sin Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 (edited) Hey all, So it's been about a year since I built my Grand Emporium... Similar to a lot of others I felt the 2nd and 3rd floors were rather spartan and decided that I would have to make some additions of my own. Low and behold, a whole year goes by and I had done nothing. Having just finished sorting out my spare parts I thought it would be a good time to start fiddling around with this. I did some web searching to see what other people had done (so much complaining about the lack of interior that I figured there must be a wealth of stuff online) and found surprisingly little so I decided to start a thread. I basically made a bunch of department store style display shelves. They are very simple but not bad for a first go with my limited supply of parts and colors. I also added a few bits that I threw together very quickly so they wouldn't look so plain. Low glass display case: Glass display case with shelving: Tiered shelf: Basic 2 level shelves: Small tables: A couple of other ideas I had: A display rack that merchandise can hang from. I'll have to experiment a little to find something suitable that will work. A coffee bar. I have seen several online that have given me ideas, just a matter of whether I have the parts to pull it off. If anyone has done this or has any input I would love to hear about it! lightningtiger Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 I'm sort of a guru of shop fittings having built I forget the number but over 50 different design of stores/shops.....check them out. Besides your display pieces fit the GE perfectly, though can you post bigger images.....you are allowed 800x600.......Brick On 'sin' ! Quote
sin Posted January 9, 2014 Author Posted January 9, 2014 Thanks lightningtiger, images fixed I was checking out your town the other day, you have some very cool interiors in those shops! Quote

That may be the case, probably have to wait until you have 10 posts or so check this link to see his current work: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=90523#entry1785971 Quote
sin Posted January 10, 2014 Author Posted January 10, 2014 (edited) Alright, I spent quite a bit of time messing around with ways of doing some kind of hanging merchandise rack with zero success this evening so I moved on to the coffee bar. Customer view: Rear counter and espresso machine: Employee view: I'm going to try out a few ways for fitting the shelving, tables and coffee bar into the GE next. I'm thinking the coffee bar and 'adult' merchandise will go on the 2nd floor and toys plus something else (haven't figured out yet) on the third floor. Edited January 10, 2014 by sin Quote
sin Posted January 10, 2014 Author Posted January 10, 2014 Well I am done for now. I moved the cash register on the coffee bar to the opposite side, just rebuilt it mirrored so it would fit against the wall. I placed all of the items that I built plus some chairs, a tiny table, a couple plants and 2 boxes full of toys as well. The space is just about maxed out so I don't think I will be adding the hanging rack that I had envisioned. I do want to get some 2 x 2 dark tan plates with the centered stud so I can fix the merchandise to the shelf. It's very delicate with almost everything just sitting on plates and it took a few tries to replace the floors into my layout without knocking everything off them. I took before and after pictures for effect Original 2nd floor: New 2nd floor: Original 3rd floor: New 3rd floor: I am very happy with the results, it feels a lot more 'grand' than it did before! cja Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Very nice! I got the petshop this christmas and I'm planning to add some interior to it. Quote
ritzcrackerman Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Excellent and clever parts usage. I especially like the use of the window frames with gold latice - such a simple use, and it looks like gilded bottles or merchandise in a high-end department store. Fantastic. I will let you know right now, I will be borrowing every single one of your ideas you present here. :) Hopefully you consider that a form of flattery and not thievery. Cheers! one other suggestion - if you have any of the 1x2 tile pieces from the CMF lines with cell phones (I think the socialite from Series 10 with the chihuaha; some of the pink Friends phones; the Good Cop/Bad Cop from the Lego Movies series) - those would also make good displayable merchandise (and maybe even preferable to the generic dashboard/gauge tiles you have right now). No problem, use whatever you like! Great suggestion on the cellphone tiles, I hadn't thought of those at all. Quote

Pretty sure that a self-proclaimed guru is an oxymoron... Very interesting thread - I got the GE for Xmas and am planning what to do with the interior and there's some nice neat ideas here. I particularly like the coffee bar. Great stuff! Cheers Rog Quote
LAKAbricks Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 (edited) Inspirational! I am also looking for ideas how to make interior for department stores. Partly for GE which I also think has a way too Spartan interior, and partly for my MOC department store. I, too, agree that Lightning Tiger's many shops are a good place to get inspiration. EDIT: I forgot to write, I also like the coffee shop. Really a good idea. Edited January 10, 2014 by laka Quote
xinbei Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Amazing work! I like these internal design details very much! Quote
TheBear Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Nice job squeezing a coffee bar and all that merchandise into the available space. If I were doing this I would increase the floor space a bit by reducing the size of the balcony around the escalator. Quote
TheLazyChicken Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 (edited) That is very good progress! I love the new version of yours! Too bad I just broke my Grand Emporium last week. Edited January 11, 2014 by TheLazyChicken Quote
Wodanis Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Really like the interior deco Sin. Maybe I will have to try and create more of an interior for my GE. Great work! The coffee bar is nice and effective. Quote
timmyc1983 Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 Great ideas here and very well squeezed into the GE. You certainly don't have much room to work with there but you have done very on both floors!! Good work and happy building Quote
BricksMcgee Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Nice! I've altered mine too, to include a garden and homeware section on the 1st floor (US 2nd floor) with a range of mowers from the 5891 Creator Apple Tree House from alongside other bits. I've also made the most of recent Christmas polybags and the CMF Elf figure from series 11 to create a bit of a Santa's grotto for the top floor Quote
sin Posted January 13, 2014 Author Posted January 13, 2014 Thanks for the feedback everybody! I will probably replace some of the nondescript items in the toy section with advent calendar toys from the last couple of years - fire truck, excavator, fire boat and steam train I still have bouncing around somewhere. I'm not sure about the location for the glass case on the 3rd floor either, I may end up keeping the case but moving the things on top to the floor below. I was also taking another look at the ground floor. I had not planned on changing it initially but I will probably change my mind this week, I'll come back and post if I do anything Quote
Only Sinner Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 This looks so much better. All the detail you've packed into such a puny space. That coffee bar is just the best. I wonder why the designers left so much room for the escalator, yet gave such spartan detail to the little remaining floor space. At any rate, this is certainly one of the better mods I've seen with this. Quote
