Gabe Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 Very very late but hopefully this is proof of life before the deadline for the comp? (If it's ok i'll replace these shockers with better pics tomorrow - i only had indoor light tonight - edit: better pics posted now!) Illustration for the dragon card showing a rare Kaliphlin sand dragon... the card traditionally means great fortune, whether the fortune is good or bad depends whether the card is inverted in the deck or not. Yes i trespassed slightly over the 10 stud square limit with tree and sand overhang. Hopefully it's not too much against the spirit of the rules but if it is i'll cop the DQ on the chin. (I just couldn't resist embellishing!) A couple of closer pics of the head and back of the sand dragon, for those that are interested. A bit of a crop to show how it would look on a card. Well, that's it, short and sweet. Sorry Ska that i couldn't get anything else built for what was a very intriguing comp premise. I had some more ideas for other cards but sadly the end of the month snuck up on me. Anyway, i hope you guys like what i have done - thanks for looking! Ps. I'd also like to claim for a UoP credit for a brick-built animal, please! Quote
gedren_y Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 Wonderful wurm, Gabe. This would certainly qualify for a couple UoP DoH credits. Being in a contest isn't against the rules for credit claims. Quote
Lord Vladivus Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 I love the overlapping belly scales. Great build! Quote
The Yeti Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 I love almost everything about this. The perspective, the shot framing with the two trees, the organic nature of the dragon, well done! About the only thing I am confused by is the gradient in the background, is it meant to convey different sky tones or a boundary between sea and night sky? Quote
mrcp6d Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 Awesome dragon! I really like the belly scales, but the hands look a little bit odd to me. Quote
The Yeti Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 Awesome dragon! I really like the belly scales, but the hands look a little bit odd to me. I found them adorable in a pitiable T-rex sort of way. Quote
Gideon Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 Wonderful dragon! And the background also looks great Quote
HammerBro Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 Scales on the dragon look great, as do the eyes. Nice job of sand and trees. Quote
soccerkid6 Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 Incredible shaping The scales look perfect and I like the use of bones. The sand spilling from where the dragon burst out looks great too Quote
Gabe Posted December 2, 2013 Author Posted December 2, 2013 Wonderful wurm, Gabe. This would certainly qualify for a couple UoP DoH credits. Being in a contest isn't against the rules for credit claims. Thanks gedren, i just put in a claim for a brick built animal - was considering for the trees as well, but they are pretty ordinary so i decided against it. I love the overlapping belly scales. Great build! Thanks! Yeah, his front is definitely his best side! I love almost everything about this. The perspective, the shot framing with the two trees, the organic nature of the dragon, well done! About the only thing I am confused by is the gradient in the background, is it meant to convey different sky tones or a boundary between sea and night sky? Thanks for your kind words Yeti! Yeah, the blue gradient background is meant to show the darkening of the sky at dusk. I'm a bit sad that i didn't have any plates in those colours to soften the horizontal lines a bit, but oh well. I thought about throwing some pink or even that new light yellow in there too, but decided that might make it look even more confusing! Awesome dragon! I really like the belly scales, but the hands look a little bit odd to me. Heh yeah they do look a bit spindly, don't they? I was taking a bit of inspiration from drawings of chinese dragons, that have more emphisis on the sinuous body and less on heavy, weight bearing limbs, so maybe that's why they ended up that way. Wonderful dragon! And the background also looks great Cheers Gideon, glad you like it! Scales on the dragon look great, as do the eyes. Nice job of sand and trees. Thankyou! Incredible shaping The scales look perfect and I like the use of bones. The sand spilling from where the dragon burst out looks great too Thanks Soccerkid! Yeah i was pretty pleased to see how nicely the bones fitted and looked there - i think it's my fav element of the build. Quote
Niku Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 Nice wyrn, I like the scale and the techniques used on it, looks like it is armored articulated. I really like it. Quote
Gunman Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 i really like the use of the bones... niceeee Quote
Gideon Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 UP DH credit for brick-built animals: Definitely +1 Quote
Emma Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 Nice work! The dragon is very organic looking; the curvy body is definitely my favorite aspect of this build with the really nice shaping and the details you were able to incorporate. I also like how Kaliphlin-y it looks with the sand and trees. Quote
Mike S Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 Great entry! I really like how you built the body of the dragon! Quote
Gabe Posted December 3, 2013 Author Posted December 3, 2013 Nice wyrn, I like the scale and the techniques used on it, looks like it is armored articulated. I really like it. Thanks Niku! It doesn't have much articulation actually as the elements in the body are quite tighty packed together. But it's good to hear that it gives that impression. i really like the use of the bones... niceeee Thanks Gunman! Nice work! The dragon is very organic looking; the curvy body is definitely my favorite aspect of this build with the really nice shaping and the details you were able to incorporate. I also like how Kaliphlin-y it looks with the sand and trees. Thanks Emma! I confess i went back to look at your entry a few times while building this - the lines you were able to achieve in your dragon were certainly an inspiration. Great entry! I really like how you built the body of the dragon! Thanks Masa! UP DH credit for brick-built animals: Definitely +1 Yup. UoP DoH +1 for that wurm. Thanks fellas! Quote
kabel Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 absolutely amazing dragon, hard to understand how you did it, therefore really outstanding! Quote
Torgar Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 Really nice dragon! I like how you framed the card with the trees. Great job! Quote
Gabe Posted December 4, 2013 Author Posted December 4, 2013 absolutely amazing dragon, hard to understand how you did it, therefore really outstanding! Thanks Kabel! It's actually built on a pretty basic spine of plates modified with bars and clips, with the triple bar modified 1x2 plates on the back to get those exo-force arms to come out at a nice angle and hide the sides. It's a bit gappy still, but the magic of photography fixes all! Really nice dragon! I like how you framed the card with the trees. Great job! Thanks Torgar, glad you like it! Quote
Simon_S Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 Very nice! I love the use of the tooth plate and the boat studs. Tan and black, togather with dark tan and some other colours in the background it makes a lovely combination Quote
Kayne Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 Wow...this is great! I love this dragon, you have a talent for adding life into the MOC's that many builders do not. I definitely give the +1 to brick built animal for this build Quote
NiceMarmot Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 +1 for the brick-built dragon, definitely! Very nice indeed. I like those palm trees too. You could knock off one of the tree requirements too if you wanted. Quote
Tomsche Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 Great entry mate, reminds me a bit of Dune for some reason Quote
