MKJoshA Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 (edited) I had arrived for my regular Friday shift at Hao's. "Hao" is Drallish for something like "Fun Place." Dralls aren't known for coming up with the most creative names. Being in Imperial space, non-human species try to stay in the background as much as possible to avoid punishment. My brother was out with one of his officers letting off steam over the events of the week. The main topic of the night was the Qwohog that got arrested for being too public with his actions. I was also thinking about that topic. I was thinking that it was about time I stopped holding my tongue and actually did something about the Empire's actions. OoC: Please judge as a free build. Edit: Final Picture with tile on the top :) Edited November 9, 2013 by MKJoshA Quote
MKJoshA Posted October 19, 2013 Author Posted October 19, 2013 No feedback from anyone? Does that mean this is a perfect build? Anyone? Quote
pihlbrick Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 Ok here goes :) i think it captures the mood from bars in the clone wars quite well. The stairs bother me a bit, it doesn't seem that there is room for a mini fig to use it. Quote
LegoFjotten Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 I like the outside base with the slopes and tiles, and I think the window works well. The overall composition of the indoor scene is nice, but there are two key things I would change: 1. There is too much black. It is hard to make details stand out when everything is black and much more difficult to photograph. You could try using stripes/rows in dark or light grey to break things up a bit, or simulate wall panels by using a different color. 2. The studded floor, it needs some tiles (or you can snot it using regular bricks). If you don't have enough tiles at the moment, invest $5 or $10 in tiles from Bricklink - you will probably use these in every SoNE MOC you build. Quote

For the stairs, if there were enough room for a minifigure to use the stairs would it be better? I tried to capture the look of the stairs from Quark's in DS9. I'll try to work on the black and am looking into getting plates from Bricklink. I have to say though that I am a big fan of stud floors and will have to keep trying to win over those of you who don't like them. Thank you for your feedback. I've really liked your builds and know I have a lot to learn. Quote
MstrOfPppts Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 I really like the pipelines in this MOC. The big front window is also nice. I think that besides the already mentioned facts (too much black, too many studs and too narrow stairs) this MOC somehow misses the SW feel. Maybe some wall lighting decorations and huge speakers with some electronics around in corners would help. Also there's too many humans around. Pubs were mostly visited with the bottom rank of alien species ... Quote

Good luck with winning people over to studded floors! Unfortunately, I think it will be difficult to move past an "average moc" score with a studded floor in a "modern" indoor setting, but I'd love to see you prove me wrong! Quote

I'm really working to get the right greebling for Star Wars. Quote
MKJoshA Posted October 27, 2013 Author Posted October 27, 2013 Ok, in case you can't tell by the picture Hao's is undergoing some construction. Tell me what you think about the walls and whether it gets rid of the "too much black" problem. Quote
LEGO Train 12 Volts Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 Very nice bar! The architecture is in perfect harmony with the world of SW! Quote
Dapper-D2 Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 It's definitely an improvement. I'd work on changing the floor next. Quote
MKJoshA Posted November 3, 2013 Author Posted November 3, 2013 (edited) I've posted the final entry. Thank you everyone for all your comments. Let me know what you think of the finished product. Edited November 3, 2013 by MKJoshA Quote
MstrOfPppts Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 The gray in the walls adds a lot to the plain black walls. Also the tiling of the floor looks much much better! Quote
RonaldusMaxus Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 Nice bar bro! I have to agree with the staircase problem, kind of small, but everything else is great! I especially like the piping as well! Quote
Bob De Quatre Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 The updated scene is really nice, the walls are better with that touch of gray, maybe you could just have had plates instead of bricks. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 Sounds like you've made some good improvements to this. I definitely like the angled window and the piping. As has been said, I do think that the stairs are rather skinny, and maybe tiling over the upper level would make it more consistent with the bottom. I also think you should tile over the top edge of the wall — it's not that noticeable, but like adding a good base, it's one of those finishing touches that make the scene seem a lot cleaner. Quote

That's a really good point about the top edge of the wall. If I get a chance before this is judged I'll post an additional picture with tiles added. Unless everyone can just imagine it... ok maybe not. I'm pretty busy these days so we'll see if I get it done in time. As for the staircase. I've modified it from what it used to look like to accommodate minfigures. They can actually fit on any step now. I really like it and am proud of the design since I haven't seen it used elsewhere. It's staying, so there! Quote
Shadows of Nar Eurbrikka Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 Judges have awarded you 3 XP! Your character's stats will be updated shortly. Quote
Gideon Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 The final version looks really good, I have not seen all the previous versions but from the discussion it looks like you've listened to feedback and improved the build. Keep it up! I like the closeup shot of the non-humans a lot, but a hint when you do closeups (especially of black pieces) is to dust the build off first. I either use canned air from the hardware store (a bit expensive but very effective) or the vacuum cleaner with a net on the inlet (as I've shown here). Quote
