CBB is in Nocty, but if only DM from Kaliphlin signed up for Death, nobody except CBB could claim Death also ) These builds should be no larger than 10x10 You can do either challenge or both. The Deadline: The Deadline for this mini-challenge is Dec 1st. Please tag your entrys with [L&DiK] C1 (or C2 if you are doing the second challenge) at the front of the title, additionally, please post a link to your entry in this thread. Prizes: There will be three categories, Kaliphlin member entries for the First Challenge, Kaliphlin member entries for the Second Challenge, and best entry from a Non- Kaliphlin builder. Each category will win a 70400 Forest Ambush. The winner will be chosen by popular vote via Eurobricks poll. Edited November 13, 2013 by SkaForHire Quote

Nightstalker Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 Interesting... I'll need to put some thought into this before building. Quote
SkaForHire Posted October 3, 2013 Author Posted October 3, 2013 Sorry for my stupidity, but what do I need to do? If I am reading this correctly, I can pick three different cards and build a scene based on those three for challenge one? That is exactly right. you can random roll the cards, or just pick three. They have lose interpretations, so the sky is the limit here... just make sure that the build represents an interpretation of three different cards. Quote
Mike S Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 Sounds awesome! Funny, I was recently thinking about photographing some of my minifigs and editiing the pics to look like collectable cards. I would like to see an example of what you had in mind though for the cards. Quote

SkaForHire Posted October 4, 2013 Author Posted October 4, 2013 Great question, the three cards should be incorporated in one build. So, for example, if the first card was fortune and you were interpreting that as the characters past, the character might be rich in the MOC, if the second card was the emperor, you might make the character also an important political player, and if the the third card was the fool, you might have the theme of the whole MOC being the humiliation of the character. Like I said, the cards are very loosely interpreted, so as long as their is a good explanation anything flies. Quote

SkaForHire Posted October 4, 2013 Author Posted October 4, 2013 In that case I pick Justice, Fortune, and the Emperor! For challenge 2, or those are just the cards you will be using in your Challenge 1 MOC? Also, prizes added, see original post. Quote

Gideon Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 I rolled a random generator and came up with 16, so I will do "Kaligem" for the second challenge. (Hopefully I will be able to make both of them, but the small one at least ) Quote
Emma Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 I completely forgot about this with everything else going on - I'll try to at least make a build for challenge 2 - can I claim card X The long snake or the dragon? Quote
SkaForHire Posted October 22, 2013 Author Posted October 22, 2013 UPDATE: Deadline extended. When I originally posted this, I thought the Chal 1 Deadline would be Dec 15th, now that it is a month further, I wanted to spread this out a little. Quote
Gideon Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 Great! I hope this means that the deck will be more illustrated than the scattered cards we have picked now Quote
Gabe Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 This is a very interesting challenge Ska, i'll have a go at building some cards and then reassess if i can make something for the first catagory after that. Hard to decide which card to choose, but put me down for the dragon. (I might build something for the cat/fox and tower too, idk!) Quote
LegoDrake Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 (edited) Wow, how did I miss this? I'll take the Hanging man and Death, please. Edited November 3, 2013 by LegoDrake Quote
Mike S Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Great! I hope this means that the deck will be more illustrated than the scattered cards we have picked now I hope to see the entire deck illustrated and if it doesn't get completed by the deadline I plan to try and complete all the cards eventually... honestly the card thing was a brilliant idea as this has more potential than your average challenge which will get buried and forgotten about within a few months (even though this topic did get burried pretty quick, I think that when it is complete it will be one of the more memorable projects of Kaliphlin) Quote
Gabe Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Hey Ska, just a quick reminder that Emma claimed the long snake/dragon card too... just thought i'd mention it as you put me down for that card but not her as well, despite her putting in her bid first. Quote
Emma Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Thanks Gabe... :poke:Ska, please put me down for the dragon too . Quote
Erynlasgalen Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 I don't know how I missed this the first time around, sounds like a great challenge. Can we claim two cards for second challenge? If so, put me down for the Fortune and Death cards. Quote
