Nice updates! I'm actually working on a blog post for Scalawag Sloop in support of BrickLink Designer Program Series 7. So I'll incorporate the updated version of the ship into that blog post as well.

You're on to something It was the early 90s when hollow stud heads were introduced. So depending upon what year the particular sets you acquired were manufactured, it may influence whether the heads have hollow studs or not. Furthermore, depending on how you acquired these sets, they may not have included their original minifigures, particularly if they were secondhand. For example: The blue coat Soldiers were in production until 1993, by which time they would have had hollow stud heads. So for whatever reason, the seller may have substituted some of the minfigs, either due to losing the originals, or acquiring the set without them, and then sourcing comparable minfigs elsewhere.

Oh blimey! This topic takes me way back - thank ye for weighing in! Annoying how in the time since PhotoBucket has monetized and now watermarks images on free accounts. Searching me archive, it appears I still possess the original image:

That line has stuck in my head since 1992... but never did I interpret it as an official confirmation that the Soldiers and Imperial Guards belong to the same faction. However, in past forum discussions, I've argued that they are indeed the same faction; blue coats being the naval branch, while red coats are the military branch.

And where be this rumour mill located? It hasn't reached Reddit yet. But Reddit does mention One Piece.
