jamesster Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 http://www.simplyscripts.com/2014/03/15/the-lego-movie-script/ http://www.screenplaydb.com/film/scripts/lego.pdf Whoa. Is this seriously legit? It certainly fits the early descriptions we heard of the movie, with Emmet being a descendant of these ancient Master Builder people (http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/03/14/lord-miller-talk-lego-movie), and the title being "LEGO: The Piece of Resistance" (http://www.slashfilm.com/phil-lord-chris-miller-offer-title-plot-details-warner-bros-lego-movie/). There's also this: http://writetoreel.com/forum/showthread.php?4895-REQUEST-quot-The-Lego-Movie-quot-(2014)-script&p=18486&viewfull=1#post18486 I've signed up for the forum but my account isn't approved yet so I can't download the file, but it's the same size as the one previously linked to. So unless it's something different that just happens to be the same size, that would date this draft to September 27, 2010 (the movie started development in 2008). Here's an analysis of it: http://www.filmdivider.com/the-lego-movie-we-didnt-see-with-indiana-jones-harry-potter-and-a-love-of-kubrick/ Quote
just2good Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 I only have got around to reading the Film Divider analysis, but that sure is interesting... I laughed at "NeckBeard". Quote
jamesster Posted March 27, 2014 Author Posted March 27, 2014 Found a review of the screenplay, confirming it's from 2010: http://scriptshadow.net/screenplay-review-the-lego-movie/ Also just finished reading the screenplay for myself. Wow, that was really quite something. Different enough from the final movie that I actually found myself envisioning things completely different from what the final movie ended up looking like, it was really surreal. Quote
Toby Adams Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 That. Is. Amazing. Keshen8 and his film 'The Magic Portal' brings back memories! Quote
Floundie Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 That. Is. Amazing. Keshen8 and his film 'The Magic Portal' brings back memories! FYI The Magic Portal was made by Lindsay Fleay, not Keshen8. Script sounds cool, I'll take time later to read it. Quote
jamesster Posted March 27, 2014 Author Posted March 27, 2014 (edited) Downloaded the script on Write To Reel, and it is indeed the same PDF as the one on Screenplay DB. Edit: A friend of mine (ProfessorBrickkeeper, dunno if he's on Eurobricks or not) just found some concept art of the movie that matches the script: http://eca-la.com/blog/7/2/2014/some-of-my-art-from-the-lego-movie Specifically, this concept art of the Octan/Empura tower situated in a volcano: Edited March 28, 2014 by jamesster Quote
RedSpaceman1978 Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 Now I can see why they had to remind the directors it was a family movie. It would have been great if they had kept Benny's personality, like Moppy. I would have enjoyed that. And I liked the fact that Larry had a larger role in the film as well, and I would like to make a few scenes of this in stopmotion, when I'm less busy. Quote

BrickG Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 (edited) The best stories seem to ALWAYS go through draft after draft after draft. Stubbornness just makes stories bad. Like with the original trilogy of Star Wars. That went through years of changes and was night and day in quality (Lucas had people telling him the original drafts were horrible). Then he goes on and has 100% control over the prequels and doesn't take any constructive criticism unless it's from yes-men who only talk about how brilliant he is (seriously, look at the old videos talking to the people involved in making the prequels) which IMO is why the prequels sucked. People are at their best when they're open to change. It doesn't always work but The Lego Movie is another example of the story just getting that much better by the final draft. I'm not saying this draft is terribad or anything. :P Edited May 2, 2014 by BrickG Quote
