Kai NRG Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 Usually these little ships travel in fleets of three or more, but this one got separated running a heavy sea up in Mitgardia. Of course, technically Kaliphlin ships can't be damaged by ordinary gales, but this seems like it might not be an ordinary one... perhaps the Drow have got it up to keep the cotton this ship was carrying from reaching Avalonia? Or maybe not. I just wanted some big waves! The skipper watches out ahead to make sure they're not near land. This is my entry for the Warship category of the GNAR... yes, the ship is more of a boat, but a bigger one wouldn't have fit in that nice border! Also, the boat splits apart (after removing the rubber band only a couple technic pins keep it together) in the middle of the mast (which itself is a rather interesting design, I thought). A picture of that wouldn't have been very much to Kaliphlin credit however. I'd also like to claim PU DoH credit for waves (hydrology), flowing water (hydrology), and minifigure posing (general building). Comments are welcome! Quote
TheUtilityBelt Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 I love the big wave spilling over the edge! But if it's in Mitgardia, shirtless? Quote
Gideon Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 (edited) Very nice boat Your water technique is quite excellent, and the photography is top notch which I'm always happy to see! You have made great progress in that aspect I will gladly +1 your UoP credit claims for waves and minifig posing. However, I think the flowing water category should depict a stream/river or something like that. Edited May 14, 2014 by Gideon Quote
gedren_y Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 I'm with Gideon, UoP DoH +1 for Waves and Minifig Posing. The other is for rivers, waterfalls, springs and irrigation. Quote
Thomas of Tortuga Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 Very nice! I like the detail at the base of the mast, and the subtle angles in the yardarms are perfect. The flags flapping wildly are a very nice detail, too. I think the mast might look better if it was another plate thicker, though, so as not to be a plank. Also, if you have the pieces, I think it might look better to have more of a splash at the end of the giant wave, rather than leaving it hanging in midair. As it is, it seems a bit too smooth to be realistic. At the prow, what are the two poles the captain's holding onto supposed to be? Finally, the sailor bailing with a pot is a really nice detail Quote
MassEditor Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 Nice border and wave design. Cool little ship too! Quote
HammerBro Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 Great story and I love the triangular border! Quote
Emma Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 The shape of the border is really cool and the fig posing is excellent - I especially like the guy bailing water. I wonder if a bit of blue mixed in with the clear pieces might enhance the wateriness appearance a bit... Quote
Kai NRG Posted May 15, 2014 Author Posted May 15, 2014 Thanks everyone! I love the big wave spilling over the edge! But if it's in Mitgardia, shirtless? We're tough. Finally, the sailor bailing with a pot is a really nice detail Thanks! Glad you like the subtle angles... they were rather unintentional but did turn out nicely! Just because of the way it's constructed making the mast thicker would have been very difficult to get to look right. Not exactly sure what you mean by more of a splash... there is one 1x1 round at the end ! The two poles are supposed to be just that... two poles for the captain to hang on to! The shape of the border is really cool and the fig posing is excellent - I especially like the guy bailing water. I wonder if a bit of blue mixed in with the clear pieces might enhance the wateriness appearance a bit... Thanks! There is purple underneath, but it hardly shows. A bit of blue might have helped though I'm not a huge fan of mixing the two (partly because of the sorting that implies! ). Quote
Thomas of Tortuga Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 ... Not exactly sure what you mean by more of a splash... there is one 1x1 round at the end ! ... I was thinking maybe the wave reaching to the surface around the triangle, as though it was splashing out onto the floor. The smooth curve just seems to clash with the cheese slope water without any texturing on the end. Oh, and +1 for the UP credits of waves and minifig posing; I have to agree that the flowing water category would be better as a stream, though. Quote
Wat Tambor Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 Oh this is certainly a very nice build! I really like the presentation and how you did the waves and the little ice berg. Quote
emilstorm Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 Cute little moc:) I like the boat, the triangle frame and the wave itself, good work:) Quote
de Gothia Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 Lovely border and I like the wave coming out of the moc! Great work! Quote

Scaevola Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 (edited) Nice work, I like the curved border and the large waves. I'll gladly grant you +1 UoP DoH for all your claims. I'm not very fond of the mast however, but really nice work with everything else. Edited May 15, 2014 by Scaevola Quote

I'm not surprised you're not keen on the mast, I was trying out something pretty new and wasn't sure how it would work! Quote
Hammerhand Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 Interesting ship design, and nice job with the water. The big wave over the edge with the little drop of water on the ground made me laugh, cool idea. Quote
soccerkid6 Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 Really cool wave and border designs The boat itself is good too, and the iceberg is a nice touch Quote
Gabe Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 One of the things i really enjoy about your builds is how often you reach for something different, and this build is no exception! The brick-bending triangle base is certainly unique, and i liked the subtle angles of the slopes on the bow and stern. The wave action is very dynamic, although when i looked initially i was convinced that the water was flowing in the opposite direction - it does look a little like a stream of water being poured into a container? (And the ship with it! ) Generally that scumbled surface (the scattered cheese) comes from the disturbance of the water surface where waves roil and break, wheras the back of waves that high are smooth as all the forces are moving in the same direction. Still, it is an interesting technique and adds a lot of drama to your scene, as does the minifig posing of the bailing sailors. You don't need any more credits, but i would still give you them for waves and minifig posing anyway.... nice work! Quote

Yes, I will definitely give you the discrepancy between water types, that bothered me a bit but there really wasn't much of a better way to do it (given the shape of the base especially - though maybe I could have had the wave coming in from the outside?). Glad you liked the brick bending base! I've always wanted to use that technique but just recently discovered that I had enough 2x1s to do something with it! Thanks! Quote
