mahjqa replied to JunkstyleGio's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThe 4th gear can be added in a diff; it'll stay there because the other gears won't allow it to fall out. It has no function, though.- Nathanael Kuiper's Jeep Hurricane
mahjqa replied to JunkstyleGio's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingEr. It shows how the wheels move in the right direction. It doesn't really show it turning under it's own power, standing on the ground.- Sebulba's Podracer
It sat on my Flickr for some time (pictures here), and for a while I thought I should make a nice movie for it. It's been a month or so, and I don't think I feel like doing that movie anymore. So here's the short version:- Quick poll about instructions
mahjqa replied to mahjqa's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingErik Leppen; I understand your concerns. That's what I do. For almost every creation on this page there are multiple pictures of the functionality, internals and techniques. Every time I use a strange part it's annotated with a link to bricklink. That is not going away. And for some people, those pictures are enough. To you, me and most hardcore AFOLs it's second nature to figure these constructions out. However, most people either don't have the time or the insight to build like that. And in the end it's simple: I'm sacrificing a big chunk of time I'd rather spend doing other things. I'm hoping for some kind of compensation. That is all.- Quick poll about instructions
Just so we're on the same page, I'm talking about this one: I've considered making instructions for it. However, it would be a very time-intensive project. We're talking about 400 pages of instructions, and at least a full month of work. Since I already know how to build one, I don't need instructions and I'd rather use my time for other things. However, some of you might want them. The instructions would not be like Lego's instructions. They'd look like this, perhaps a bit more polished. They'd be delivered as a zip file with JPGs, or a gigantic PDF. If you want it printed, you'll have to do so yourself. There is of course the problem of piracy. Undoubtedly, some jackass will eventually try to sell this on ebay or wherever. As a countermeasure, I will release these instructions for free eventually. I'm thinking about a timeframe of 6-12 months. 'So why pay for it, then?' Well, because you'll have a head start. And if nobody does, this thing will not get made. Don't like these prospects? Then please don't give me your money. However, if you're capable of getting $350 worth of parts to build this thing, I'm sure you can spare some bucks for little ol' me.- Review: 8457 Technic Power Puller

mahjqa replied to Tobbe Arnesson's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingNice adaptation! Great idea to add the gearbox, and the finish flag works out very well. You asked about the stickers; the ones I used were printed by a company that does stickering for cars and store windowing and such. You might want to ask around for companies like those. Would you mind if I added your pictures to my flickr, completely credited of course?- Allround Car Competition - Plastic Power

I wish you best of luck, but I wouldn't be a customer. I feel pretty confident I could reverse-engineer most MOCs. And besides, I'd rather be building my own stuff than rebuilding somebody else's work. Of course, there should be plenty of people who would be interested, because you build some damn nice stuff.- Black Swan
mahjqa replied to LegoistT's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingNope. I'm no fan of 'sneak previews'. If it's done, show it already. If it isn't, get back to work. Don't waste time with what could have been and what might have been. Of course, your mileage may vary and all that.- Wacky Race

mahjqa replied to mahjqa's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingWHOO! That looks awesome! Thanks! Your alternative for the hero factory shields works nicely. Yeah, I substituted the grenade launchers (or whatever they were supposed to be, in-game they're miniguns, I think) for something a little more sturdy. For those who want to install the originals, here's a good view of them:- Alrighty now, now this is just getting silly now!
mahjqa replied to Meatman's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThe power puller was released in the year 2000. That's eleven years ago. They don't keep parts in storage that long.- Alrighty now, now this is just getting silly now!
mahjqa replied to Meatman's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingYou can blame Barman, the guy who made . I think that one's also the reason are in short supply. Every AFOL's set of released instructions can have a huge impact on available parts, especially if those are rare already.- TLG's Written Stance About "Weapons in LEGO"
mahjqa replied to DLuders's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingIf I may quote myself: Which is why I try to keep my models away from real-life military aesthetics; is more a caricature than a real tank, and the has bright orange striping that wouldn't work all that well in a camouflage paintjob.- Metal Grudge
mahjqa replied to mahjqa's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThe two receiver deal -does- give a slight advantage in acceleration and maneuvering. However, it's not enough to justify the purchase of another receiver for people who may be new to Power Functions. Also, after a while there were some problems; the internal safety of the receiver seemed to kick in at random intervals. Never figured out how to get rid of that. Since I don't want to deal with people complaining that the model doesn't work, I changed it back to a single receiver which may lower performance a bit, but is way more reliable. Of course, if you want to go completely nuts, there's room for two battery packs in the vehicle.- Metal Grudge
mahjqa replied to mahjqa's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThe tiny wheels on them allow the wheel to slide sideways. When tank-steered vehicles turn, they have to overcome the sideways fricton on their tracks or wheels. Because the tiny wheels take away much of that friction, it can do powerslides and those 360-degree turns, while still going in the same direction. Oh, and they also do this: - Nathanael Kuiper's Jeep Hurricane
