The boxart shows Batman battling The Penguin. It also got the Batman symbol and the DC Comics symbols at the bottom. The back of the box is mostly green. It doesn't go well with Batman. It shows an alternate action shot and all the play features. The sides of the box shows the DC Comics Super Heroes logo and also the same illustration as the front of the box. On the top of the box features Batman in his Scuba Suit as the 1:1 figure. It also shows the name of the set in different languages. Contents Inside the box you'll find an instruction booklet and three unnumbered bags. Surprisingly, they do not include a comic nor a sticker sheet in this set. It’s uncommon to see super heroes sets without the comic and sticker sheet nowadays. The Instructions The instructions have a green background (as all of the 2014 DC Comics sets do so). It’s quite straight forward and easy to follow for young kids. There are a few ads for The LEGO Movie , DC and the LEGO Club in here. Also, there isn’t the DC minifigures lineup picture, for some reason. These appear at the end of the instructions. Interesting Pieces These are the interesting pieces in this set. The gun for Batman is new to me. It’s also nice to get the 1x1 round tile piece with the eye printing on it. The grey short legs is also new to me. Note that the piece on the upper right corner is printed, not a sticker. Minifigures The minifigures are the main selling point of this set as they are all new and exclusive. First of all is Scuba Batman. Here is a reference image for him from the comics. Batman comes in a new, mostly dark blue suit that is supposed to give him the ability to dive. I personally like this figure a lot. Here is the back view of Scuba Batman, with his air tanks on for him to breath underwater. Nothing really interesting. Here is a look of him with all his gears taken off. You can see the front torso printing much clearer. Interestingly, unlike the other Batmans LEGO has made, this one has a unique face. The first face is actually the same print as the others, but this one is on a black minifig head. Here is a look at the back of him without the air tank and mask. You can see his full backprinting and his second face. It’s interesting. At last, this is the view of him withal his gear on. His got a nice gun. You can also see what he looks like with his second face. I prefer the first face better. Next, it’s the Penguin. Here is a reference image for him from the comics. This one is different from the previous one. The biggest difference is that he now has a big coat on. It looks pretty good and I really wanted to have this fig since the pictures have come out. Here is a look of him from the back. You can see the back backprinting. Here is him with all his accessories taken off. You can see the front torso printing clearly in this picture. The Build First of all is Batman’s scuba vehicle. Here is a front view of Batman’s scuba vehicle. Again, the bat symbol on it is printed on the brick, not a sticker. Here are the side views of the boat. You’ve got flick fire missiles at both of the sides of the boat. Here is the back view of the boat. Nothing special at all. There’s a clip here where you can keep Batman’s gun there. Here is a look of the first part of the boat. This is what it looks from the top. This is what it looks with Batman riding it. Next, it’s The Penguin’s duck boat, it’s kind of annoying for The Penguin to have a duck vehicle instead of a penguin vehicle. Here’s the front view, nothing special. Here are the sides of the boat. It really looks like a duck at this angle. This also get flick fires. Here is the back with the rotor of the boat. Nothing special. Here’s what it looks like with The Penguin in it. Then, it’s the robot penguins. Here is a front view of them. They’ve got dynamite of their hands, orange feet and a yellow beak. Here’s the sides of them, you can see they only has one wing each, the another hand is just a simple clip. Here is the back of them. The 1x1 cheese slope pieces are the tails of them, I suppose. Lastly, it’s a block of ice. Noting too special except the translucent light blue diamond. The Complete Set Here’s the complete set. I think it fits together nicely. You get cool vehicles for Batman and The Penguin and two exclusive figures. I think it worth the money as a thirteen-dollar set. Ratings Design: 5/5 - I love the duck boat. It's so cute. It looks like a duck. It's my favorite penguin vehicle in this line so far (because we’ve only got one penguin vehicle!). Build: 5/5 - The build is quite satisfying. Plus, there’s no stickers to put on! Minifigs: 5/5 - The minifigs are pretty good. Scuba Batman looks great. The Penguin looks pretty good in his coat style suit. Playability: 3.5/5 – There’s actually not much play features in this set, except for the flick missiles. I’d like to see the block of ice exploding like in the Artic Batman set last year. Price: 4/5 - 136 pieces is a decent amount for a $13 set, especially a licensed one. Overall: 4.5/5 - This set is a good value. It gives you one of Batman's in one of his special suits, a new Penguin. It's a good buy for Batman fans of all ages. Edited January 7, 2014 by Brick King71 Quote
