mccoyed Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 (edited) Here is my first MOC for Historica, an entry in the Age of Mitgardia community builds. I noticed that none of the other MOCs heavily featured the great big ol' axe so traditionally depicted as the Norse weapon of choice, and this inspired the build. Credit to HammerBro33 for the elaborate fig stand idea, though I put my own spin on it. NOTE: I'm still new so I don't know if/when I should claim UoP credits. If anyone can help me identify if this build qualifies for any, that would be awesome. Also, I'm not sure how to post pics to the body of my message. I used "Attach Image" in the Mitgardia main thread, but now it tells me my pics are too big (they are 800x600 or less). Help with that would be grand as well! UoP credits claimed: Landscape: Trees Anthropology: Life in Mitgardia Minifig Posing. Angle 1: Angle 2: Angle 3: Close-up: No figs: Cast of characters: Jarl Asbjorn of Arnarhvall (located in wooded peninsula west of Tradewind Bay). His Housecarl, Tyrn Arvidson (Asbjorn's most trusted warrior). A Thrasher-in-training, Alva Tyrnsdottir (who is trying to earn her father's approval and her own arm-ring). Lord Vladivus Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 You need to deep link them- http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=18451 Nice moc though! I like the axe embedded in the wood! Quote
de Gothia Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 Great first scene! You mitgardians are really pumping out yor mocs these days! Quote
Scaevola Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 You could also just select the share option in your flickr (next to each photo) and click on the tack. Then copy and paste the URL into the picture box on the post. Nice scene by the way Quote
Garmadon Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 (edited) You could also just select the share option in your flickr (next to each photo) and click on the tack. Then copy and paste the URL into the picture box on the post. Nice scene by the way The fastest way is clicking on Get the HTML Code, then you can change the size (underneath the code it says how big it is) to Medium 640 (which is pretty much the normal size), copy the code and post it here like this: (You can get rid of the needless link and name by deleting the last line of the code) Nice little build, BTW, I really like that tree Edited April 22, 2014 by Garmadon Quote
HammerBro Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 Good little scene. I like the mix of colors in the tree and all the action. For posting pictures, the way I do it is get to the image page on flickr (the url you have linked above), click the 'share this photo' button, then highlight the HTML button, scroll over until you see the url starting with https://farm6.static.....jpg Copy that link the paste it in the image dialogue box on the forum here. Seems someone beat me to it as I was writing this... Quote
mccoyed Posted April 22, 2014 Author Posted April 22, 2014 (edited) Thanks for all the kudos and advice. Really, I owe everybody on GoH for any MOC I make because I've learned it all by watching you guys here or on Flickr. EDIT: Had lots of problems with pics but figured it out, awww yeah :D. Wat Tambor Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 Nice build the ground textures work well with the snowy leafs. Your minifigs are also nice, especially the self-made cloacks. Quote
-Carson Haupt- Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 Nice! The figs look good, and I like the armband idea. Quote
mccoyed Posted April 22, 2014 Author Posted April 22, 2014 (edited) Thanks guys. The homemade cloaks are gray felt that I think nicely simulates furs. I've also made little bundles tied with string for tradeable furs. You'll see that in a different MOC. The arm-rings are a Norse tradition during the viking era. Other pre-Christian tribes in North and West Europe also had similar ornamental, symbolic jewelry such as the torc. My spin on it is to include women in what was normally a coming-of-age tradition for , if I recall correctly, only young men, where earning an arm-ring symbolized their full membership in their community and bestowed on them mens' rights such as to raid, own land, get married, etc. Edited April 22, 2014 by mccoyed Quote
MKJoshA Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 I like this build. It's a great first entry for AoM. I would recommend making the bottom of your base flush with the ground. Right now it looks like a Jenga game with that extra plate on the bottom and the lips on the edges. Having plates all the way around the bottom edge will make it look better. Quote
mccoyed Posted April 22, 2014 Author Posted April 22, 2014 Thanks MKJoshA. I'll be posting my Archery Phase I soon and I'll make sure to do that. I think you're right that it'll look much better. The figplinths sorta demonstrate that. Quote
Yooha Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 Are Tyrn and Alva from Iceland? (I just learned the custom of icelandic names the other day) Quote
mccoyed Posted April 24, 2014 Author Posted April 24, 2014 Tyrn is a derivation of the Norse god Tyr (the one-handed warrior god). Alva is a relatively common girl's name in Norse-descended culture. Interestingly, Iceland maintains a heckuva lot of traditional names and so you'd see "viking" style place and people names there probably more often than in modern Scandinavia. So while I didn't borrow the names directly from Iceland, I get them from the same source. There are a few Scandinavians in Historica I think so they would probably have a better grasp of that and any other differences. Quote
soccerkid6 Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Very good start to the Barracks Phases. The landscape is excellent and your fig posing looks very good The pedestal you used to show off each fig is a neat touch Quote
Gunman Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 I really like minifig posing... Great job.. And nice start at GoH! Quote
TheUtilityBelt Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 I like the landscaping and the capes, did you make them? Very good fig posing, also. Quote
mccoyed Posted April 28, 2014 Author Posted April 28, 2014 Wow. Getting positive feedback from you guys? That's very special to me as I've been admiring all your builds on Historica for a long time. And yeah, I made those capes. I have this whole thing with felt (I've got so many colors) where I plan to do some Mitgardian fur trappers and textile sellers from Kaliphlin and stuff like that. Very excited to get started on some of those builds in a month or two. Quote
Kai NRG Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 +1 credit for trees and also life in Migardia... because of course life in Mitgardia is nothing more than barracks training... (Just kidding; they play with friends sets once in a while too. ) Quote
Gabe Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 You have a really good eye for making custom figs mccoyed, these, although less inventive than others i've seen on your Flickr page, look really cool with their custom capes and shiny armbands. The small training vig you've shown them in is quite impressive for the small footprint - good ground texture, nice height on the tree and a realistic colour palette provide a solid setting for some quite dramatic minifig action. Nice work! UoP +1 for one tree type (You will need two more), Life in Mitgardia and minifig posing. ps. I have to say though, those sideways cones on the base make me think of tabletop soccer! That would be kinda cool, if you could twist the cones and make them fight... Quote
mccoyed Posted May 4, 2014 Author Posted May 4, 2014 Thanks Kai and Gabe. I appreciate the UoP credits and comments. I still have a bit of a limit on green and yellow so I thought the cones might work nicely. In retrospect, I am going to work on a new "presentation base" design once I have a bricklink order in. I have a tried some variations of some used by others in GoH but none have stuck so far. Quote
