Emma Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 (edited) Book II Challenge I Category A Dragon’s Blood The human Nimueh and her companion the Dark Horse have been traversing Nocturnus with warnings of the oncoming war. The Black Spire has spewed forth legions across the Darklands, destroying everything in their path. Very few of the smaller villages have any chance against the vial hordes. Nimueh: “They will be here before nightfall. You must leave now and make for one of the more defensible cities. Remain here and you will only meet death.” Village Elder: “We will not flee like cowards! We would rather stay and die then run!” “Wait…” a feeble voice whispered from the shadows. An old woman stepped forward and with a shaking hand held out a small vial. Nimueh took it carefully from her out stretched hand. “What is it?” With a gnarled finger, the old woman gestured towards Dark Horse, “The changeling can save us… with help from this, the blood of a dragon.” “How…?” Nimueh didn’t have time to wonder how the old woman new of Dark’s powers, the Spire horde was nearly upon them. The dragon’s blood would give Dark the extra power he would need to shift into something as great and powerful as a dragon. And with a dragon, they would decimate the Spire’s troop. Taking out her dagger, Nimueh approached Dark. He lowered his head in assent and allowed Nimueh to run the dagger along his shoulder, a small stream of blood flowed freely. She opened the vial and poured a single drop of the contents into Dark’s open wound. Drawing power from dragon’s blood, Dark’s form twisted and convulsed and stretched, black wings stretched above the villagers, and hot flames burst from his mouth. The old woman’s eyes gleamed “Go, crush our enemies and save our village.” Dark flew off to meet the horde. Nimueh and the villages followed to pick off the stragglers, and pile the burning bodies. C&C always welcome. Larger pictures on flickr. Edited January 16, 2014 by kabel Quote
Torgar Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Great story, and really nice shaping of the dragon! Quote
Gideon Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Very well built dragon and great job with the photography! So much details on such a small base, good job Quote
Lord Vladivus Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Damn. Yet again, you've blown it out of the park! Great job! Quote
ZCerberus Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 We have a new Cara, her name is Emma. Quote
Emma Posted January 16, 2014 Author Posted January 16, 2014 Thanks so much everyone! I had early versions of his head and wings done for a while but figuring out something for his body and trying to get the wings to stay up took forever (with several crashes occurring) - and once that was done it turned out that the wings were way outside of the 16x16, so they had to be restructured, lol. jodawill Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 I think this is the best brick-built dragon I've ever seen. I'd like to see it with more colors though because solid black doesn't provide a lot of clarity in photos. Quote
Simon_S Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Great dragon Emma! Oh and the stroy is also cool Quote
narbilu Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 one of the best brick build dragons ever! Quote
soccerkid6 Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Amazing dragon, I love the eye design you used I'm glad you're on the Nocturnus Team Quote
de Gothia Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 I so envy you with the imagination and the ability to build mocs like these! The dragon looks so alive! Just bravo!! Quote
kabel Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 A truely awesome dragon, what a great entry in the contest! Quote
Niku Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 My goodness this is awesome!! But coming from you is like a standard, you always make fantastic mocs, keep them coming. I love the motion sense of the scene. Quote
Emma Posted January 20, 2014 Author Posted January 20, 2014 I really appreciate the kind feedback everyone - thank you . GoH has been a huge inspiration for me - I never knew just how 'flexible' Lego could be until browsing through here, and then it was like my eyes were opened <-- (that's my in awe face). I've started approaching my Lego as clay to be molded, rather than bricks to be stacked. I'd like to see it with more colors though because solid black doesn't provide a lot of clarity in photos. Very true - I think with a better photography setup (a couple of reflector cards and better light sources - outside hasn't really been an option due to the weather ), I might be able to pick up on more of the details, despite being all black. (I will probably keep him together for a little while, so I may have a go at taking some better images.) One issue that I ran into was there ended up being a lot of noise in the background. I did some editing to try and remove it, but I noticed one obvious spot in the last image, right between the wings. Anyone have ideas about that, perhaps just a consequence of low light/long exposure? Eeps I'm getting long winded...but...One last thing, I'm not sure how well it translated into the photos, but the dragon has a light brick in his belly, that lights up the flame coming out of his mouth by utilizing this piece (an unexpected find in a box of loose Lego bought off my local classifieds - I never knew Lego had fiber optic cables). mpoh98 Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Wow, now this one amazing dragon! The idea is fantastic, would never have thought of that! Beautiful work man! Quote
Cara Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 I go giddy over dragons and this guy is a superb one. Well deserved win, he's really, really gorgeous. Quote
Gabe Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 Congrats on the win Emma, well deserved with this beauty! I love the action pose of this dragon and the light brick works a treat - fiber optic cable is a great trick, i'll have to remember that. The chaos of the ground action is amazing too... fabulous work! Quote
Emma Posted March 18, 2014 Author Posted March 18, 2014 Thanks for the comments! I'm glad this guy was able to take down some Spire grunts, despite those bad guys prevailing overall, lol. Another thing with the fiber optic cable is it works great as part of the structural support, here it's a key part in keeping the head attached to the neck and the neck attached to the body. @Cara: I love your stuff! I've often admired how wonderfully organic your builds are, especially the fantasy creatures. @Gabe: fortunately, going with all black meant I only had to worry about figuring out the structure/shape... your Emerald dragon has both a wonderful shape and a great colour scheme, now that's impressive!