Amset-Rah Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Great review! I've been waiting for this set since the preliminary pics came out and it didn't disappoint. I love Penguin's new print. Perfect for any Batman Returns/Arkham City MOCs out there, and Batman's scuba suit is interesting, and I could see some possibilities with that alternate face, maybe as a gas mask. I might personally use it for a purist Firefly. The builds are a mixed bag. Batman's vehicle looks a little weird, but I like the parts, but Penguin's duck boat is great and again, a nod to Batman Returns. The ice scenery is a bonus. I may have to pick this baby up along with the Manbat and Riddler sets. I'm still on the fence with the Joker set, but I digress. This is perhaps the best $12 set in the superheroes range since the Catwoman set which I missed out on. Quote
TheLegoDr Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 I was already getting this set, but you have now made me want multiples of the figures (at least Batman's new head and Penguin's torso). The set itself looks neat, but I'll probably put the pieces in my parts bin. The figures are a great draw and it's great to get another version of Batman. If they are going to have so many of him, might as well make a few different versions. Thanks for the review. Quote
Drock Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Thanks for the great review, Brick KIng! The Batman figure and the duck are pretty cool. The rest of the set...meh. I will be picking this up though as soon as it's available here in the US. Quote
strangely Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 The Batman head is interesting, it's in the same style as Flash's head. I've always disliked how his neck on the regular minifigure isn't covered by the mask, so this eliminates that problem for me. It makes me wonder if they'll use a similar printing technique for the Superman vs. Batman sets in 2015. Rumor is that the cowl will be pretty different from the previous movies so that means there's a good chance we'll see a redesigned cowl for the Lego sets. If that does happen I suspect we'll see a cowl designed in the same style as the Flash helmet, which would mean this black head is a good indication of what his head would look like for that type of cowl. Or they might just keep on using this "bucket" helmet for Batman (I don't particularly the current cowl), I don't like how the eyes on the cowl don't match up to his actual eyes (Lego please fix that). Either way I wouldn't mind the black head becoming the standard, it just makes more sense to me. I definitely love Penguin's design in this set. I have the Arkham one, but I actually like this one better. It makes more sense to me. Penguin often seems to be featured in icy locations or weather, so this sort of fits with that motif better than his tuxedo. I do feel like the duck could have been better designed. It looks good from the side, but not really from any other angle. Perhaps a large version of it would have looked better. And while I like the idea of the duck very much I can't help but think I would have rather had the submarine instead. Either way it's well worth the price. Quote
Digivolution Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Thanks for the review. I like the mini figs. I was planning on getting this set. But now may buy multiples for the yellow parts used in the duck and for extra penguin drones. It's also VERY nice that the bat symbol is actually printed instead of being a sticker. Cheers, D. Quote
Blakstone Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Thanks for the great review. This is my only must buy for the DC wave. After seeing this review, I might buy two. I was impressed with the Penguin printing and how reusable it would be. The lack of stickers is also great. I generally wait to buy Superheros when it comes out on clearance. Since I don't MOC vehicles the bricks are not very useful to me. Quote
Brickadiergerard Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 As others have already said, thanks for this great review. It would've been easy to go short on the set because of its size, but you packed in the detail which is really appreciated! I think this is a really good set - in fact, I think it's the only one of the new wave that has no disappointing features. Great figures, good little vehicles, no stickers, nice little play features, and a great price. Well done TLG! No wonder this is the set my kids most want to get from the new range. I am a big fan of the new-look Penguin torso, and giving him grey legs is a much better look than the purple from series 1 or the violet ones from Arkham. He's meant to be a snobbish, old-fashioned, snappy dresser, and if a gentleman is wearing a tailed morning suit then he only ever wears grey trousers. Scuba Bats is great too - I love the printing, especially the head and I agree with others that the printing of the face with the black cowl surround may be the shape of things to come. That surround certainly looks to be an improvement in the existing one with the line of it softening the edges that exist in the current set-up. I just hope that the fleshie print on it doesn't look too thin. Quote
