Instructions for Skid Steer Loader (Bobcat)

After much preparation I am proud to present the instructions for my Skid Steer Loader, based on the New Holland LS160;

It's driven by two electric motors, steers differentially, and the boom and bucket are pneumatic. Check it out moving about on

Control is by a tethered hand controller with built in automatic pneumatic pump - instructions are included for this.

There's also a chapter describing the building techniques I used, loads of photos of the model and real machine, and instructions for an optional pneumatic grab attachment.

You can buy the instructions from my website and MOCplans for a small charge of $12 - these are rendered by Eric Albrecht, so you know you are buying quality.

I've listed the model on Rebrickable, so it should be easy to figure out if you have the parts you need to build it!

It's great to see that you have made instructions for the skid steer and for the skip truck?

Those skid steer loaders are not easy to make because of how small they are.

You should try and make a new model for 2014.

Very true Ryan, it's tricky to pack all the functionality in there and still have a good looking model.

You might find it fascinating as I used simple bricks to achieve this, no specialised gearboxes or anything.

Hello Jennifer,

I wanted to thank-you for my inspiration from your models. You may or may not remember me from about 16-17 years ago where I "pestered" you often with questions about your models and of how various parts of them worked. Back in that day all I had was your excellent photos, that helped me to 'reverse engineer' your MOCs.

I still have the Crane, Bobcat, Small Excavator, and your best the Large Excavator still assembled and proudly displayed on my MOC shelf. (I sometimes have to change the rubber bands in the hand control/compressor as these don't get used very often)

I may purchase your instructions just to see how off my building was compared to the 'creator' of all these fantastic construction MOCs'.

Do you plan to publish BI on your 'Roll-off Container Truck'? I built this the same way, except I was never able to figure out the cab for this truck. I did finish the chassis and all its' funtions, but got stopped trying to figure out the electrical connections and the that cab!

I think that I'll definitely be having a go at a bobcat. One thing that IO note about the real ones is that they can switch between 4 wheel steer in and skid steer. I imagine that that'd be doable, but the model would have to be bigger I'd have thought.

Glad you liked the MOCs from the "old days" - it doesn't seem that long ago :-)

I definitely recommend you get the instructions for this one, it's been a while since I built it, and when I rebuilt it using the instructions it surprised even me. There's some quite subtle techniques in the construction.

I may publish instructions for some of the other models, depending on how well these ones sell; a lot of time and effort goes into creating them, and I've got to eat :-)

From what I recall, 4 wheel steer was only present on some of the more advanced types, although it may be more common nowadays. But certainly it would make the model bigger and more complex.

Wow I wish I had instructions 5 years ago(or maybe not). I spent a very long time trying to replicate this skid steer and it was my first technic build! Thank You Jennifer for inspiring my life long hobby .

GuiliuG has designed exactly such a loader. It can switch between 4 wheel steer and skid steer. It is much larger, more complicated, and more expensive though. You can read all about it in another thread. The vast majority of real skidders do not have this capability though. The whole point of making skid steer in the first place is that it is dead simple.

Thanks Jennifer.........The instructions look top notch and I'm very interested in building the new remote controller. :thumbup: I've included a photo of my 'reverse engineering' of this great MOC of yours, when you first released it. I know, I know its' very dusty..............been assembled for many years.

Great reverse engineering job there. The big bucket works really well too :-)

It's odd seeing the old version of the controller again! It worked well enough, but I think the new one based on joysticks is more realistic.
